A painting on a CD sleeve banned in some stores. Right or Wrong?

  1. Oooh, look at us, all artsy and trendy!

    Who cares?

Yeah, the girl looks rather busted up. At least it’s a painting and not a photograph. Maybe she’s a muslim and got beat for driving down to the corner bazaar for a loaf of pita bread. Maybe the whole album is full of songs about female emancipation in the real world, not just in PC-land. I have no way of knowing.

Art these days is made to provoke, not to show the beauty of the world. Seeing the reaction, I’d have to say the cover work is definitely art.

  2. Art, in any form at any time, is supposed to evoke a specific set of emotional responses. Old farts like us tend to be disgusted because we’re used to art whose purpose was *at least partially* to evoke joy, often in appreciation of beauty. Nowadays art is supported by the taxpayer, so “artists” don’t have to create anything someone would actually *want to buy*. So many of them have decided to evoke shock, horror and disgust instead.

Would I buy it? No. Do I think the government should ban it? No.

Do I think the retailer should have the right to decide “I’m not selling that crap in MY store!”? Absolutely.
