  1. I’ve seen her, Bob.  And maybe she can pull it off on Sunday, who knows?  Thanks for the link…

And by the way, I mean pull off a victory, not something else.

    wink

  2. Ha ha, Tanny....  What would she ‘pull off’? Too funny.

I saw her on an interview and from what I could tell being female is the least of her concerns.  I think it would be way cool if she won.

  3. I’m pulling for Danica myself.  Just wish I could be there.

By the way, the first 500 in my experience was the 1959 edition, when I was 8 years old.  The race broadcast was carried on a station out of Knoxville, TN, and we could just pick it up on the best radio around the house, which happened to be installed in Dad’s 1951 Ford stake truck.  He pulled the truck into the shade of our big maple tree in the west side yard of the house, and I had a fine afternoon of it, sitting in the shade, chowing down on watermelon, drinking RC Cola and listening to the race.  I was already on the verge of being a car-crazy kid, and that experience clinched the case.

Hope everybody enjoys Sunday, and go Danica!

    wink

  4. I bet we see her on Letterman soon, if she hasn’t already been on the show.

Nosing around the Indy site I noticed she’s racing for the Rahal-Letterman team. Yeah, that Letterman. I hadn’t realized he had an interest in a race team but I’m not surprised.

Now if I can remember what channel he’s on…

Oh, she has the 2nd row poll position if I read that chart right. Looks like a good starting place.

  5. Great post. I just got around to reading it. Foyt was my favorite when I was a kid. He raced everything… stock cars, indy cars, sprint cars. They don’t make ‘em like that anymore.

  6. Ditto, Stan.  AJ was brilliant to watch in his day.  Don’t gorget, too, he was an awesome road-racer.  He won many races in that field, including the 24 hours of Le Mans co-driving the Ford GT-40 with Dan Gurney in ‘67.

  7. INC, I had totally forgot about LeMans, but you are right. Was he ever a drag racer? I don’t think so.

  8. Stirling Moss.  Mille Miglia 1955.  I know I’m showing my spiritual vintage, but I would always have to put Moss at the top of the tree, with Caracciola, Nuvolari, Fangio and Rosemeyer.  Great drivers followed, of course, including Foyt and Jim Clark, but those earlier chaps are still my icons.

    Va-RRROOOOMMM!

    wink

  9. Moss and Fangio (5 consecutive Formula 1 titles - a record that stood for nearly 50 years)...both uber-gods.  And I’ll add 2 more:  Brian Redman, who, along with Moss, is still an awesome driver, and Alberto Ascari.

  10. Stan, I don’t think so.  He may have dabbled in it, but I don’t think AJ ever seriously pursued drag racing.

  11. Ascari I remember.  Redman must have come after my attention window was closed (haven’t paid much attention to Grand Prix since Jim Clark’s death).  But since you mention Ascari, you must remember Mike Hawthorn, Dick Seaman and Hermann Lang.

    wink

  12. Did somebody mention Le Mans? I was there in ‘69 as a callow teenager. Had my first real drunken party with my dad and brother courtesy of the Aston Martin Owners Club, celebrating the 10th anniversary of a big win by an Aston Martin car.  LOL  threebeers Ahhh, happy memories. We drove over in an Aston that had raced there in 1953, driven by Reg Parnell - owned by my dad at the time.  LOL

And I’m going again this year, driving in my own classic, a ‘73 Jaguar saloon which I’m restoring myself. I have Stirling Moss’s signature somewhere, given me when I was but 11 years old.  cool smile
