  1. Peiper, you reference my post? Thanks, I think…

I recently listened to a Scientific American podcast about bananas. Among all the scientific stuff about how bananas are all clones and therefore open to attack by this disease, and we will all do without bananas in a decade or two…

They mentioned how the term ‘banana republic’ came to be. Seems that in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s banana companies, because of the disease that was wiping out banana crops, actually engineered ‘coups’ and ran the countries we now call ‘banana republics’. They needed room to move their plantations. Hence the American ‘intervention’ into Nicaragua in the ‘20s is very understandable.

Now, because of the relatively new ‘Panama disease’ the Cavendish banana, the one that we’ve known all our lives, is threatened.

(indeed, the ‘big banana’ industry resisted marketing the Cavendish because it was such an inferior banana!)

So, if you are seeing strange looking bananas in your local grocery, it’s because the banana companies are experimenting…

So, a ‘banana republic’ is literally a country run by Dole or Chiquita. The whole purpose is to produce bananas.

Britain: producing bananas… So, if Britain can actually produce ‘fruits’ or…

Methinks I should stop now… grin

I couldn’t find the link on http://www.scientificamerican.com/podcast/. It was early last year. I suggest you subscribe to the SciAm podcast via iTunes.

  2. Excellent, only omission is in the third paragraph, it is persuit of power for powers sake, what separates the left is their inability to achieve power honestly so deception is their only course. Then once they gain power the only way of trying to keep it is buying the votes of the lower dregs, problem is their way kills the patient. (check out the end game of the socialist game in the 1960s in England)
