  1. You got it backwards, Skipper. It really is me, they just THINK it’s one of these:

    pig-garden-statue.jpg

Then I attack.  I don’t tell them shit about no weed  .

P.S. The robot deer trick, putting it near the road, sounds like entrapment to me.

  2. Judge,

Why is shooting at a mechanical device a crime?

    Intent?

    Prove it.

Shooting with in X yards of a public road is a crime.

****Oink would never snitch...........besides, I have copies of “those photos”.......

  3. OCM: Those two sheep merely followed me home in the rain. I was innocently drying their wool with a towel.

Anyhow, your secret is safe with me.  Both of them. tongue wink Anyway, it was I who initiated the backrub. cheese

My layman’s understanding of entrapment (without Googling .. honest!) is when the cops to initiate the crime.  For example, an undercover officer in a prostitution sting may stand on a corner “out of uniform”.  It would be entrapment if she walked up to men who were just looking and asked, “Hey Big Guy, wanna doggiestyle ?” The robot deer thing may not be, but it’s close.

  4. My understanding of entrapment is when the officer puts the ‘IDEA’ of the crime

    into your mind.

  5. it’s been used quite often around here..in florida and many other states in the south. here’s an article i found that I thought had some interesting quotes in it...here

“It’s pretty amazing,” said Captain John Miller of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Service. “They tell us they can tell it’s fake but they will shoot it anyway.

UMM, I guess the thought as to what a robotic deer was doing there didn’t cross their thought patterns? they should be locked away for life for stupidity and their own good LOL

  7. You what would be funny?  Put a gun inside the deer and have it shoot back at the poachers?  Now that’s funny!!

  8. I don’t know about the legal status, but ethically, it’s like leaving a jar of cookies out and punishing the kids for stealing. Or like leaving the strawberries out… my Mom said it’s wrong to put temptation in someone’s path.  Now if the guy was sneaking thru the woods with a weapon ...

How about those DEER CROSSING signs!  Why don’t they just go ahead & paint a target on them?

  9. Sorry to disagree Oink, but the law clearly defines what is legal hunting and what is not.  These guys shooting at the dummy deer would have been shooting at a real one if it had been there.  The cops are just setting up the scenario.  As a hunter and gun nut, I personally applaud the effort.

  10. I am reminded of the FAKE police cars that some small towns display to curb speeders, etc.

You see IT, you automatically slow down..................and flip the FAKE the bird as you drive by.

“ROAD SIDE SIGNS WERE MEANT TO BE SHOT AT.”

  11. My uncles a retired NY state conservation officer and he was using one of these automaton deer at least 15 years ago!  Real simple, the deer is stuffed and there is a series of remote controlled servo motors.  Standard remote control used for remote control cars, airplanes, etc.  The one I saw that many years ago could turn it’s head, twitch it’s ears and move it’s tail.  It is illegal in upstate NY to discharge a firearm within so many yards of the highway.  Redneck with a gun rack goes down the road and spots the deer on the side of the road and pulls over.  Some guys fire while still in their truck others get out and fire.  Usually, the conservation officers arrest them before they blow the stuffing out of the remote controlled deer.  Otherwise the perp will end up with a ticket for destroying police property and end up paying for a taxidermy repair job!

  12. I hear the above.  Probably not legally entrapment, but lousy policing if some poor schlub is driving along, only thinking about how to get laid, and you tempt him with a juicy target.  The only way I like the scheme would be if there’s been a problem with idiots shooting at game from the road.  Setting it up in the woods is fine by me—if the guy’s there & armed, he’s poaching.

Focus on crimes already being committed, rather than put temptation in a weak person’s path. I dunno, maybe that’s what they are doing.

  13. A RELEVANT QUESTION:  How many uniformed security people do you see at (ie) WallyWorld?

    None.

    They are all “plain clothed”.............

Is it WallyWorld’s motive to prevent crime or catch criminals?

Posted by OLDCATMAN    United States   02/03/2006  at  10:15 AM

  14. I also see signs: WARNING! SECURITY CAMERAS IN USE & go into the restroom, SHOPLIFTING IS A CRIME—NOT A JOKE (followed by a list of consequences).  It’s not like people are unaware that plain clothes security exists. Wallyworld encourages you not to shoplift, true, mostly by scragging your ass if they catch you.

Did you know that WalMart’s missing inventory (not all necessarily stolen) is almost three-quarter of a BILLION dollars per year?

  15. Oink (#12).  I hate to continue to disagree, but that is not good enaough of a reason.  What if the “juicy target” is a lone female walking to her car?  What if said female was an undercover cop and you tried to rob her?  Is that entrapment simply because it was a target of opportunity?

Same thing here.  It is illegal to shoot from your car, or shoot within so many feet of a roadway.  Simple as that.  If you are hunting deer (presumably these shlubs at least had hunting licenses...meaning they knew the rules.  If not, even a worse scenario) and not following the rules, too bad.

There are a heard of about 25 deer out my office window right now.  I did not take any deer this year during the season.  I would love to go out and pop one, but I can’t.  Very target-rich environment, but I cannot break the law.

Posted by Mr. Christian    United States   02/03/2006  at  11:12 AM

  16. MrC. Yes! Hard call.  Maybe I would differentiate between setting a trap where there has been a problem AND encouraging the weak to break the law, so you can catch them.  There was one case where the cops kept offering a man unsolicited kiddie porn via the internet, then busted him when he bit.  Yeah, maybe he was a bad guy who should be locked up on GP.  But still, not good.

Then, entirely different, is setting up a prostitution sting in an area where neighbors have complained about hookers.  Lets stop already existing crime, not drum up new business.  I cannot draw the line, but I know it has to exist.
