  1. Right then. Time for some long overdue Turtler Analysis, ot justify my continued mooching on the Bandwith.

First and foremost, let’s state the obvious here: don’t panic or fall for the hype too quickly. Anybody remember how the Newspapers TotallyUtterlyCompletley predicted that Kerry would sweep President Bush from office? Dewey v. Truman?

Election predictions are dubious even at the best of times, and a lot are pure wishful thinking or propaganda. I imagine that would be moreso when Obama has such an obvious stake in hoping. That doesn’t mean it’s wrong- in fact my gut is that it probably isn’t. But anybody who takes predictions too seriously deserves what they get.

Secondly: I would be interested in knowing what those last states are, because it would probably say a lot. Nigeria is very densely populated and very tribal, so it could be very different if the Muslim, Sharia using, Hausa/Fulani North and the Christian, Yoruba/Ibo South.

Thirdly: Buhari was already dictator within living memory, and while memory has probably dulled a bit (especially since Goodluck is no saint) it hasn’t been forgotten. For one, he was a ruthless, demanding, and very intolerant leader with the sensitivity of a cinder block. 21 years for cheating on tests, soldiers whipping ordinary civilians if they were late, the works. There is no way that could go well, and his nationwide Sharia policy isn’t going to be so either.

That being said, he is the kind of Lee Kwan Yew dictator who had a reputation as the “Law and Order”, “Tyrannically Tough but Fair/Equally so” dictator. So in light of the blubbering of Boko Haram by the current government people might think he’s just the person to deal with BH. Even if he agrees with far too much of their politics (or maybe because?).

Fourthly: If things go South, it’s not too impossible that the country could flat out break apart on religious and ethnic lines, with the South or some variant thereof facing off against the North. Problem is that the last time that happened it was the Igbo of the Southeast against the rest of the country. There not being a country marked “Biafra” on the map tells you how that went.

And finally, on a somewhat more entertaining note.. since I’m a gamer I think some of you might find this fitting.

It’s a strategy game that take splace in the Ivory Coast, where you play the Democratically Elected leader fighting against a terrorist movement by an ex-dictator (sadly backed by a bunch of eeevil shady corporate types) seeking to bring things back to the bad old days.

Game’s admittedly pretty mediocre but it might have its’ charms. And as for the subject matter having to do with a country whose flag is 2/3rds identical to Cote D’Ivorie facing a resurgent threat from an old dictator, I leave you to figure out.

  2. “President-elect Buhari: ‘A new day and a new Nigeria are upon us’ ”

Muhammadu Buhari has won Nigeria’s presidential election, the country’s Independent National Electoral Commission said. He defeated incumbent Goodluck Jonathan by about 2 million votes.
    ...
His presidential win is the result of his fourth attempt to lead the country since he was ousted 30 years ago.

Buhari is a Sunni Muslim from Nigeria’s poorer North, while Jonathan comes from a Christian and animist South that is rich with oil.

Buhari praised voters for exercising their right peacefully.

“Your vote affirms that you believe Nigeria’s future can be better than what it is today,” he said in his statement. “You voted for change, and now change has come.”

Buhari campaigned as a born-again democrat to allay fears about his strict military regime. He stressed that Nigeria’s security needs to be the next government’s focus.

So we shall see just how far South things go.

Three sucker bets I will make:
    1) Obama will now amazingly allow military aid to Nigeria.
    2) Obama will now amazingly allow oil shipments from Nigeria to US to resume.
    3) US media will never ever mention that David Axelrod’s boys “advised” on Buhari’s campaign ... to the extent that they actually ran the thing. Especially now that that same squad has moved on, and is now “advising” a certain campaign in the UK.
( gosh, this sounds like that old Warren Zevon tune lawyers guns and money, don’t it? )

Obama’s stealth jihad continues, destabilizing nations and pushing radical pisslamic candidates across the muslim world, and propping up major appeasers in other venues.
