The more things change, the more they stay the same, what what? Bletchley Park did the exact same thing in the late 30s, running code puzzles in the daily papers to find a crop of Brits who were good at breaking ciphers. From that they broke Enigma, and developed the one of the world’s first computers, which truly was the bombe in it’s day.
The BBC put out a really good documentary recently about two of the unknown heroes of Bletchley Park Bill Tutte http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W._T._Tutte and Tommy Flowers http://www.bletchleypark.org.uk/content/museum/tour24.rhtm They both came from relatively humble backgrounds and received no recognition during their lifetimes, but their work must have saved thousands of lives.
