  2. I’m guessing that reader Sara is the same one who runs the Pal2Pal blog? I went through the entire membership list without luck, and she’s the only Sara I know who comes here. But whoever it was that created this graphic, you did great. Many thanks.

  3. Yes, one and the same. I have been one who stayed away from BMEWS for a long time. I just couldn’t bring myself to come here. When the one year point passed, I decided it was time to come take a look at what you all have done with his legacy. I think he would say, “well done!”

I have a bunch of pictures he sent to me, I’ll check out the gallery and see if I have any that are not already posted.

  4. Thanks Sara. And welcome back. It isn’t the same as it used to be, but I hope you like how it is. If not, you can make suggestions. Lots if necessary!!

I found your blog with the Goose Creek story. I had no idea you used to be here.

  5. Yep, I was around when all the cat fighting was going on. I used to tease Allan and tell him he was having another “cantankerous moment,” which was a sure fire way to bring on an even more cantankerous response. He had a heart of gold, never refused a request for help from me and I’m sure many others, but he also had a lightening fuse for those stuck on stupid.

  6. i would hope that all his blog children would send me a link..........would be my pleasure to read.......®

  7. I seem to be monopolizing comments, but one more thing of interest.

I first discovered BMEWS about the same time as I broke my back and I lost my Mother. For months, I had to sleep in a recliner rather than lie flat in bed and the pain I was going through nearly drove me to suicide at one point. I was also suffering from overwhelming loss and grief. I live on the West coast and I was often awake in the wee hours of the morning. So, Allan would log on and post in the morning at about the time I was ready to try to sleep. I loved his wry, sometimes subtle, sometimes sarcastic humor. I started to look forward to those early morning posts so that I could have a good laugh. In fact, I realized that my pain and grief lessened when I laughed, so those posts became my lifeline back to normalcy.

I wrote to Allan to say thank you and somehow we became friends. He would send me jokes, funny pictures, make suggestions of old comedies to watch and sometimes he would just say, “you better be smiling, or else!”

I owe him a huge debt of gratitude for his technical help, but even more for helping me return from some very dark, black depths of pain and despair.

  8. Drew thanks for reminding me. I miss the cantankerous old sod as well. It was difficult coming back here to post but you have done a cracking job in keeping Allan’s legacy alive. Thanks again.

  9. Hi guys, I’ve been hanging around here for almost 4 years now and thought I’d add my 2 cents worth. Great memorial to a true original, this was the first blog I ever bookmarked and I still stop in every day. I think the Skipper would be happy with the way it is going. As far as the current site goes I still enjoy it and reading the comments of all the posters here. I also really enjoy being informed about what is happening over on the other side of the pond.
BTW not to nitpick but Barb was Annoying Little Twerp.

  10. Kingal, you are correct. My error. It was Barb. Dottie was just Dottie. Of all the thousands of members we have had here, those two are among the 6 that got banned. Comments could get out of hand back in those days, and the Skipper did what he felt he had to do.

To their credit, most of these folks did stop by to pay their respects after Allan died. I miss some of them, though many times they were highly and vituperatively critical of my comments. Several of these folks now haunt Vilmar’s blog, so I hope they’re all happy over there.

PS - I’m glad you finally had something to say! LOL

  11. A year - where does the time go? I must also add that this was also the first blog I found and keep on coming back too.

I am glad that you have managed to keep BMEWS going - you know there is nothing like your first love.

  12. You’all are prolly either going to laugh or cry at this, I dunno which…

I remember when it was first opened up to BMEWS readers to post on the BMEWS Recon Group site. I of course sent in my request and got a response back from Allan, thanking me for the kind words and giving me the details on how to post on Recon Group.

That email is really the only one I’d gotten from him and it’s sitting safely in my Yahoo email’s Saved Items folder, as I can’t imagine deleting it.

  13. Does anyone else wonder, as I do, what the Skipper would be writing about Barack “oops” Uh-bama? He would be having a field day, I think.

  14. Drew, you’ve got the hard job. We merely just need to sit back and be entertained.  Criticism from the peanut gallery is no more than people finding fault with others without a clear perspective of whats going on on the field where the game is being played.  With that said, I was surprised a memorial was not posted marking the first anniversary of Skipper’s passing.  You have more than made up for it by posting Sara’s initial tribute. My recommendation is to find some prominent but non overwhelming place for the tribute on the BMEWS opening page.  Perhaps at the very top of the sidebar on the right as a permanent fixture serving as sort of a guiding light or a familiar beacon to us wayward travelers. Just a thought.

  15. I could not remember the date, but I was thinking about and missing Allan last week.
Thank you, for keeping his legacy alive.
I still drop by every day, just quietly.
I found BMEWS just after the cat fight and this was the first site I bookmarked too.
I met with a blogger a few months ago, who was from Nebraska and we were discussing the blogs we visited. BMEWS came up and he made a comment that the Skipper wasn’t posting very much. He was shocked when I told him that the Skipper was gone.
I still miss the old coot (meant lovingly!)
Pal2Pal, I’m thinking that you are right.
Skipper’d be havin’ a ball with the Uh-bama freak show!

  16. A year already? Where does the time go? This is the only blog I have never had to bookmark. I just type in “bar” and it’s the first selection in visited pages.
I was thinking just a few days ago about The Skipper, and wondering how long it had been since he left us. Strange how things like that work out. His acerbic wit and insights grabbed me, and kept my attention here. Fortunately, he has left BMEWS in good hands.
