This is incredibly macabre news. There seems to have been quite a few underlying problems, with this mine and the industry as a whole that caused this incident.
The greater tragedy is that we still rely on an incredibly dirty fossil fuel to power our lives, when nuclear is both safer and renewable if used properly.
You can find all my reasons for preferring nuclear, as well as commentary about the Chinese coal situation (6500 deaths per year) at Earth Sentinel where you will also find peak oil, renewable energy, and climate change news.
May they rest in peace, and my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and friends in this difficult hour.
Yea, I too saw the joyous newspaper headline; no excuses on this one. It wasn’t an erroneous official announcement. They didn’t do anything old fashioned like confirm the bullshit information before printing it. Jerks. How are they better than the Internet rumor mill?
I thought early-on that the presence of toxic gasses was ominous. I’ve done a bit of spelunking, enough to know a few warning signs. Mining is one of the most dangerous jobs. Rest in peace guys.
It’s unforgivable, it would be worse then suffering twice.
Again, the MSM shows the ignorant bloggers why they are so superior, the double check their sources and guarantee the validity of their stories. YEEEE HAAWWWWW let’s hear it for the MSM
OCM: I’d say the PRESS wasn’t the only one at fault. True, they are not expected to crawl into the mine and check for bodies, but journalists are supposed to confirm info like this before they run with it. The local papers that ran the story when it came to them over the wires are not at fault.
I saw the photos when the families got the REAL news. Heartbreaking. What a colossal F*ckup!
I know of one case that’s more negligent: a family that got news their son in VNam was killed. Then they got a letter from him, dated after his death. Ooops! Wrong man. This is not a legend—I saw the man interviewed on TV.
