Another Lesson For Virginians

  1. As Heinlein predicted, we are living in crazy times.
The electoral college was designed to protect the less populated states from the big city states. Currently, half the US population lives in 9 states and 2/3s live in 16.

Virginia is in the top 16.

What makes no sense at all is the smaller states committing political suicide by joining in this mass delusional movement regarding the popular vote. All future campaigning will be limited to the top 20 or so metro areas. No one will care about Iowa or New Hampshire. The smaller states will just be expected to succumb to the tyranny of the majority, shut up and continue to provide food and fuel to the cities.

  2. As I watch this unfold from the southwestern portion of the state I’m beginning to wonder just how much of the furor generated by the gun control measures they are attempting to foist on us are part of a planned distraction from their other agendas as evidenced by this type of legislation. Make no mistake, they fully endorse the draconian gun laws, but may be willing to sacrifice them in the short term to gain unfettered future control of the government & then steam roll all their agenda through. I spent nearly 50 years in northern Virginia which along with other urban centers, i.e. Tidewater & Richmond, essentially control Virginia politics. Observing the dichotomy in the 200 miles that separates me from my old & new homes is something that amazes me. If we are not careful the Virginia I grew up in will be gone forever at the hands of carpetbaggers and their agendas.

  3. Seems to me that this is unconstitional. No state my enter into a compact with another state without approval of congress. I’d like to see the smaller states who would end up being disenfranchised twart this scheme by refusing to release their official vote totals until after the deadline for the official EC vote. Withe no certified “popular vote” what can they do.

  4. JimS - you are exactly right, but I think these folks are trying to do an end run around that. They pass laws saying that they will do such a thing, but don’t mention any other states by name. So is it still a compact? Or is it just a “common belief” kind of thing?

Either way, it’s totally wrong. Your solution may work, although it will drive the media nuts. Hey, that’s a win-win!!

    ...

Ed456 - yes, the whole thing devolves into tyranny almost immediately. So, what’s the “456” for? I know what my “458” is all about ... my old hobby of shooting large caliber buffalo rifles. What’s yours?

    ...

Col BG - look at the demographics of your state. Look at where all the new people in Virginia have moved to, and who those people are. Look at WV and their move to absorb the border counties ... who lives there? Draw your own conclusions, but they’ll be raycis ones probably.

There was a little graphic on TV news last night showing that nearly every county in the entire state has declared itself a 2A Sanctuary zone. Thousands of armed peaceful protestors at Richmond the other week. Didn’t make a bit of difference. WTH kind of fascists did your state elect??

  5. Seems you finally found a topic that struck a nerve in our usually silent readership Drew. Well Done.

  6. Thanks. Honest and fair elections have been one of my hot rants for years now, from voter validation to voting methodology. All of that goes out the window if this Popular Vote automaton thing becomes reality. People would pretty much stop voting as it became obvious it was a pointless exercise. Pretty soon just a handful of people - probably seniors stuck in their ways - would make the effort. The snowflakes wouldn’t bother ... “Like, totally EWWW, we had to actually go to the polling center? Yeah, no. Or we had to fill out a paper ballot and mail it in with a stamp? OMG, that’s so Boomer.” ... and soon thereafter the whole thing would devolve into tyranny.

Which is exactly what the commie mothafugga leftists want.

Hmm, just wondering if being a commie tyranny for a week or two might have advantages. Us bitter clinger deplorables are the silent majority, angry sheep but sheep nonetheless. Taxpaying sheep too. The radical left are the problem types; antifa, protestors, uppities, college students, dykes and fairies, freaks and hairies, etc. Put them up against the wall first like good Stalinists do. Purged. THEN the sheep have an uprising.

  7. I believe one word can sum up what got us to this point in Virginia - Apathy. In the Nov 2019 elections many Democrats & a few Republicans ran unopposed & turnout was pitiful. That was the case in my district, both my state delegate (Republican) & state senator(Democrat) were unopposed. My State Senator (John Edwards) is one of the Democrats they believe will not support & thereby ultimately help derail the AWB, that while really watered down from it’s original form, is still far from palatable for gun owners. They increased to he magazine limit proposal from 10 t0 12 & reduced the penalty to a misdemeanor but left transport of over capacity mags as a felony. The AWB was sponsored in the house by Mark Levine, who prior to his election was a legislative aide to Barney Frank, Northern Va will be the death of this state. There is a you tube of this ass hat addressing a town hall & it is truly amazing in it’s ignorance. I always say you can’t complain if you don’t vote & given my penchant for the former- if the polls are open I’m there. Virginia has really off year elections, we will not vote for a new governor, house of delegates and some senators until Nov 2021.

The Dems have, is as their usual bent, gone Bat Guano crazy with their liberal agenda, and kicked a hornet’s nest as evidenced by the 2A sanctuary movement, if that same fervor had been evident in the Nov 2019 election we might not be in this position, if it can continue for another 20 months & we can run a republican in every race & elect a majority, we maybe able to reverse course. We’ll see- stay tuned.

  8. Drew - “Honest & fair elections” seem also to fall into the “OK Boomer!” realm of disregarding common sense and tradition.

You cannot open a bank account, buy real estate, buy effective cold/allergy medicine, buy a firearm or fly commercially without ID. Increasingly you can’t buy alcohol or tobacco without ID regardless of age. You need ID to open a brokerage account and you can’t do it with cash. There a lot of government buildings you can’t enter without ID.

Are these every day limitations discriminatory?  It seems ID theft is of concern and a bad thing in every area except the polling stations.

If voting is a basic right and no ID is required then all other services that are being converted to basic rights should also eschew IDs. Therefore, (a) all people should be granted use of the health care system without having to prove who they are or answering dozens/hundreds of irrelevant questions and (b) Bernie says having a job is a basic right; if so, then no one should have to prove who they are, their qualifications or experience — the “need” for a job is sufficient.

Col. Bat Guano — Two supporting quotes:

“The greatest dangers to liberty lurk in insidious encroachment by men of zeal, well-meaning, but without understanding.” — Justice Louis Brandeis

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.” — C. S. Lewis
