  1. Nope, no agenda here. Do any of you old buggers remember, as I do, that Social Security cards used to say “For Social Security Purposes Only, Not for Identification”?

    I thought so.

    The creep was slow. If I recall correctly it was first used on tax returns as a taxpayer ID number. I recall when military service numbers were phased out and replaced by SS numbers. From there on it became an avalanche. Now you’d be hard pressed to rent a video without using your SS# for ID.

    For the moment I’ll accept, with a drum of salt, that the nice folks in Missouri don’t intend to track individuals but how long will it be before some bright light decides that this system would be an ideal way to track individuals? I give it twenty ten years before there’s a nationwide tracking system. I’m sure it’ll be “for the children”. You know who chants that mantra, dontcha?
