  1. It’s unlawful to bring firearms into a National or Provincial park in Canada (incredibly stupid set of laws/regs, but then again, when isn’t the law being an ass lately?)

Seems the wolves are getting used to the fact that the big scary bipeds aren’t shooting them as much as used to happen and must therefore be part of the wolves’ food-chain.

There’ll be more of this in spite of the continued claims of “extremely rare”.

Pity about the young lady, and my condolences to her family.

  2. Back in the day, when I lived in Bremerton, WA, and spent much time hiking and camping in the Olympics, I NEVER did so without a Bowie knife and a camp axe.

Granted, coyotes weren’t an issue. (I still have trouble believing this, even if they attacked as a pack) But bears were. I encountered bears several times. This usually involved me slowly backing off the path and letting the bear have right-of-way.

I always had axe in hand, but never had to use it. Bear would rise up, sniff, drop back to all fours and amble on by.

As would I, once my heart rate returned to normal.

My point? Bowie knife and axe against a pack of coyotes? I’m sure I’d be scarred, but I’d also be wearing a coyote coat.
