  1. It’s been lawful to open carry in Virginia for a very long time almost everywhere in the state. However, a few local jurisdictions had grandfathered “no open carry” laws that were voided by the Legislature earlier this year, effective the 1st of July.

A different issue is carry in an establishment that serves liquor. (Virginia liquor laws do not allow “bars” as liquor licenses require at least 50% of revenue to come from non-liquor sources.) There concealed carry is forbidden but open carry is permitted.

For the last several years, attempts to change the law to permit concealed carry in establishments serving liquor, as long as the person carrying does not drink, have failed. Hence, if you are carrying a concealed handgun and wish to go into such an establishment, you must either lock your firearm in the car or carry it openly.

  2. As recommended by the Imperial Firearms Advisor I bought a Ruger KP944 for my wife.  She LOVES it.  Even though she’s a Brit and has only just started using a handgun, she is thinking of herself as ‘Annie Oakley.’ She’s constantly ‘in the black.’

    My handgun purchase is a CZ 97 B that’s a .45 1911-type.  I pick it up tomorrow and can’t wait.

We’ll both be attending the concealed carry course offered by Bob’s Gun Shop in Norfolk sometime this month.

If anyone knows of a open carry group in the Tidewater area please let me know!  Thanks!

  3. Make sure you buy plenty of ammo for the guns you own.  It’s better to own 1 gun with a couple thousand rounds of ammo than 10 guns with only couple hundred rounds for each gun.

  4. You can never go wrong with a .45 1911 auto. I feel that stopping power is most important, especially considering that most of us will be rookies when the balloon goes up and total accuracy will probably not be possible.

  5. If you don’t have one you really should get a 10/22 (or other .22LR rifle).  Good for stray pests and a cheap day at the range (~$30 including a packed lunch).

  6. Cant beat an old fasioned DA revolver for a “first gun”!  Simple to load, simple to shoot, as close to foolproof as any weapon can get.  It it were me, it would be a 3” .357.  You can load it with .38’s and shoot all day on the cheap.

Under the bed, a good old fasioned pump 12guage is hard to beat smile
