  1. We might as well kiss AZ goodbye. Nothin’ grows ‘cept cotton and jojoba beans and the people that actually live there are older’n God or speak Spanish. When we made the Gadsden Purchase, we had a choice. For 20 million, we could have bought a seaport on the Gulf of Cortez. For 15 million, we could have bought what we have now. For 10 million, we could have drawn the line at Tucson. Just imagine ... Arizona with a beach front. Jefferson paid 15 million for the Louisana Purchase just 50 years prior. But the ... wait for it ... wait for it ...DEMOCRATS balked at the price. The only reason it sold for 15M is that there are so many copper mines in southern AZ and the telegraph was being built and the railroads NEEDED that. And they did not want to compete with a seaport for shipping the ore.

That will be my lesson for the day. Google it.

  2. The more I hear about stuff like this, the more I believe that there really is an organized effort on the part of liberals to destroy democracy.  How in the hell could any logical person be against having to show ID to vote?  I know this woman is not crazy, so then the only conclusion I can reach is that this veto is part of a plan.  A plan to present as many stumbling blocks as possible (in this case, a greatly increased chance of voter fraud, and thus questionable election returns) to the democractic process.

Wake up people, WE are then only true “liberals” there are - look it up in the dictionary.  It fits me pretty well.  Allan did a post on that a while back.

The people on the left want to stamp out democracy and move toward totalitarianism a la failed Soviet-style rulership.

  3. To go along with Steel’s history lesson:

Arizona and NM were initially one territory, though there was always going to be a separation. Why did it take so long (like during/after the Civil War)? Simple land fight, really. Originally, it was thought that the northern part of the region was useless for just about anything - the American surveyor of the region basically said the Grand Canyon was a big hole in the ground. Both Arizona and NM wanted the whole southern region, and the loser took the north.

During the Civil War, the Confederacy occupied the southern region of AZ/NM. With all the gold and siver there, the North could not afford to let the South have the area. To basically show who was in charge, Lincoln created the Arizona and New Mexico Territories, with the boundries as they are now. The capitol of Arizona Territory was named as Prescott, as the only major “city” in the territory was Tuscon, still controlled by South. (It also didn’t hurt at all that Prescott was in the middle of a bunch of gold mines, all of which was pretty inaccessable to a large movement from the south - go up the 89 sometime to see what I mean.) Later Tuscon, then Pheonix, became the capitol of AZ. In 1912, AZ became a state, with the crazy notions of initiatives, referenda, and judicial recall. Taft wouldn’t sign the bill granting statehood until the recall was deleted - and then after he signed the bill, the recall was put back into the AZ constitution.

    Hmmm...what an idea...judicial recall…

  4. "Aztlan” is what the Mexicans call the parts of the US that used to be Mexican territory in the mid-1800s. I would say that most of the people wanting to return this area to Mexico are not actual Mexicans, as they know what Mexico is like (that is why they came here, after all!), but are Hispanic extremists - mostly citizens, even native-born - a relic of the 70’s. CA’s Lt.Gov. Cruz Bustamante(and former candidate when his once-boss was getting recalled) used to be part of that group (called MEChA).
