  1. Jeff Larivee, whose wife was killed in the 1989 Montreal massacre, is a spokesman for the Coalition for Gun Control.

I was going to say - bet the killer was a career criminal but no - he legally bought the gun. Sounds more like a real pathetic loser who blames his crappy life on him Mommy & worthless Daddy. So like typical liberals everywhere - everyone is punished and denied their rights and freedoms for the crime of the one.

The gun registries are what I fear most as I believe that many (if not all) who maintain the registries are against private gun ownership and therefore keep the info long after destruction if required and will use it when they feel that they have enough power to do it.

Glad that Canada is taking the first step. Wish America would stop ignorant laws like the Diapers for the Poor and squash the registrations lists once and for all. If you pass the background check for purchase - why the hell does Uncle Obama and his Agents have the right to know what you bought? And to keep the information for any time at all? It is all about control and reducing our Rightto keep and bear arms step by step.

  2. "Even the mad socialists finally figured out what we told them a decade ago.”

No, the mad socialists fought the ending of the longarm registry tooth and nail, and would bring it back in a heart-beat if they had the numbers in Parliament.

Fifteen YEARS, 2 Billion plus thrown away.

Not one fucking crime solved.  Not one.

But that’s okay, they’re sponsoring a bill that will give the police access to your internet traffic via your ISP, WITHOUT A FUCKING WARRANT.

God damn it, I swear it’s gettin’ time to assemble some politicians, ropes, and trees.

  3. Sorry, by “they’re sponsoring a bill”, I should have clarified that the current Conservative majority government is sponsoring that bill.

No politician can be trusted, parties be damned.

  4. Drew one thing I actually thought was quite positive in Canada was the licensing of gun owners. It is a very good safety course which frankly would benefit a lot of people South of the border. You need a license to show you are capable of driving a car in I would imagine every state in the US. So I dont really see the hardship in showing a competent person that you know how to safely handle a firearm.

The long gun registry was a ludicrous waste of money and the Canucks still have some weird anomolies. You can for example buy an SKS and a crate of surplus Czech ammo with a standard license and go let rip. However if its an evil black rifle you need a restricted license, and can only shoot at an approved range. Even some of the .22 rimfire rifles are in this category.....utterly loopy!

  5. Folks, I’d like to apologize for my outburst earlier, this is a _real_ hot-button topic for me.  Few topics can bring me to Tasmanian-devil like cursing, spitting, and twirling, but this one obviously can.

Lyndon:  The firearms laws here need to be ripped out completely and redone by people that aren’t deeply afraid of firearms.

As for licensing people:  This still makes me wary, because that which they can license, they can deny.  Further, Canada does not respect property rights.  When they move a weapon from the unrestricted or restricted classes to the prohibited class, they do not have to grandfather you in so you can continue to own it under the former status.  This puts the owner in a terrible spot; sell it quickly to a foreign buyer before the prohibition comes into effect, turn it into the government with no reimbursement, or expect an inspection from a firearms inspector shortly after the due date with charges and prosecution to follow if you can’t prove the weapon was destroyed.  All this for owning an item, not even necessarily using it, and certainly not using it in a commission of a crime.

Our firearms laws aren’t just nuts, they’re raving-loony nuts.

  6. So I don’t really see the hardship in showing a competent person that you know how to safely handle a firearm.

Because of the 2nd Amendment that is illegal here in the US. It is just that simple. It violates our Constitutional RIGHT to bear arms, without Congress Infringing on those rights.

A gun is not a car - a person doesn’t have to take their gun out into public, a person does not ever have to own a gun in America - and unlike a car & driving (a privilege) - GUN OWNERSHIP IN AMERICA IS A RIGHT.

The majority of gun involved crimes in the US are NOT perpetrated by the law abiding citizens who go to a gun store/show and purchase a gun. They are committed by gang members, drug dealers and thugs on the streets who buy, sell and use guns to command a power that their uneducated, unproductive and (usually) drug addicted lives can not get them.

If every gun crime was treated as the felony it is - then they would be locked up for more time and those stats would go down.

Stop attempting to take away my rights (or advocating it) to make up for the failure of the criminal justice and political systems to deal with the criminals that are undermining civilized societies/countries around the world in the name of ‘social justice’.

  7. This is where I put in the tagline that while driving a car isn’t a right, having the means and devices necessary to defend you and yours most certainly is, and has been so under English Common Law (from which Canadian law descends) since nearly forever.

AGT - go on and rant, that’s what we’re here for. And you did point out my error - the lefties are fighting this tooth an nail, they have NOT seen the light.

Yes.  That.  In spades, and then some!

Y’ever feel like you fell down the rabbit hole, and you’re at the Mad Hatter’s tea party?  That’s how I feel when I look at Canada now versus when I grew up.

The problem with most law now is it stems from one basic, and very harmful assumption:  “Most people can’t be trusted to live their lives, and we must meddle to make their lives better.”

I am not a god damned social experiment.  I wish governments would get that simple idea through their heads.

Further, if you (the government) won’t trust me, why the hell should I trust you at all?  (Why, oh WHY aren’t more people asking that question loudly of their governments?)
