  1. ...and the pundits all around the globe said Communism was dead. It isn’t...not by a long shot.

  2. All the foreign Bolivian based oil companies ought to get together and simply pack up and leave, while dismantling all of the technology these foreign companies and investors brought with them.  If Bolivia wants to send troops to seize the oil and natural gas resources let them.  But don’t help them extract, process, refine, or ship said natural resources.  Bolivia states they have no ability to do any of this on their own.  These foreign companies bought an interest in Bolivia fair and square.  If Bolivia wishes to revoke their purchased rights to Bolivia’s natural resources then let Bolivia develop their own technology to do it.  If all these companies all at once pull out of Bolivia, then Bolivia will be up the creek!  I say count your losses, lick you wounds and bug out!

  4. Agreed, if they want to do the work themselves let them get on with it. The new president is a putz. He thinks he will pander to the peasants by acting like an old school marxist. The Generals won’t put up with this nonsense for long and there will be a revolution. No doubt blamed on the “gringos” up North!

The Brazilian example is a good one though. They produce vast quantities of ethanol to run their cars from sugar cane. Surely the US could use some of the millions of tons of corn they produce each year to be redirected into ethanol production? I know “gasohol” got a bad press in the past but surely it could be made to work?

  6. When civilized people like us are all living in space, right?

Why not just switch all cars to diesel? They can use used vegetable oil as fuel, if need be (you have to filter it and such, but not a huge deal). Turn all those fast-food restaurants into a pit stop for your car as well. Shoot, they throw the stuff out right now. A lot of money to be made here. Suprised (not really) it hasn’t happened yet.

  7. Brasil (that’s how they spell it) must not have much of a Save the Environment movement. Or perhaps the government just shoots them all. And they have zillions of acres of unused land that they can farm. IIRC, the whole country runs on corn and sugar cane. You can do a whole lot with your resources if you don’t have much of any social programs and are eager to exploit the land. It’s US who wants to save the rainforest, not them! Though the cities are elegant and sophisticated, being poor in Brasil is just as bad as being poor in Africa; it’s nearly an automatic death sentance. And they’re the GOOD country in South America!

Bolivia may NOT be screwing the pooch with this one. Mexico stole their oil industry from us back in the ‘30s, Argentina (or Peru?) stole their metals industry from us about 40 years ago, etc., and they’re doing fine with it. Nationalization - the worst form of emminent domain - seems to be a cost of doing business down there. Tin pot dictators come and go, but the few with money and power stay on forever and are the ones really pulling the strings from behind the scenes. I do not believe that any country ever truly gets over the Spanish Disease (colonial era corruption based on nepotism mixed with slavery/feudalism); Cuba came close in the 50s, but then look what happened.

  11. It’s too bad that Capitalists get sucked into these Banana Republics, well known for natonalizing assets after they are built. The problem is once they are built the assets are seized and you can’t get them back...do you think its any wonder why the major NRG companies are putting more and more of their money offshore including floating generating stations? Invest at your own risk!

  14. Gizmo is the name of one of my dogs, he looks like Mel Brooks in Young Frankenstein with those eyes rolling around in his head! The dogs a trip!!
Back to the oil, worked with Mobil and then stayed on after the merger w/Exxon for over 20 yrs traveling the globe. Don’t regret a bit of it, however I do resent the f...ing Sand Chiggers in the Middle East. They treated us like 3rd class pc’s of crap, even though wo us or the 3rd word nationals, they couldn’t have built a flipping thing by themselves...they are too good to get theri hands dirty! fuckyou

  15. Gizmo, when I was in the USAF we had visitors from Iran.  Most of those visitors were nothing but total @ssholes.  Did have a few chuckles at their expense though.  Seems that when they went to the chow hall they removed their very ornate hats and left them on the hat rack by the door.  Seems that some of the people who had to deal with them on a daily basis took out their frustrations on those hats.  Several disappeared and were never seen again.  One hat though had a steaming deposit of fully processed food left in it for the owner of the hat to discover.  That made the daily bulletin.  Something about the Iranians were guests of this country and were to be treated as allies.  No one liked any of them.
