Cough Cough Cough Hack

 

1. Hmm, We might meet up on the same ward.

   Sorry to learn about this and I really do know what a rotten cough is like.
   I have to have something called Codeine Linctus, and I don’t know what the American equivalent would be. I just know that it works, and I had to practically beg my former doc to allow the refills. Been on it on and off for a couple of years.  I have a condition that produces very bad cough and every so often violent ones. Plays havoc with internal muscles etc.

   Will do my best to fill in where possible. Some problem here as you will imagine.
   Take care of yourself first though.  That’s important cos I might have a tech question and you need to be healthy to answer. Lol.

Sounds like you’re doomed.  I have so much sinus drainage just chronically that I wind up coughing hard enough to make myself puke anything from weekly to daily.  We have various codeine formulations here, but good luck prying one loose from most doctors.  I swear, most of them wouldn’t give a cancer patient with a week to live a dose of morphine for fear of addiction.  Funny thing, my dad was pretty high up in one of the big pharma companies, and they could bring home whatever they wanted.  My mother was taken quite aback when I informed her she’d been giving me codeine cough syrup throughout my childhood.  That was good stuff, I tell ya.

3. My Mom (when living in FL 80s mostly) would pay friends who went to Canada to bring codeine back. I’m sure that went the way of the dinosaur since. She had COPD and wouldn’t do the treatments, so she went for the good stuff, when she could. She couldn’t do any of cillins or morphine as she was deathly allergic. My Dad was a Dr - and we were his ‘test subjects’ as new stuff came out. I remember them putting powdered penicillin in a drink for me once, talk about the cure being worse than the disease!

4. Gawd a’mighty, I hope it isn’t that bad! I slept 10 1/2 hours and I woke up dry. Could just be dried out, will see what happens after 2 coffees.

   Sometimes I get this, and it goes away after a day or two. That’s why I think it’s allergies, but maybe I am wrong. Never found a doctor willing to track it down, why I’m always on the edge of sickness .. and now the eustation tube hearing loss, which is also from swelling. Maybe I should find a good allergist and get a $$$ full battery of tests.

   And the thing about the cough is that most of the time I feel just fine otherwise. No other signs of illness. Ok, last night was a bit of fever and sinus headache. But no body aches or chest pains.

   But yes, when I get coughing fits they can be very bad. I’ve had worse than last night’s; I’ve pulled muscles and put my back out from coughing. I’ve nearly blacked out from coughing. This was “merely” being on the verge of vomiting.

5. I remember once long,long ago when Codeine was an over the counter item.  Then it was taken away due to abuse by addicts. 
   Here in the UK, there still are products that contain a “trace” of Codeine sold over the counter, but mostly they are rubbish. My medication is by Rx.
   EvW is correct about doctors (even here) being more worried about addiction then the problems and pain of the patient. I am never certain when they’ll cut me off, and I am not running through the stuff every week. The bottle they give me is small, 200 ml (?).
   I have never been able to work out the stupid measures they have here. Anyway, When home in the states I see docs and try and stock up on some that I can not find here. That is a serious problem for me.
