  4. Rich… this may interest you. In fact all of you.  Anything wrongly said will I hope be spotted by LyndonB who actually knows more. Anyway.

At a wild guess the wife thinks this property may be in something called Band H.  Over here, your property tax is based on the band you are in, and she guesses £3,000 a year. In US dollars that works out to $4,581.05 a year.  That does seem a bit low to me for that property BUT ... the tax based on what band you are in determines what you pay.
And here’s an example.  We pay the same tax as the houses on either side of us, and one of those houses is easily worth near a million dollars. He paid almost a million for the property, knocked down the old house that was there and built a new but less pretty monstrosity. He paid 733,026.93 USD for that property.
Here’s a catch for you guys.

Buying a house.  You pay a stamp tax. Not sure what the tax is on that. Might be three percent (?) which goes straight to the govt.  Real estate agents only get 1 and half % btw.
So on top of that 733 he’d have paid an additional one time tax, possibly 3% of the cost.

I don’t think there is any stamp tax on houses under £125,000

If you’re lurking here Lyndon, please check my paper for error. cheers.

  5. The tax man gets you coming or going, sometimes both. In New Jersey, if you say To Hell With It and sell your house to move out of state, the state levies a nice fat exit tax on you. In addition to the 1% Realty Transfer Tax and the 1% Mansion Tax (if your house sells for 1 million or more). Bastiges.
