I saw this this morning, and knew you’d want to run with it.
So long Ireland, and thanks for all the fish. They’re in the crapper now too.
PS - Ever so glad that Ireland fought for so damn long for independence, only to throw it all away and join this socialist uber-state. I’m sure the tens of thousands of paddys who died are just smiling down from heaven at this news.
McAsshats.
Drew it could be argued that historically most of Ireland’s troubles originated in Europe. Ever since Henry VIII turned his back on the Church of Rome the Catholic states used Ireland as backdoor route to England. The Irish I think were foolish to adopt the Euro and were sucked into the same boom and bust cycle that has affected Spain, Greece and Portugal. Low European bank interest rates have encouraged a property boom in Ireland. Coupled with very low corporation taxes the Irish economy boomed. Now it has collapsed. They have no option now but to take the pain as they have no currency of their own to devalue. In a way they had no option but to go along with the EU. It will however come back to haunt them if France gets it’s way and they harmonise corporation tax rates. The big companies which have helped Ireland boom such as Intel and Microsoft will bugger off to Poland where wages are cheaper.
What will be interesting to see is how the Tories in Britain take up the challenge. Cameron is playing a dangerous game. He doesn’t wnat to trigger a civil war with his party by coming out in favour of a referendum on the UK membership of the EU, but by not offering this a great deal of Tory voters will be inclined to cast their votes for The UK Independance Party. This will obviously benefit Labour and given the way the system is tilted in favour of Labour it could well result in a hung parliament.
Good point Peiper,I hadnt thought of what an Internal terrorist org like the IRA would do in this event. I wonder who and what their targets of choice will be now that they have an entire continent to target. I hope they got a big fund raising drive scheduled.
