  1. Nice pic of the Humber Bridge, a 2.2km super modern suspension bridge.

What makes it most unique is the deck, which is a 7 sided polyhedron made up from 5 conjoined triangular sub section trusses all covered in partially stressed metal sheathing. The result is a very light deck - it hangs from less than half as many wires as usual - that is superbly strong. Though the footings of the bridge rest on chalk and clay, the bridge is expected to have a 120 year lifespan.

Oh, and it’s 2 lanes wide, in each direction. more info and pictures

  2. Nice job turning a fable about graft and corruption into another Bridge feature. If I didn’t know better I would think you and peiper set this up.

  3. BTW, where is the obligitory Mom’s Day Story Guys?????
    Oh, here it is:

Small taste to get your clicking fingers working:
“This is the best Mother’s Day I could ever have,” said Nancy Ruiz when asked by a reporter last week how this year’s celebration of motherhood would differ from those during the nine years her daughter was missing after she vanished while walking home from junior high school.”

  4. OK, this is a hijack pure and simple, but way to funny to ignore:

“California woman who slapped deputy so she could quit smoking in jail gets her wish: 63 days”

As they say,the rest of the story here:

  5. Those California folks sure have their own unique way of doing things. Besides, I thought that they put folks in jail FOR smoking there?

  6. PS - we all do see the fable, and see things like it nearly every day. Corruption and greed, skimming off the top, payoffs and graft. It’s ever present. So sure, let’s turn it into a bridge post, celebrating technology and innovation, because the fable and what it represents is a bridge too far.

    And too darn common.
