  1. Too rich for my blood. I doubt if I rate a 100.

    But if things went just right ...

    1. BxB3, PA2xb3 (RxB3+, PA2xB3 works the same)
    2. Qa1++

  2. I think you are much stronger than 100 Drew. The lowest I’ve ever heard of was 900. A nine-year-old girl. And she didn’t stay there for long. She started kicking @ss and hit 1400 within a year. Read about her in Chess Life years ago.

    My first tournament earned me a 1500+ rating. I think you’d be pleasantly surprised if you ever entered a rated tournament. Just based on your problem solving, I’m guessing 1600-1700 range. I’d have to work hard to beat you over-the-board.

    There is a forced win. Not ‘if things went just right…’

    I’m still looking for my old game records. I’ll start posting some when I find them. Both my ‘brilliant’ wins, and my hard-fought losses. And some ‘brilliant’ draws where I saved a ‘lost’ game. There’s one I’m particularly proud of: I dropped a Bishop in the opening (my openings suck), then I went on ‘attack’ and forced a draw. He either took the draw, or I had a forced mate. We discussed the game later, he didn’t understand what hit him! Up a Bishop and could only draw. I had to teach him about ‘corresponding squares’.

  3. White looks good at first, but black attacks with the stunning

    1. Qxa2+ ..... Kxa2
    2. R-a4+ ...... K-b2
    3. R-a1++

    I suppose that white could attempt to flee, but after

    1. Qxa2+ ..... K-c1
    2. B-f4

    the white queen is lost for a mere bishop, and black’s position will be utterly dominant

  4. My first move was the same as Drew’s, another time when it just looks right.  But I am convinced that JW’s move is a win.  So where does that leave me.  I think Bxb3 will win also.  White is 3 points up so whatever happens unless some trade is made soon black is in real difficulty.  Anyway going with Drew my sequence is
    1. Bxb3 ... c2xB
    2. Rxb3+ .. QxR then Qxa2+ should be good enough for a win. If
    2. Rxb3+ .. a2xR then Q-a1 leads to mate.

    Like with CW’s move White can run but is does not help much.

    In conclusion I think CW has it right and I would claim it if as mine if I saw it first but the other will work as well.

  5. Here is my update: JW is right and my move Bxb3 is wrong.  I ran it with Rykba and I am convinced.  Well played Sir!

  6. JW got it. But JW, in the future please use proper format.

    1. … Qxa2+
    2. Kxa2 etc.

    The first move is always White’s, if it’s Black’s turn, start with 1. …(black’s move). The second move would then be 2. (White’s move) Your solution should have been written thus:

    1… Qxa2+
    2. Kxa2 Ra4+
    3. Kb1 Ra1++

    Or:

    1. …Qxa2+
    2. Kc1 Bf4! What we at my chess club used to call a LOQA (Loss Of Queen Accident)

    I might point out to JW that White’s King canna go to b2 because the Black Bishop is covering that square. Since you had the rest, I’m assuming a typo. You meant Kb1?

  8. Yeah, total space cadet move on the formatting on my part, I did know that; and yeah, it was another stupid goof on the typo.

  9. Yankee, so that’s what former Women’s World Champ Susan Polgar is up to? Very interestink. (Sorry, been watching some Hogan’s Heroes reruns.) I had no idea she was in Texas. Last I heard of her she was still in New York City and suing the USCF for being removed the the USCF board. I think they did settle out-of-court.

  10. Christopher,

    Hohan’s heroes?

    That was one of my favorite sitcoms way back when.

    “I know Nothiiiiinnnnng!”

  11. Sorry, I’m still half asleep. I mistyped.....It’s HOGAN’S

  12. Yeah, Yankee, grew up watching it. I checked out the first season from the library. Really a shame what happened to Bob Crane.

    So, do you know ‘nothiiiiinnnnng!’, or are you just quoting Sgt. Schultz?  grin
