Amazing isn’t it?
In evolution, unnecessary things, like the appendix, or the now-lost other toes on a horse, are gradually weeded out.
Politicians seem to thrive on creating unnecessary things, like Secretary-General-of-the-UN (which itself is entirely UNnecessay), or President of Europe.
My advice: don’t bother. Just let The One, Barack Hussein Obama, appoint a czar for Europe! He’s appointed ‘czars’ for everything else!
JayD this is a cleft stick of the Tories own making to some extent. The problem is essentially this: at the last election the Tories and Labour both assured the public there would be a referendum on the Lisbon Constitution. Shortly afterward the Dutch and French both rejected the Constitution which should have killed it stone dead. However the EU overlords are not so easily put off. They repackaged the Constitution and called it a treaty. This way they can ram it through European parliamnents without the messy business of consulting the people. The people after all cannot be trusted in Europe to decide what is best for them.
In the case of Ireland their constitution means that they have to have a referendum. So the EU allowed this, but shock horror the Irish voted the wrong way. So the EU told them to go back and do it again till they got it right. This they have now done. Meanwhile Labour reneged on the promise to offer a referendum on the basis that the Lisbon Treaty was not the Lisbon Constition even though it is more or less identical in all but name. Brown if you recall snuck in after everyone else had signed like some Grima Wormtongue or Uriah Heep character and signed up to it. The Tories attempted to force them to have a referendum but the Liberal Dummycraps and Labour voted against it.
So now we have a situation where most governments have signed up to it. The remaining two are Poland and the Czech Republic. The EU is putting forth all it’s bullying and propaganda powers to ensure these countries sign on the dotted line. The bottom line is that the EU is on its way to becoming a totalitarian regime. The appoitment of the slimy snake oil salesman Anthony Lynton Bliar just about sums it up really. Who votes for him as President? Certainly not the people of Europe just the EU commission who are appointed by the governments of Europe. As for Bliar posing as Napolean I’m sure it is aphotoshop as I doubt even Bliar would be stupid enough to pose as a man who murdered his captives and poisoned his own wounded men. It is apt though as a new dictatorship is emerging. His hideous slot gobbed wife as Marie Antoinette is pretty apt as well. I hate that women with a passion. In fact I despise her more than her grinning wanker of a husband.
So what to do? The Tories problem is this. There are a large number of Europhiles in the Tory party but there are equally a lot of Eurosceptics. In the past Bliar and Labour exploited this division and capitalised on it at the polls. Now Labour is pretty much hated by the public and the Tories risk allowing Labour to get back in by not taking a risk and offering the people a referendum on Europe. They cannot offer a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty as by the time the elction comes it will be a done deal. They can only offer a referendum on Britain’s continued membership of this organisation.
Personally I think there are enough people who would say f**k you EU. Britain is the second largest contributor to the organisation and we buy more stuff from them than they buy from us, so overall I think Britain could and should say. Thanks but no thanks, we wanted a free trade area, but we do not want to be a part of a European super state. There was an article recently by a Tory in the house of Lords who suggested we tell the EU to bugger off and negotiate trade alliances with our former Commonwealth partners. Sadly I feel that this would no longer work. Australia, New Zealand and Canada were badly shafted by Britain when we joined the EEC and they are likely to have long memories. Cameron needs to become a democrat and put it to the people the problem is the EU has a lot of muscle and would not happily allow Britain to walk away.
Lyndon, Much thanks and my God. Then it’s even worse then I thought.
Maybe its coz I’m American? I don’t know. I see a group of folks called voters. A guy who is head of a political party that claims to be conservative. Well, of sorts anyway.
So then .... the voters are saying hey. We want to vote on this.
You’re saying the voter is being told to buzz off? Go away. If the majority of the people who vote in this country want out, or at least say NO to the signing, but get no vote, what next for England? I’ve been ranting on for a year at least about what I see as your sovereignty being sold down the river.
I know it can lead to some bad stuff and Kim once pointed out and very well, why we (Americans) didn’t want to travel down this road BUT. All I can think of seeing how things are here is, Thank Heaven we have guns in the USA! I can not imagine my countrymen and women, the ones who still feel for the country anyway, I can’t imagine them putting up with stuff like this. I just can’t.
Well I guess there is an upside to the idea of One Europe. Think of all the language that will be dumped. No more ,french, gremans, britains, irish, italians, austrians, poles, checks, yugoslavs, spanish, finns, norwegians, swedes, luxembergers, belgians, romanians, hungarians.Just Europeans and nothing but Europeans. Or should that be EuroPEONs.
If its good eenough for 300 million Americans its good enough for all them folks Right!!
William Rees-Mogg has a good take on it in The Times today http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/columnists/william_rees_mogg/article6860965.ece
The British understand the American constitution, but we do not understand well the European constitutions. Nor do the Europeans understand the Anglo-Saxon concepts of liberal democracy. The European Union does not pretend to have a liberal constitution; perhaps the Lisbon treaty can best be described as an authoritarian federal bureaucracy, seeking almost unlimited powers.
I think it is going to end in a vote eventually in or out. That or a civil war. To my mind Britain would be much better off out of Europe where we could once again negotiate trade deals with countries without having this done for us by the EU. A few years back GWB offered to allow Britain to negotiate favourable trade deals with the US thanks in part to the UK support in Iraq. Bliar had to admit to Bush that he wasn’t able to do this as anything like that has to be negotiated by Brussels. Added to this we would get away from endless red tape and it would put an end to European Court passing judgement on British law. What’s not to like?
For another good take on why Ireland voted yes AEP in The Telegraph has an excellent take.

H eis Mr. Doom and Gloom but has been right about much of it and I suspect he is right on this one. The irish will be able to repent their decision to join the Euro at their leisure.
Lyndon ... Maybe the Irish will be given another vote next year? lol.
