Combination Challenge #70

 

1. Still on my first cup of coffee, here, but,

   ...f4 X e5
   f3 X e5...b6 X f2+

   If g1 - f1, then
   ...f2 X e1+
   f1 X e1...d8 - f8
   and the other White Rook is soon gone.

   If White chooses to block the check with e5 - f3, then ...e1 X c3 leaves Black with Bishop and 2 Rooks against Rook and Knight.

   Later on, once I wake up, I’ll realize the error in all of that.

2. I’m on my third cup of coffee and I think I see an answer but I do not like it!  Best I can come up with will have black get his material back (2 pawns) and go up a bit but a win is a long way off,

   I do not like f4 x e5 because after the retake by white’s knight it aims next at the f7 square which gives black problems and I don’t see anything more than possible equality, Black can take the rook on e8 but if white retakes with the King I do not see how to continue,

   I will hold off on my move while I study this a while longer.

3. I held off an hour before putting in my 2¢; I saw the same tack as Samoore and liked it just as poorly as Wes. There is nothing quick here that I can see.

   I think the better way may be to chase the queen away and then go in with the rook, but I’m not really loving that approach either
   1. ..., Bc7
   2. Qc5, Qxg4
   3. Qa3, Rxf3
   Qa3 is a stupid move and I don’t like solutions that demand stupid moves. Taking Whites Knight is good, and the prior Queen takes Pawn makes it impossible for white to play Pawn takes Rook. But the game is still in limbo at that point. If the White Queen stays in her backfield, maybe Black could play Rxd3 and do some pawn hunting, but that will also just burn time.I want to see a Rook at g4 and the Queen at g2. That’s a mate, but it’s going to take a pile of moves to get there.

4. I’ll give a hint: You will only win the exchange and a pawn. No immediate mates.

   d3 - d4...???? f2 - f4? (or maybe f2 -c2)

   Knight to f7 would be silly, and the pawn now blocks the discovered check.

6. Best move as I saw it was:

   1. ...  b6xf2+ white cannot retake because of QxQ with the white knight pinned.
   2. K-f1 BxR

   And white should soon take another pawn and be up two points with a probable win a long way off.

   I saw this move right off but sure spent a lot of time looking for something better.  Another move I analyzed that no one has mentioned yet is 1. ... Qxg4 nice move just does not get enough points back.

7. No Wes, you got it right. A Rook and a pawn at the expense of a Bishop. Sounds like a fair trade to me (if I’m playing Black).
