  1. Astonishing! We’ve finally got the skin for the STARSHIPS! excaim But seriously, this is a wonderful concept, if we can ever get to use the stuff.

  2. We could make it out of all those nasty greenhouse gases! I saw a program over a decade ago about carbon nano tubes. So where are they? Like cmblake6 I think it’s a great concept but when will we see something useable?

  3. The only things which are missing, blake, is the drive and artificial gravity.

  4. Gravity.... There’s another Larry Niven idea....

I wouldn’t be surprised if the key to making this stuff in commercial quantity is making it in free fall. It certainly takes the effort out of growing perfect crystals, and the hex lattice shown is pretty much the standard ‘crystal structure’ for nearly anything with carbon as its principle component.

  5. And pretty much anything can be broken down into carbon. Spare asteroids, moon dust, etc.

  6. Not an original thought; but how do we get rid of the stuff once it’s made?

    Ahhh, but ARE we?
