C’Est Moi!

Yes, yes, yes. I have changed my avatar. I was getting bored with the “Captain Kangaroo” look so I dug back through the family album and discovered this portrait I sat for ten years ago when I was a young lad of 46. I also had fewer chins and sixty pounds less weight. Quite a dashing young fellow if I must say so.

Anyway, this is my incentive to lose weight. I figure if I have to look at this picture every day it just may piss me off enough to get off my rear end and lose the weight my doctor tells me I need to lose. Throughout my life my weight has fluctuated wildly anyway. When I married my first wife in 1969 (at age 19), I weighed 165 pounds (soaking wet). At 6’3” that was one tall, skinny dude. The wedding pictures are still passed around the family as a joke. When I enlisted in the USAF in 1975 my weight had shot up to 260 pounds. After six weeks at Lackland in the hot summer (May-June), I was back down to fighting trim at 205 pounds, which is where my doctors say I should be. When this picture was taken I weighed about 215 pounds. Nowadays, I tip the scales at 275 pounds. Since I cannot endure another six weeks at Lackland I will have to do it all on my own this time.

So pay no attention to this handsome fellow in the avatar. I will be him again in about six months. One damn way or another. Without Sgt. Scott and Sgt. Plaxico’s assistance this time, thank you very much! FLIGHT, ATTEN-HUT! RIIIGHT-FACE! FOR-WAAAARD HARCH!

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:

1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere

It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.
