  1. Look this has nothing at all to do with whether or not women are competent to serve.  It has everything to do with the fact that we as a culture do not comfortably integrate sex into our public lives.  Sexual relationships always carry a high emotional loading.  This is something your just don’t want on board a nuclear submarine.

Can the women do their jobs well?  I’ve no doubt at all that they could.  The question is how will we deal with it when someone enjoys a little unauthorized R&R (pregnancy? jealousy?) or starts playing a sexual power game.  By the way, sexual power games include prick teasing and rape.  Not good.

This covers both the issue of homosexuals in the military as well as where women do or do not serve.  With homosexuality, not only do you have all the pitfalls of power trips and jealousy, you have it occurring within a culture that is uncomfortable at best (mild understatement) with the whole concept of homosexual activity.  A culture that also includes a strong emotional bond between the people of the same sex serving together and depending upon each other for safety in the face of death.

It can all be dealt with, adapted to or whatever you want to call it.  If just won’t be easy and it may require some huge cultural shifts and functional trade offs.  Those shifts and trade offs are the real points to be debated.

  2. Very well said Jeff. And as well, it can not be at all easy for guys at sea seeing things they yearn for and damn well can’t have. Or most can’t. I recall standing many a watch at sea thinking about other ‘unauthorized’ things.

  3. I do as well Peiper.. I remember UnReps in the Gulf. The USS Yosemite would pull alongside me, and every now and then one of the females would come on deck in ‘working gear’ (read; T-shirt and Dungarees, usually too tight for them) and help load the nets. I had to fight people away from the big-eyes.. It didn’t help…

As for Women serving with men on a Sub.. Boats go out for 4 months and are limited for space as it is.. are they going to partition off an area and a head for the female crew-members? Are they going to have to put female officers on in pairs or quartets, as Officer’s staterooms, depending on class, are 2 or 4 bunks. I don’t think they can afford to put a single female officer into a stateroom and make a (probably) ranking male officer triple up or hot-rack. Beside that, there are the Drama problems of the soap operas that enclosed spaces percolate when there are people of both sexes in residence. I don’t think there are too many places, even on one of the larger nukes where fornication is possible, however, lust is a bigger mother of invention than necessity.

    Just a ramble…

  4. MM a woman going down with 134 men, what could go wrong, perhaps they should employ “working” girls and give the men tickets, any sailors who bat for the other side could trade their tickets. Some subs only have one shower area, it is in theory a weapon of war and not a luxury yacht.
Why dont the flat chested women libbers get on to the muslim women haters and do some good for a change?
There are some jobs unsuitable for normal women, just as some jobs do not suit most men, we are not the same so why expect to do the same jobs, what prats.
