4. The most interesting rumor I’ve heard about this was the person behind the fly-by is.....Steven Spielberg.

   Stay with me.

   One of the F-16s doing escort duty had a red vertical stabilizer or tail. This is a very unusual marking, and the only unit I know who has red tails is the 187th Fighter Wing of the Alabama ANG. The 187th FW wears the red tail to celebrate the famous red tailed P-51s flown by the Tuskegee Airmen in WWII. This is not a good thing. It is a GREAT thing. The Tuskegee Airmen were and are a national treasure that we all should want to celebrate their proud history.
   As some know, Spielberg is currently filming a picture to celebrate the Tuskegee Airmen, and I can’t wait to see it.

   Here is where the AF-1 flight gets interesting.

   Imagine a movie which depicts the incredible bravery and challenges of these African-American heroes. As they say, “These heroes had to fight our enemies abroad, but had to fight a different war for respect in their own country.” Wouldn’t it be terrific to show, as the credits roll out, Air Force One, carrying a Black President and escorted by a red tail fighter as a symbol of how far we have come?

   I don’t know if any of this is true, but can you imagine anyone in the chain of command - all the way to the President who wouldn’t sign on to this? I can’t. The flight would be OK’d

   The fact that they chose to keep the people of New York and New Jersey in the dark about the fly-by is beyond stupid. It is tone deaf to 11.  I don’t blame the President for the flight. But I do blame him and his inner circle of being so focused on his “brand” that they are unable to see that someone might look at this or any other action as less than wonderful. All they had to do was get the word out and this would have been a positive rather than a major gaffe.
