I hadn’t seen all that when I posted, had never heard of him but gut reaction to his we are the world kind of thinking and just in general, thought eventually ppl in NY would regret their choice. Maybe. But I wasn’t aware of the extent.Reading the comments too was quite an eye opener.

There are some who are suggesting lowering the voting age to 16. AND, for sure that fellow in Scotland who is calling for a break from the UK, wants 16s to have the vote at least for that issue. His thinking being that the young who are idealistic will go along with Scottish independence.
And that’s the state of the world Drew. Or anyway, the state of things here.
I wish I could rope Lyndon into doing editorials for us. He is knowledgeable beyond any doubt on multiple issues with regard to this country, europe, the eu and intl. issues as well.

JayD I cant see he “sweaties” (cockney rhyming slang for Scottish people, sweaty socks = jocks) voting to leave the UK. I like the Scots, by and large hard working decent people. Unfortunately Alex Salmond (the clown you are referring too) is a low life slimy politician. There is a large portion of the Scottish public who have a massive chip on their shoulder about England. This came to my attention many years ago when I was studying in Scotland. At the time England were playing in the UEFA Cup finals. (soccer for you North Americans) Scotland as I recall had not qualified. The jocks were all cheering on England’s opponents. If the role had been reversed and it had been Scotland playing a team my bet is that on the whole Englishmen and women would have wished them well but many of the Scots take a visceral delight in seeing England get a kicking.
Their big beef is that England stole all their oil. There is some justification in this but what they always fail to take into account is the amount of subsidy that flows back to Scotland from England. Personally I would be delighted if they voted to leave the UK as it would mean an end to socialist government in England, but even if Salmond roped in 16 year olds it still wouldn’t be enough. The bottom line is most Jocks know which side their bread is buttered on. If they tried to go it alone it would be a disaster. As it is they get free University education and free NHS prescriptions etc. all subsidised by the English tax payer. We would be substantially better off without them but my view is that Salmond is the worst kindof slimy sack of ordure politico. He knows damn well that Turkey’s don’t vote for Christmas. He is just exploiting the mugs which their chippy attitude to keep him in pole position. At the end of the day the he knows Scottish independence is pipe dream. The kind of independence he wants is where he gets a blank cheque from the English tax payer. The man is an utter arse head.
Oil? Really? I thought their really big beef is that England stole their country. Granted, that was waaay back when ... and I think they’ve given it back recently ... but still.
And of course, knowing that being independent they’d be worse off makes the chip so much bigger.
We’ve got a similar thing or two around here with a)them local boys in Hawaii, b)them frenchie-leaning types up yonder in Canada, c)certain elements in Puerto Rico.
