  1. Good luck with your back. I got my right knee replaced 6 weeks ago today. I am getting around OK now. It is hell getting old, ain’t it.

  2. I’m not a doctor, but I recommend a general pain killer.

Jack Daniels works well.  Neat, no ice.

  3. Good luck Skipper, hope you get well as painlessly as possible.
BTW, I think you write clearly, concisely and accurately on a broad variety of interesting topics, so don’t sweat the occasional drop-in nigglers and nitpickers.

  4. Skipper, think meat tenderizer and ask your MD about using it for your back problems.

  5. I just had an MRI done today.  I hate those tubes.  The only thing that makes it worthwhile is when they bring your out, their’s a drop dead gorgeous technician waiting for you.

  6. Skipper, I will also keep you in my prayers.

  7. I can relate and sorry to hear that this has happened. I had L3 (25 yo rupture) and L4 (2 yo rupture) cleaned out just slightly more than a year ago. It took a lot to get me under the knife but the daily pain was beyond belief. By the time I got enough meds in me to modulate the pain I was unconscious! Crappy way to live.

The doc prescribed something very interesting (besides the ‘your a fat bastard, lose some weight’) post surgery. Also, my sis-in-law was having L4 issues and she started the same drug right before going into surgery. She stopped the idea of surgery and is doing well. The drug is called Neurontin. (Hmm, I tried to insert a PDR link and it was rejected as a blacklisted item?) It is used to treat epilepsy, the nerve pain associated with shingles AND peripheral nerve pain, such as I have. Most back pain is translated to the legs via irritation or damage of the sciatic nerve(s) (mine are quite damaged). I am not messing with you, ask the doc about this treatment. It may help keep you from under the knife.

Good luck and I fell for you.

  8. Just heard about an outpatient procedure called Kyphoplasty which corrects compression fractures.  I know I guy that just had the procedure and he claims to be a new man.

Here’s some reading if you haven’t done so already.

  9. Skipper BMEWS rocks - believe me now that I am reading 3 people’s college papers (hubby and two daughters)I can spot a grammar error a mile away - which is why they come to me. I agree with dick and peiper - don’t sweat the drops in.

On the back - I’m with you - wish I could get the good stuff. Although I’ve had less problems now that I’m slowing down (getting older for those in Rio Linda). But I know the pain deal - sucks big time. At least you got a doc to listen. I have never gotten a single one to listen at all - only got a pain killer once and that is cause I grabbed him and pointed out a simple fact - that my pain in the back was not caused by wax in my ears (and yes he did try to claim that was the cause of my problem). I horded those little suckers like gold. Now I wish that I could remember exactly what they were.

Take care but be careful mixing the Jack and pain pills - not a good combo.

  10. Skipper,
I feel your pain. I’ve got 2 herniated disks (L3 & L5) and when the back goes out, nothing touches the pain. Best wishes for a complete recovery.

  11. Ohhh man Skipper, do I emphasize with you. My L-5 is broken clean thru at the facet and the column section has drifted out of alignment. I have had sciatica for 10 years (it changes legs and positions every day and the night cramps are a beautiful thing). when it started I weighed about 230lbs and am now up to 315.

They told me surgery, too, but I’m still resisting until some new tech in replacments proves out (flexible titanium disk replacements instead of fusion).

One of my best temporary cures? A hot bath with a bottle of Belgian Ale or a “Crown and 7”.

I hope you drop a ritual killing on the punk ass clown who tried to take your site down.

  12. I’m sorry to hear about your ruptured disk Skipper.  I hope you feel better soon.

Now I don’t mean to sound ignorant, but can ruptured disks be fixed in any way?  Or do they require surgery?

    Hope you get better soon.
