  1. Memory fades as do the last of the veterans of the greatest wars of the last century.  Soon there will be none and then, how will we remember them?  Some fading footage on the History Channel?  Rest in peace Bill Stone, you are not forgotten yet.

In San Pedro, California, is a WWI coast artillery emplacement.  Back in the day, it’s disappearing 14” guns controlled the entire channel, from the mainland to Catalina Island.  Some of the local veterans groups have been doing a piece by piece restoration on it for some years and it’s now known as the Ft. MacArthur Museum.  It’s situated on several hundred acres of land that the developers haven’t gotten their hooks into yet.

Elsewhere on the land is an art gallery and other nice things including a marine mammal care center.  Recently, it was decided to add an amphitheater for outdoor plays in the summer.  On the hundreds of acres available, they didn’t build it on a piece of vacant land.  One of the gun emplacements is to be the basis for the amphitheater.  A piece at a time, the past is being obliterated.
