Double Entendre?

  1. OMG, are those iron framed casements in your windows? And no double glazing? No wonder you’re up at 5am freezing your toesies off. Worst windows ever made; they’re hard pressed to even keep the rain out, much less any cold.

  2. Gosh, I hate to defend government bureaucrats.  But how was the poor bastard Transportation Secretary supposed to know you’d get hammered in late November?

  3. Drew, my initial reading of the headline was in line with yours.

I found this on the InterThingy: True Grit

the definition of “grit” from our old friend Webster is “firmness of mind or spirit; unyielding courage in the face of hardship or danger.” It also has a definition that refers to gravel, but that’s not the type of grit we’re looking for.

So, aside from John Wayne’s character in the movie, who had “True Grit,” and how can we get it?

The first person who comes to my mind was Winston Churchill.

Kind of sad that the nation that produced Winston Churchill has succumbed to whatever disease it is (PC?) that is reflected in this blog. Not to knock the UK - the US isn’t far behind.

  4. Yep, we are almost at ‘Ramming Speed’ CenTex. Just need a bit more of them subsidised corn squeezins in the tank and were off.

  5. CenTexTim, don’t forget the Iron Lady. She had as big a dose of it as Rooster Cogburn ever had. If that drive, that will, that basic faith in self and country that once upon a time built an Empire still lives in that soggy island, it doesn’t seem to get any voice from any of their public figures. And then we hear some rare story of bloody minded invincibility from the military Brits over there in sandland ... so it does exist, and that proof cheers our hearts, but the next day it’s the same old socialist stupid out of their gov and their press and even their top brass at MOD. All of them afraid to even think of bayonets, much less fix them and form the battle square. [ that’s a figurative one, meaning a formidable and fearless approach to life, problems, etc. Battle squares don’t even work in battle anymore, not since the advent of Paul Mauser’s and Hiram Maxim’s nasty little devices ]

And I do hope you don’t think this blog is infected by PC. We try so hard not to be you know.

  6. I think Cen Tex was referring to the UK’s pc. And I have tried to show just how bad a thing it is here.  Maybe I see more as an outsider and too many here are so used to it, it passes them by. I call it politically correct dictatorship, and so I believe it is.
Read something from home yesterday and it’s scary how much headway it’s made in America.

btw .. also read about a 25,000sq ft mosque getting approval in Temecula, Ca. Isn’t that wine country?  Interesting that.  There was a town meeting and a number of locals of course against, but after (here’s the killer joke line) “public consultation” the mosque got approval. Of course it did. But only after consulting with the public.

Reminds me of the closing of our village post office a few years ago. Our village hall was crammed to the rafters with folks opposed, there was standing room only and no, it wasn’t a tiny hall at all. But you see, the govt. had already made up its mind long before. Our meeting was no more then to toss the dog a bone to make it think attention was being paid to it.  Didn’t fool anyone I don’t believe.  Amazing tho how that govt. found billions for the olympics in 2012, welfare payments to voters, more money for africa, and I know I’m missing out a lot. But the money was there if they’d looked closer to home. Oh yeah .. the scandal of MPs cheating on expenses costing millions over time.

An aside for those who are recent to bmews ... this village has had a post office for hundreds of years. One of the medieval houses still standing and was once the village PO in later years. But anyway .. a very long time until Labor Party politics screwed things up.

  7. Maggie rocks! As do those throwbacks who cling to the old ways, whether they be in the military or not.

And yes, as Peiper intuited, I was referring to the infection of the UK by pc, not to this blog. I don’t think anyone, by any stretch of the imagination, could claim y’all have any vestiges of political correctness.

    That’s a good thing…
