Chess Problem #66

  1. Queen moves 1 square (Qc5) to set up what looks like a pin. But it’s a ruse!

White bishop comes down for the set up, Ba2.

    Rook takes pawn.

White, “being unwilling to lose his queen” surrenders or she runs away, and black seals the deal by taking out the knight Qxc3++.

  2. I thought you were giving this up Drew!

And no, you’re totally wrong this time.
    I can’t even find a White bishop.
There isn’t one on the board.

  3. 1. ....  B-g5

Pins white’s Queen to his King, threatening mate with Qxb3

I think the best move to delay mate is
    2. N-b4

    Which leads to
    3. ....  Bxd2
    4. Rxd2+ Q-d5
    5. N-c3 Q-g5

    white can then choose
    6. N-a4 B-b3
    7. N-c3 Q-c5
and white cant stop the loss of more material

    or
    6. ....  Rxb2
    7. Kxb2 Qxd2+
    8. K-b2 Qxc3
    9. R-c1 B-a2+
    10.Kxa2 Qxc1
after which the black king comes out to finish white

  4. I have admit, JW, I’m unable to recreate the moves you do the voodoo that you do! (sorry, I love Mel Brooks)

In point of fact, I can’t do 2. Nb4. Can’t find a White Knight able to land on that square. I can find 2. Nb5 which is just stupid. After 1. … Bg5 White resigns. Yes I know, Drew will be pissed-off. But after f4 and Bxf4 the Queen can’t cover the King anymore. Mate is certain at b2.

  5. Cause I screwed up, I meant
    2. N-a4
which protects the b2 pawn and delays mate, for a while

my notation and proofreading skills are lousy

  6. I get this for black to win the white Queen

    1) ....  Bg5 pins the white Queen
    2) f4 Bxf4 white tries to save his Queen, black takes blocking pawn & restores the pin.
    3) b4 Bxd3!  white advances pawn so it is supported by neighbouring pawn to prevent mate, black takes white Queen

mate is possible if white moves the Queen leaving b2 unprotected

    1) ..... Bg5
    2) Qxg5 Qxb2#

or leaves the Queen in place and does not advance to b4 or move the Knight to a4 to protect b2

    1) ..... Bg5
    2) f4 Bxf4
    3) Rf1 Qxb2!  Here the Rook from d1 is being moved to threaten the bishop, doesn’t make any difference
    4) Kd1 Qxd2#

  7. Al_in_Ottawa, you and JW got the first move right.

    1. … Bg5!
    2. f4. Bxf4

and if 3. Qxf4, Black plays Qxb2# as in mate. It’s not just a pin, it’s a case of overload, the White Queen can’t cover everything.

Obviously this position is solved. Al_in_Ottawa and JW get joint credit. I’ll post the solution and the next problem.
