Yes, compared to this gentle 60W-EQ 800 lumen bulb I would prefer about 1200 lumens from some kind of 100W-EQ bulb like the now discontinued CREE TW, with it’s really high 93 CRI. Plenty of light, almost perfect colors, lasts forever. But I’m not paying $40 for it. Nor $30. Not even $16. $8, tops, but I’d plump for $5. And it better not eat more than 14 Watts. And last at least 20,000 hours.

Yes, I am an LED nut. Always have been. About 25 years ago, when I was an undergraduate, I came home with a little component in my fist I found at the electronics geek shop. It was the very first blue LED I’d ever seen. “Guess what I’ve got in my hand and in 15 years I’ll buy you one” I challenged my EE housemate. He couldn’t guess. So I showed him. “A blue LED? Dude, that’s awesome!” “So, can you guess what’s in my hand?” “Duh, a blue LED?” “No, a 72” color TV that’s only an inch thick. 3D picture with 32 times as many pixels.” Ok so I was off a few years. But the 4K super-HD TV that will be affordable in 3 years from today would have blown your panties right off in 1992, back when we dreamed of someday having SVGA monitors for our lightning fast 33mHz 80386 PCs.

  1. My whole house is LED now.  Made a big difference in the power bill.

  2. Same here, they are superb. I also bought a blue led when they were new to the market. If memory serves it was crazy expensive, something like £5 now they are more like 5p. Its stll going strong in my Quad 405-2 amp grin

  3. I Still have a box of Inca bulbs that will last me 10 more years but it is cool that Tech has walked the dog on them so quickly.
Thank goodness the EPA didn’t get involved like the FDA did on E cigs.
    cool grin

  4. I think you all miss the point. It’s not the government’s business to tell us what light bulbs to buy. Yes, I now prefer LEDs myself. But that’s only because the price came down to what I am willing to pay.

BTW, still have my stockpiled incandescant bulbs for when Iran or Best Korea do the EMP thingy.

  5. yeah, but a decent 100w equivalent is still around $10.00.  Hell even a 75 is $8.00+change at wally world.  And if you need a bunch of them(25-30) so you don’t feel as if you are a cave dweller, that can add up to serious coin.  OTOH they do not heat up a room the way incandescent bulbs do…

  6. I switched to leds for the summer and go back to incandescent in the winter. Hey, free heat. Almost.

  7. I have been using Lowe’s Utilitech LED bulbs, less than $2 each. So far, I have been very happy with them. The kids (in spite of threatening to cut off their fingers when they leave the lights on) don’t know how to turn the lights off.  Hence, many are on all night. I know these things have paid for themselves already in power saved.

  8. Somewhere I think I’ve seen a motion detector built into a light switch. Got the same problem with the wife.

  9. I got a few Cree 60w equivalent 5000k daylight bulbs.  Out of the 4 i mounted in the kitchen, 1 is still alive after 2 years, 1 died at 2 years, the reset including a few replacements died within 6 months.  They have a 10 year warranty, so I keep getting free replacements but they dropped that particular style to a cheaper bulb with only a 4 year warranty.  The 75 watt and above bulbs seem to do ok but only time will tell.
