I’m surprised they left. Here in Ohio they would be considered squatters. You have to actually evict squatters through the courts. My mother-in-law has had to deal with this several times when some of her rental properties were vacant too long.
One time, instead of going through that tedious and expensive process, she hit upon a simple solution… she simply removed the doors to the building. They were gone the next day.
