  1. I have been married for 20 years and I have absolutely no idea what the thing is.  I can’t remember ever seeing one and have no idea what it does or how it works.  I am completely stumped.  Oh, and I have no idea what that silver thingy is either.

  2. It’s a plane, next to a booty. You may call it a “rebooty plane”.

  3. The outer base plate of the thingy seems to be made from folded metal. Medium sheet steel would be my guess. The inner part seems to be milled aluminum. The thinner part looks like it can slide over the lower chrome bolt or rod, while the upper chrome bolt or rod is the pivot point in the groove. Under magnification, the little rod part sticking out of the end of the base is a lever. Looks like a release lever or a light duty locking lever to me.

So where does that put us? Well, the aluminum part, with that interesting hook, can slide a couple inches forward in it’s groove. I don’t think the thin end will be used as a foot pedal to lift or pull back whatever the hook is working against. On the other hand, since the thinner part of the aluminum part is just resting ON the lower chrome bolt, it will rotate around the upper chrome bolt and slide back: the outer V angle of the hook will be lying flush against the steel base plate, with the thinner part sticking up and angled back rather like the handle on a wood plane. Does it then lock into position, which can be unlocked by the lever? I think it might.

This is not a tuning pedal for a kettle drum, it is not a drywall lifting/aligning tool, I don’t think it’s a wood plane (no blade evident!), and I don’t think it’s any kind of ascender or climbing rope tool.

I have no idea what this thing is.

But I’m thinking you COULD run a hose or a flat belt of some kind through it, and the aluminum part could be pushed to apply pressure. Some kind of hose clamp, or something like a tie-down ratchett?

You could also set it against something much larger, and with the aluminum part folded out into the “open” position, apply pressure against it with a hand or foot to tighten some kind of strap or band that goes around the larger thing.

  5. Damn my eyes!
They won’t stay on that silver metal thingum long enough to figure out what it is.  Probably something to do with that little triangle........

  6. Well, I guess we are going to have to rely on the female members to figure this one out.All you manly guys just cant get past that clamping device to the right.
Any chance we have a few gay guys here who could focus for a few seconds?

  7. Thanks for the hat tip, drew.  Yes, men can be witches; the term is gender-neutral.  As far as the quiz, I’m afraid I would need a closeup of the young lady to determine PRECISELY what the unknown piece of equipment is that she is holding.
