  1. I suppose it is too much to ask that parents actually restrict their child’s access to the internet until they learn some critical thinking skills.  Parents need to enforce stricter controls, it’s as simple as that.  Too bad we live in a society that won’t put blame where it belongs.

  2. To bad this kid didn’t have his parents.  His dad is dead, and his mother is in a nursing home.  He was living with his grandfather who had a live in lover.  Not much of a family structure.

  3. We now know that some childrens’ medications increase suicide.

Is it the internet or medication? question

  4. I would say this little bastard decided to act when SCOTUS ruled that 16- and 17-year-olds can no longer be executed.

Besides he took care of that problem for us didn’t he!

  5. How to deal with this situation?

I’ll tell you EXACTLY how to deal with it.

An unarmed security guard? WTF is that? What use is an UNARMED security Guard?

Gun free zone= come in and kill whoever you want, there is NO ONE here that can defend themselves.

Arm the fricking security guards, and allow the teachers and adults that have concealed weapons permits to carry on school grounds.

Going offense on a problem like this is flushning money down a toilet, a little defense can help a LOT.....

Allowing a shooting spree like this to occurr, because you have a school full of victims is just ASKING for it to occur.

Israel has not had a school shooting in how long? and why is that? Because the fricking adults are ARMED!!!

These liberal gun banners are IDIOTS, take away the guns, and crimes with guns have and will skyrocket, because the ONLY ones with guns are the criminals....

  6. The idea of a 53 year old, $9 an hour, armed security guard with no benefits and his “one” bullet in his shirt pocket does not make me feel any safer, at school or the mall.

No one “allows” this crap to happen. There was no way to predict this murder spree and there is no way to prevent it from happening again.

The Teachers who locked their classroom doors at the first sign of trouble, a lesson from the aftermath of Columbine, was the best and only defense.

We can only be mindful of past tragedies and try to be aware enough to yell DUCK at the right time.

  7. You could always go ahead and hire qualified guards.

  8. This guy was definitely a loony. In the old days he would have been thrown into an institution.

  9. In the old days, He would have, years ago, been dragged by his ear out to the woodshed and given a proper whooping.

  10. You asked about the parents. I am a computer systems administrator. I have about as much comuter savvy as any parent, and I can’t monitor or track everything the kids do. They know I watch the traffic at home, but once they were old enough to go out, they are at friend’s houses, they use the phone, they have email accounts I don’t know about, and now have college accounts. They have their own passwords and online storage. Laying this on parents is impossible once the kids are mid-teens or so.

Train and arm a percentage of the teachers.
This kid retreated and killed himself as soon as some other firearms were present. Allow concealed carry permit holders to carry everywhere. It might not stop him from shooting someone, but it would limit the rampages.

  12. OCM -
Around here at least, one of the main requirements for obtaining a concealed-carry license is demonstrable proof of ability to hit the target.  I’d worry more about the cops catching kids in the crossfire than private citizens, actually.
Besides, if no one’s shooting at the lunatic, then there’s absolutely nothing keeping him from saving all his bullets for the unarmed.  Little Sarah Jones still winds up dead, and the perp is allowed to continue his rampage.

I’m sorry, but the “crossfire” argument is nothing more than fear-mongering.

  13. Agreed.

  14. Seriously what can we do.....hmmmmm jack squat in alot of incidents but having been through the raising of an off the wall rebel teenager, a good slap upside the head in front of her friends and the old fashion you are grounded until I say so, worked wonders.

I also found that if you make yourself and your rules known to the parents of friends, the monitoring of their actions can be simplified, by laying out your rules out and adhereing to each parents wishes.  Children are just given too many freedoms, as parents are not willing to input time.

BTW when I did hit my daughter in front of her friends it was because she raised her fists against me....at the time I said...ohhhhh we want to play, do we?, come along lets dance mad

  15. You really must have it in for Sarah, whoever she is.....

What is this, some kind of Freudian slip?

    wink

  16. The 16 year old Indian was on PROZAC, got it!

All shooters have one thing in common, their medication.  Wake up peoples!!

  17. Well ... I lived in Albuquerque for lots of years, and had a lot of Navajo and Hopi friends and acquaintances—ever since the conquest of North America, they’ve kind of been at loose ends. Oh, they’ve come to terms with the “white man” and all that, but they still inhabit a very insular culture—and even more so than those of European descent, today’s Indians are loath to interfere with each other’s private lives. It didn’t used to be that way—not so long ago, they had many extended family members who would pull them up by the short hairs and straighten them out—or not. They exist in a kind of limbo, culturally and identity-wise.

None of that is by way of an excuse for this loser—only a bit of background.

So no one wanted to be the one to “force” this kid to “get” life, and common sense—as has been pointed out, his family life just wasn’t --

And Z made an excellent point—this medication stuff to me is only an escape mechanism (the kid’s for taking it, the social welfare people’s for giving it, if that makes sense) --

So, by a tragic confluence of events, this kid managed to be destructive as h**l. But we can’t parent him—and we can’t create a climate of cameras and watchfulness and fear—

Maybe a suggestion box might have helped—if three kids had submitted anonymous tips to the school authorities, it would have given weight to an investigation of this kid. One kid on their own, of course, could have been being spiteful, but three separately might have prompted a closer look. No kid wants to be a snitch—but they all want to do the right thing. So if everyone was aware that that was the policy in schools—I think it might work.

I really think that this kind of destructive act can only be prevented with the other kids’ help ... and that “legislation” is only going to erode our rights and privacy further.

    Dunno ... just musing.
