  1. Ace up your sleeve I guess ... although I have no idea at all what possible secret advantage being female could give a fighter pilot. Especially since they’ll all be working almost exclusively as bomber pilots. Old Mohmar knows better than to even let one of his Vietnam era planes onto the runway.

Hey, maybe MoD will award her the Blue Max. Last time I checked you needed 20 air victories for that. These days a take-off counts for one, and a non-fatal landing counts as another, right? And of course we don’t want to forget the extra points for Courageous Restraint. Ha, you can tell I’m being sarcastic. At least the UK papers are trying to run some Ra-Ra pro-military pieces, though they don’t have much to work with on this one. Not yet anyway.
I haven’t seen any of that here.

  2. "Unnamed woman one of ten ...” says the article, which then proceeds to tell us all about Lt. Helen Seymour. Duh???

  4. So WHY again do they call that space a Cockpit??

  5. har har Rich. Your assignment is to search the ‘net to answer your own question. If you look hard enough you will find at least one blog post about a B-52 air crew that is all female. All blonds too IIRC. That old joke came up in that post or it’s comments, and there is a new feminine term to replace it. Find it, and tell us what it is.

  6. Concerning the term “ACE”.  As I understand it, it doesn’t require a certain number of missions, just 5 “Kills”.  If a pilot is credited with 1 1/2 kills after the mission de-briefing, then he needs (obviously) 3 1/2 more to earn ACE status.  In WWII, a waist gunner on a B-17 earned the title ACE in one mission.  He was 6’6” and 260 lbs and could move the twin .50s around like most of us handle a 10/22 (although I’m the exact same size).  So, apparently, one doesn’t even have to be a pilot to be an ACE, just 5 kills.  I haven’t read if that would have included ground AA forces, although I doubt it.

Concerning the pilot in the picture.  She has RED hair!  Piddy da foo’ that gets in her target zone.  She will go to the end of the Earth to exact her tribute and retribution! (Not that I have ever had a redhead PO’ed at me or anything ;) )
