  1. It’s a shame these few have ruined it for everyone.  I have enjoyed coming by here over the last few months.  I come mainly to see your commentary and stopping to appreciate the photos was like a stress reducer after you’d get my pressure up.  Of course I can understand the complaints on using the pics, after all everyone knows that Right Wingers cannot appreciate art, if we see a pic of a forest, we just think of how many lumber-feet we could pillage.

  2. Skipper, they just fired their best advertising agency.  You probably get more traffic then they do, so send the self-righteous jerks a bill for services rendered.

  3. Skipper, you’re a better person than those who caused you grief.

  4. $$$$$$$$ skipper thats all, art for arts sake, i can take better pictures than most of them, i liked some of the stuff you was posting, maybe i could have told someone who knows someone ect ect, you just gave them free ads, fuck them, let them keep there shit photos.  rasberry

  5. i can understand someone like michael yon going mad about a fantastic picture he took, he should have copyright http://www.michaelyon-online.com/cart/michaelyon-online.com/cart/ my nine year old takes better pictures than some of the crap you posted skipper.
    hmmm

  6. Un-frickin-believable.

The only phrase that comes to mind is:  “No good deed ever goes unpunished.”

I have been in and out of the research business (currently in) over the past decade.  I’ve had many a discussion with colleagues over the “fair use” principle, and proper citation of sources.  I have no doubt that what you were doing clearly fell within “fair use”.  What a bunch of morons.

Wait, one other phrase came to mind:  “F*ck ‘em if they can’t take a joke!”

  7. What a bunch of asshats- As soon as a pic hits the web it’s all done.

Trying to control what someone does with your work once it hits the WWW is a bottomless task.

Don’t want your work to make the rounds? DON’T SHOW IT TO THE PUBLIC.

As someone with two websites I know how rediculous it is to try and stem the unwanted use of my images.

    Get over it.

  9. I’ve been reading this blog for awhile, never commented, but I had to now.  Been amateurishly taking nature pictures since the mid 80s, first with film, and now that I have my Nikon D70, much cheaper with digital.  After all that time I’m just starting to take the camera off the automatic setting and start to practice with shutter speed and aperture (currently reading Bryan Peterson’s “Understanding Exposure Revised Edition").

I’ve also been using the internet since before there was a graphical world wide web and commercial uses were frowned upon (how many of you remember that?) One of the internet’s original purpose was the free sharing of information and learning.  Now these ignoramus’s don’t like what’s going on or disagree with someone’s beliefs and the first thing they do is start threatening lawsuits?

Always thought is was great that The Skipper provided a link to the artist’s work.  It never struck me as stealing. I have to admit that I am biased, I’m an Eagle Scout and fairly conservative so I’m one of those people they are talking about at photo.net.  Just think it’s sad that someone as obviously passionate about the arts as The Skipper can’t share that without some idiots having to bring ignorance and politics into it.

  11. some people are funny i guess

although in this case copyright has absolutely nothing to do with the brouhaha, this is a simply a case of moonbats incensed over seeing their precious photos posted on a website that has on it words (or on this case links/graphics) that say “conservative”.. and what really drove them insane I think is that link to GeorgeWBush.com

I mean come on now.. Blogs4 Bush/Cheney ‘04 ???  Jeeze.. to any looney left wing pacifier moonbat, that right there smells of neo-con GOP funded bowdown illuminati conspiracy!!

am I right or am I right?

for these people, anything even remotely related related to Bush must be bad.. seriously, unless you think like them, that Bush is the walking anti-christ, pure evil, out to turn this country into a fascist state then conquer the world… if you don’t hate him with the same venom as they do, then you too are just as evil as he is..

there is no reasoning with those folks.. they claim to be liberal, but I always thought to be liberal one had to be open minded.. these people are not.

sadly, I know way too many people around here that are just like that.

  14. Copyrighted or not..  legal or not..  my view is that if it’s exposed to me
or handed to me, it’s mine.  I have it and I feel free to share it with my
family and friends.  That goes for music as well as images.  Selling them is
something else.  I would not, and have not.

  15. You know what these morons remind me of - the kid who always wants to make the rules, run the game and (cheat) to win - and then storms off when someone (smarter) figures out how to beat him at his own game.

As was pointed out - if you don’t want your pics out everywhere in the world - don’t post them on the f***in internet. Man, I’m a techno-idiot (who survives this retched machine only because my hubby is so skilled with them) but even I know that one.

I get bent around the axle by the Land Whale and his clonette ‘Mother’ Sheehan, but I realize that neither one is going to even give a nanosecond of listening to anyone else [too busy with their delusions of grandeur replaying in their heads]. I stepped back and have taken a deep breath and realized that idiots end up shooting themselves in the foot (or head if we are lucky) and eventually people catch on to their schemes (which are usually just to make a buck) and they disappear from the landscape to be replaced by another more creative idiot.

In other words, petty people like that aren’t worth your time and certainly not your concern.

And Skipper, if I had any money - you would certainly get some of it. Sorry but we’s poor right now.

  19. Comrades,

Don’t even get me started about music and the arts. I have worked in both music and theatre for many years, both before and after my service with the Navy. It’s amazing how so many talented people can be so small-minded when it comes to politics.

