  1. tune

    did he ever return?
    no he never returned,
and his fate is still unlearned.
    he may ride forever
‘neath the streets of new york
he’s the man who never returned…

(with apologies to “Charlie on the MTA” by the Kingston Trio
    about 1959)

  2. Also often happens with government employees at their desks. The protocol in this case is, rather than rudely awaking a possibly merely sleeping government worker, to wave coffee and donuts under his/her nose.  Waving a paycheck is contra-indicated, since the “grab” reflex often survives after death.

  3. I’m surprised that no one lifted his wallet.

  6. What I was gonna say before Rat and Oink cracked me up so badly was that I’m surprised he was only riding it for hours instead of days!!

    LOL

  7. For The Defence—people seldom stay long enough in subway cars to determine that a person hasn’t moved for a long time.  Remember the opening scene in “Married to the Mob” where the mobsters leave a man slouched forward in his commuter railway seat, with his hat over his eyes, and a bullet in his head?

At the VA hospital we found a missing demented Veteran riding up and down the elevator.  Same thing—how many times would an employee have to ride his car (one of 3) to notice that you’d seen this guy a lot?

  8. Then there was the Petula Clark song, “Don’t Sleep in the Subway...”

Perhaps Bernie Goetz DID have the right idea, after all…

  9. Great wife, I guess that living in NYC, you just become so jaded.  She couldn’t even think of calling to see if he’d been in an accident, mugged or killed? Granted I worry (probably too much and too quickly) and I myself have never called to check on my hubby but 6 hours for someone on foot??? That is way too long - he could have probably walked home in that time. Me thinks she just didn’t care, so maybe he’s the lucky one.
