A night full of surprises

My bowling story is over 20 years old.
While dating my current wife, I took her and her youngest son to the local bowling alley. I made the classic mistake: I told them that I hadn’t bowled since 198-, well, it had been almost nine years at the time. Just after I’d graduated boot camp.
Of course, my first time up I bowled a strike! Yikes! So, youngest son is calling me a liar, my soon-to-be-wife is looking askance at me.
It did work out. The youngest son won.
But I’ll never forget how I said ‘See, I’m an amateur’ and bowled a strike on the first ball.
Forgot to mention: neither of them had ever been to a bowling alley. Though later I found out that my wife shoots a mean game of pool. I’ve yet to beat her.
’Both my balls were turning into duds, so I had it done.’
God forbid anyone takes this statement out of context Drew.Just Sayin.
