  1. The Scots, back in the mid-1600’s, when facing interference in their religious institutions from Charles I of England, had a defiant slogan backed up with sharp weapons.

The call went up, “No king but Christ!  No lord but God!”

When a British army showed up to enforce Charles’ policies, the Scots rallied and kicked them back to the south.

This is a lesson worth remembering.

  6. Bulldog—never mentioned Braveheart.

Believe it was the “Convenanteers”—Scottish Protestants who resisted Charles’ attempt to make the Scottish Church more like the Anglician Church in the south.

Charles was King of both England and Scotland.  You’re right it was an English army in that this occured about 40 years prior to the Act of Union that abolished the Scottish monarchy and Parliment thus uniting all of the

However, I belive that the events did occur as I said.

  9. The US press is far from the most free, as the yearly review that the same commitee that wrote this list will tell you. There are far less well-armed populaces in Scandinavia that have fewer restrictions on their press than the US does.

What should be keeping politicians honest is that the people that go into politics—real, grassrots people—are honest themselves. The problem is that we’re too kind to our politicians, and we vote for them even if they don’t do what we ask, inappropriately spend our money, etc.

A well-armed populace is what sets a democracy in motion in most cases. After that, it’s up to our political power—voting—and our decency as people that should keep the government in check. If your government has gotten to the point where you have to bear arms against it, your political process was either flawed, or insufficiently participated in.

Your press isn’t free, but for now, it’s free enough. You just have to make sure to defend it properly. (And for the record, I know that my press isn’t that much freer—but it’s also ‘free enough’.)