Seriously, in one production I had a lead in, when word got out that I was “gasp’ a registered Republican, the reaction was as if I had the plague… unbelievable.

As a musician, I am always amazed at how some talented folks seem to think that music cannot exist unless it has some activist undercurrent, that it has to have some sort of moralistic claptrap attached in order to be acceptable, to be legitimate.

I once took a fiction writing course at the local university. The teacher was asking folks why they were taking the course. When my turn came, I relpied that I was hoping to hone my lyric-writing skills, and perhaps even sell some fiction work to help pay bills. This “Doctor” of the arts became enraged that ANYONE would stoop to writing for money. It took me several seconds to get my jaw up off the floor. Oh well…

Anyway, the gist is this: Art should exist for ary’s sake, and nothing else. It doesn’t heed to MEAN anything. We should be able to accept it as it is and critique it as it is displayed/performed. We should be able to appreciate the talent that went into the work, the cleverness of the artist, the overall impression it leaves us. It doesn’t HAVE to mean ANYTHING. It just has to be. And that’s as it should be.

Most artists are dicks with ears. That’s why I pay no attention to the Grammys, Oscars, Tonys or any of the other self-serving fawnfests. MY judgement is the only thing that counts for me. Anything else is crap.

Unless you agree with me, in which case it’s informed opinionsmile

    Respects,

    Gwedd

  20. Due to those morons at photo.net I’ve just added barking-moonbat to the blogs and causes that I’ll happily donate money to.  In addition to Little Green Footballs, Mudville Gazette, Soldiers Angels, Michael Yon (excellent book by the way), and several others I have donated to.  Uh-oh, that must make this a commercial site!

Posted by Sesh    United States   03/05/2006  at  05:26 PM

  21. Thanks for the donation, Sesh. I will apply that $25 to the $275 bill I got from Hosting Matters on March 1. As for making it a commercial site, it ain’t gonna happen. It’s only March and I’m already several hundred dollars in the red. One of the reasons I keep my day job is so I can support my hobby here, which gives me a chance to interact socially with hundreds of people every day and have a lot of fun in the process.

Really gang, if you think about it the pure entertainment value of watching Z-Woof, Oink, OldCatMan and Bulldog go at it every day is priceless. Hollywood couldn’t make a movie that entertaining.

    LOL  clap

Anyone can be accurate and even profound, but it is damned hard work to make criticism charming. h l mencken

I find the real challenge is in debating the women without offending them.

Are you ready to accept my photos again?????????

  24. It may be awhile, Dot. The Skipper is huddled with his attorney, preparing a multi-paged Release From Liability.

LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL

  25. Well, you certainly inspired my new copyright policy. Btw, if you need any help with legal expenses, feel free to point me to a PayPal account as I have some money that I can send you. Not much, but it’s a little that I keep around for a good cause like promoting open source software (HaikuOS and SpamKarma primarily).

Posted by MikeT    United States   03/05/2006  at  07:59 PM

  26. You’re welcome.  I’m in the business of information systems also (I’m a Microsoft servant mostly consulting for health care) and I’m familiar with the price of doing business on the internet.  Keep up the good work.

Posted by Sesh    United States   03/05/2006  at  08:19 PM

  27. Guess the dipshits don’t know how to fix a graphic so a user can’t right click and save it.  But savvy users can get around that by prtscr and sumping into their graphics software.

Oh well, liberal thinking surrounds us.  Screw Photo.net.

BTW, let me know when the coffee mugs are available…

Posted by gkern    United States   03/05/2006  at  09:19 PM

  28. That’s dumping, not sumping - fingers too big.

Posted by gkern    United States   03/05/2006  at  09:20 PM

  29. This deal reminds me vaguely of an old story—The King’s advisor suggests that he punish someone whose greeting was somehow (?) too enthusiastic, or inappropriate. The King says, “If we respond thus to those who wish to honor us, how should we respond to Our Enemies?”

These people are pathetic and pitiful.

Posted by Oink    United States   03/05/2006  at  09:25 PM

  30. Okay, I’ll ‘fess up:  I stole my Fine Art du Jour feature at Stingray from your Photo du Jour idea. I decided not to compete with you though (I mean, who could compete with the Skipper?) and limited my postings to stuff that I like from people who are dead. Dead artists aren’t nearly as whiny as the live ones. Even though you’ve probably never been to me site (ahem, Stingray) I thought that my posts would be a nice complement to yours.

So far no one has complained, especially the dead artists, but I’ve begun giving linkbacks to the sites that posted the art in the first place. I figure that I’m giving their sites free advertising.

Posted by Stingray    United States   03/05/2006  at  10:08 PM

  31. Skipper: My legal dept. says we can own photo.net now that they have slandered us.  monkey

Posted by Z Woof    United States   03/06/2006  at  12:49 PM

  32. Dang, most all the good comments have been made.  Following the link to their web site tells me that they don’t like commercial use without payment - ok.  They think you’re getting rich by posting a few of their photos, but most of all they don’t like the politics here at BMEWS!  I used to be a liberal, but am no longe because I can’t stand closed minded, self righteous pricks who launch ad hominem attacks against anyone they disagree with.  Narrow minded used to equate with conservatism - of course that was 50 years ago.
