Conservatism means…

  1. The first real concert I ever went to was Peter, Paul and Mary. My boyfriend and I used to hang out at one of the ‘60s-era coffee houses to end a date evening where PP&M would also hang out whenever they were in town. They’d sit on the floor, feet hanging off the small stage and play for 2 or 3 hours while everyone got into the mood with one big sing-along. A couple years later, I had graduated and gone off to college and my Mother took a job in NYC. Her apartment was on the edge of the Village and on every school break I was headed to NYC and then off to the clubs where all the folk singers were the headliners in those years. I met and started dating one of the talent coordinators for the old Ed Sullivan show and I’d tag along on his scouting missions to all the great clubs, both in the Village as well as other areas of Manhattan. Fun times.

The thing is, I was there in the beginning, and it wasn’t until years and years later that I learned that these shows were all supposed to be big political statements. Either I was very naive when I was “into” this scene or everyone I hung around was too, because it might be clear now and maybe was even clear to some back then, but for the rest of us, it was just a love for folk music and the place to be to have a good time.

  2. I believe you just made my point.

Conservatives ‘conserve’ the good stuff. I love folk music. Even the ‘political’ folk music is good. Might be ‘good’ just because it’s a good song. Might be good in reminding us of some political stupidity.

Peter, Paul, & Mary never seemed to do political music. That’s the reason I still like them. Their politics were personal. I was being kinda mean. I love Puff. But even Puff the Magic Dragon could be interpreted as an anti-war song. Or, as a more recent idiot suggested; ‘Can’t we all just get along?’ And if you can’t get along, could you please just go to sleep in a cave?

Conservatives ‘conserve’ the good stuff. Can you give me an example of liberals ‘conserving’ good stuff?
