  2. Great link with tons of good photos. Doesn’t look like a whole lot of snow, but the wretched cold that followed turned the whole country into a skating rink.

And a big Happy Anniversary to the Queen. 60 years on the job so far, my goodness.

  3. And Drew ... it’s another redhead.

Wardmom ... my wife’s reaction the same as yours.

  4. Blizzard of ‘78. I remember Blackie, who looked much like this dog except he was, well, black. After the blizzard was over we let him out and he took off through the back acre. Tried to. He kept jumping up and disappearing in the drifts.

We had a twenty-foot drift in our driveway! Our farmhouse was on a hill and the driveway went downhill to the road. The blowing snow had really covered it. My step-father and I went out and looked at that. Then he handed me a shovel! I said NO!

We were snowed in for two weeks. Ran out of heating oil the first week. Fortunately, we never lost electric power. So we’d gather in Mom & Dad’s bedroom with our one electric heater to watch TV.

But it did seem like I had to do all the chores…feed the chickens (and slaughter one) and collect the eggs…I didn’t mind that. I did mind having to go out and care for my sister’s horse. Shovel the manure, feed and water him. Watering had to be done several times a day because, while the pump worked fine, since the water was below the freezing line, the water I pumped had this nasty tendency to freeze. Oh, I also had to groom him. But she would never allow me to take him for a ride. Needless to say, after the ‘emergency’ the horse was gone. As I pointed out to my parents, if it’s her horse, she cares for it as if it were her child. You don’t farm out your children to kiddie kennels…

Oh dear, parents DO do that now don’t they?

I was also the one who dressed warmly to go downstairs and cook for everyone. This met with approval by most, except Mom. Everyone (except Mom) ackowleged even in ‘78 I was a better cook. Especially under what was pretty much camping conditions.

Kitchen water pipes freezing was a problem, until I came up with the novel (I think) solution to run the electric dryer exhaust line into the crawlspace and keep the pipes thawed. My idea, and I was only 17 at the time.

Amazing isn’t peiper? They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Don’t think I came anywhere close to that, but…damn! That picture sure stirred up some memories.

Peiper? Can I ‘borrow’ that photo? I’ve a use for it.

  6. I can’t let this go by:

Finally some eye candy I can enjoy!

We now know what does it for wardmama…Irish setters! (I think that’s the breed in the photo.)

I’ll keep an eye out for Irish setter candy just for wardmama!

  7. You really, really want to get me going - Horses! Yes it does appear to be an Irish setter.

Your story reminds me so of growing up - although in the end I was the one tending all the horses - mine and other peoples. It was my first job and convinced me - I never wanted to run my own business. The excuses people came up with for not even coming to see their horse (which meant I had to ride/work them in addition to my own) nor coming up with my measly monthly bill (I think I charged $90. for food, water and a clean stall).

I don’t remember much about the day to day, winter especially stuff - except that I had to get up so damn early to do the morning care and be able to come back to the house, clean up and get ready for school. And that every spring - we set the horses free and let them run wild in the neighborhood (mostly so that they wouldn’t destroy the pastures in their spring fling frenzy) and were worn out after chasing them down! My best friend in hs was a girl who also had animals - as my neighborhood ‘friends’ didn’t get the rustic life of having animals (heck most of them couldn’t deal with all the dogs we had).
