Actually, Drew, the first picture is a 1989 Honda Civic Wagovan.
I own one of the little monsters.. an ‘87 to be exact. I get 30MPG in City, and 40+ on the highway, even though it sucks on hills (62 HP, I think) but has room for me to slide my 6’6 frame in with no problems, plus, room for groceries. I put on a set of new tires, cost for 175/R13s is about 200, as compared to what you would pay for what goes on a SUV.. about twice what it would cost to fill an Exploder… It takes a gallon of antifreeze to winterize it, and 3.5 quarts to change the oil. It has 250,000+ miles on it, but still runs like a top.
Not something to take offroading, but plenty for the average urban environment, or the normal family of four going to soccer practice, or band, or PTA, or the beautician’s, or grocery shopping.
Who the hell needs 46.6 (2005 Exploder)cubic feet of cargo nowadays other than a contractor.
Sorry. I’m just a bit on people who run around in SUVs who have obviously never owned a car bigger than a Camry, thus they are on the median, and that “I am the big dog on the road” attitude.
(just ask what I think of people with a cell phone surgically implanted to their ear)
Bill
BTW, the FIT is an excellent car.. a re-release of the Wagovan. :D
When I was driving an 18 wheeler in 1993, THOSE huge things were getting 10-12 MPG. And that’s with an 80,000 lb towing capacity. Anyone wanna bet that there’s a mid size SUV out there with that kinda pulling power? If not, 13-18 MPG is simply unacceptable, at least to my way of thinking.
But ya know.... if the fool wants to spend his money on it, I say let him. And when he can’t afford to gas it up, well… sucks to be you, huh? It’s called free market economics.
To be fair, there are a lot of truck owners in southeast Texas. And I can see their point. A car is a hole you pour money down, while a truck is an investment. In an area with a low population density, sometimes you quite simply MUST HAVE the ability to haul a large load.
But when you don’t have that need, spending the money on a huge gas guzzler just as a status symbol.... well, I feel the same way about that idiot that I do about the idiot who shops at Neiman-Marcus. It’s just another idiot blowing money on status. And I don’t see the sense in outlawing his expensive foolishness, unless in a spirit of fairness you’re going to outlaw things like Neiman-Marcus as well.
Sen. Hussein is gonna be pissed if he can’t buy his arugula.
10-12mpg for a tractor-trailer? Thanks. I always wondered what kind of mileage those things got. I figured 5mpg.
