  1. Wiseguy. Cat’s eyes are the reflective markers set into the road surface, down the middle of the lane and over at the sides. In the US we use a similar thing called Bott’s Dots.

Cat’s Heads are a size of small cobblestone. So you can have cat’s eyes in cat’s heads, but I’m getting off topic.

Do the road reflectors form a solid line along the sides of the roads in England? Because in America they are about twelve feet apart. I can not fathom how a 7 ton tractor going 4mph could skid out of control due to rolling over one of these 1/2” tall bits of plastic. But I did notice the thing has smooth iron wheels ... not what you really want for good traction in the damp. Put some rubber on those rims next time.

  2. Cat’s Eyes are reflective lenses mounted in rubber and set in
cast iron frames in UK roads.  They were a great advance for night driving
when first installed many, many years ago.

Smooth cast iron wheels skid easily on the frames; once sliding starts,
it’s hard to regain grip on a modern road, especially when wet....

  4. Drew the UK cats eyes (the older ones) are as Strobe describes set in rubber in cast iron frames. They are placed in the middle of the road. Newer “cat’s eyes” have reflective plastic markers. These are also located at motorway exits (green) and on the edges of motorways (freeways) with red markings. Amber markings are used to show the central reservation. Those old steam traction engines have a colossal weight and are not easy to stop once they get going.
