  2. Nope.

Notice that the bodies of both of these devices are cut into designs. Categorize those designs and you’ve got a clue.

Notice also that, unlike the lower pair of steel Allen keyed bolts, the upper two steel bolts and the brass assemblies they mate with have insulating washers under them.

  3. Monday Morning Phoey.  Just one guess? Limp.

The design of the unit on the left is a dragon, or at least the prow of a Viking longship. The one on the right is a mermaid if you look closely enough. One screw pierces her navel, the other her tail.

    So it’s obvious, right?

    No?

The insulated terminals accept power wires. They power the dual electromagnets in the middle (the black blobs) which cause that steel rod in the middle with the tiny shaft sticking out of the end of it, to vibrate up and down quickly. This is actually the same mechanism that makes a doorbell buzzer buzz.

In use, a long loop ended needle is attached to the tiny shaft and positioned down the middle of the handle, which on these two is the knurled steel cylinder or the ribbed black plastic cylinder.

The tightening screw next to those handles fixes a hollow tube that has a needle sized hole on the forward end. The tube is filled with ink.

When power is applied, the armature vibrates up and down, which causes the needle to pull into the ink tube, pick up a little ink, and then to shoot rapidly out a short distance, 60 times a second. 50 times a second in the UK.

These are tattoo guns, also called tattoo machines.
