  1. I’ve been explaining this to my students.  They and too many of the teachers here have no clue about inelastic demand in an economic system.

  2. 2000 square acres total footprint - the area drilling operations would take, in a non-contiguous area (okay, look it up!).

The area of a square running from Husky Stadium, north to 90th St, over to Green Lake, down and back to Husky Stadium - a square of about 1.8 miles, that is, 2000 acres. (Appologies to non-Seattle residents, but you can check a city map to find the area.)

The State of South Carolina - that total area of the ANWR reserve.

So, how does a non-contiguous area the size of a small village threaten to bring the world as we know it to an end up in ANWR?

The actual facts are overwhelmingly in favor of drilling. The history of the Alaska Pipeline shows that IT is safe using 40 year old technology and when spills occur, they are NOT “devestating.” Caribou herds have increased, life has expanded, NOTHING bad has happened. ANWR will be fine, safe and actually benefit.

But, let’s not let the facts stand in the way of tremulous hand wringing fear mongers, shall we?

  4. Seriously, though guys: Rickvid, you’re right on the money. My dad still works driving trucks up in Prudhoe Bay, and his stories of what it’s like there are exactly the opposite of what you hear spouted in MSM and environmentalist propaganda.

#1: The old-school 1920’s era “Texas” style oil wells are illegal there. Only high-tech horizontal drilling and “no trace” post-drill capping techniques are used or the EPA will shut you down.

#2: After the Exxon Valdez spill the gov’t basically gave the EPA a free hand to do whatever they want wherever and whenever they please in AK. Dad calls EPA men the “Brown Shirts” and/or “Gestapo” for good reason. I thought he was full of BS until I met a guy who got “blacklisted” (aka. fired permanently) from Prudhoe for dropping a single cigarette on the tundra (first and last offense). One can also be blacklisted and lose his or her Union Card for fighting, drinking, leaving engine drips uncovered, interfering with wildlife (even if it’s to save the life of an animal), and for urinating anywhere on the tundra at any time, among many other things. I kid you not! For the offenders there are no appeals, grievances, trials, or second-chances of any kind, ever.

#3: Not to mention the regulation that heavy trucks can drive only upon the ice roads, never the tundra.

#4: Alaskan animals absolutely love the camp and the men.

I can go on, and on, and on.

You can only imagine how many neo-com liberals I’ve educated here in the lower-48 about this, and how shocked they were to hear about it.
