happy easter?  I guess for some. don’t leave home without your burka.

I couldn’t think of another headline to go with this article I found only today. In fact, this may be my only post for today. Needs to be shared.
Heck of a posting on this day in what I assume is still a Christian country.  Sort of.

More evidence why the West should ban the burka

BY LICIA CORBELLA, CALGARY HERALD

Women who do not wear head scarves are being threatened with violence and even death by Islamic extremists . . .,” states the opening sentence of an April 18 story in the Daily Mail in Britain.

Sadly, nothing unusual there, except that these threats are being made to non-Muslim women. Again, this is not unusual, since that happens throughout much of the Islamic world that imposes rules about dress on all women, regardless of their religion.

What makes the above news so disturbing is the women who are being threatened with violence and even death by Islamic extremists for not wearing a hijab (the Muslim head covering) and a veil (the niqab) are non-Muslim women living in . . . wait for it . . . Great Britain. Yes, you read that correctly. Non-Muslim women in a free and democratic country are being threatened with violence or death in a predominantly Muslim neighbourhood of London, no less.

The story states: “An Asian woman who works in a pharmacy in east London was told to dress more modestly and wear a veil or the shop would be boycotted.

“When she went to the media to talk about the abuse she suffered, a man later entered the pharmacy and told her: ‘If you keep doing these things, we are going to kill you.’ “

The 31-year-old pharmacy clerk has been told to take a “holiday” by the pharmacy owners and she now fears she may lose her job.

The “Talibanesque thugs” are also targeting homosexuals in the neighbourhood of Tower Hamlets, with stickers being plastered on walls saying: “Gay free zone. Verily Allah is severe in punishment.”

This story, and others like it, should put to rest the nonsensical arguments of people who say that the niqab (which leaves just a slit for the eyes) and the burka (which even covers the eyes with a mesh) are just another choice of clothing that women can make. History simply does not back that up. Wherever the niqab becomes common, it eventually becomes mandatory and women are never given a choice of what to wear again. Of the dozens of women I spoke with in Afghanistan in 2003, not one of them said they chose to wear a burka -they were forced to by the Taliban and they hated it.

That’s the problem and that’s, in part, what France is attempting to stop with its ban on face coverings in public, which came into effect on April 11.

In January in England, a London court heard that Mohamed Al-Hakim phoned his cousin, Alya AlSafar, 21, at her west London home issuing a deadline to start re-wearing the hijab or face death.

Last June, right here in Canada, Aqsa Parvez’s father and her brother were sentenced to life in prison for what the judge called the “twisted and repugnant” murder of the 16-year-old for refusing to cover her hair and dress the way they wanted her to.

Parvez was strangled to death in the family’s Mississauga, Ont., home in December 2007. Her father, Muhammad Parvez, and brother Waqas Parvez, 26, pleaded guilty to seconddegree murder.

There are literally dozens of similar stories in western democracies that could be cited.

Tarek Fatah, renowned author and founder of the secular group Muslim Canadian Congress, says he hopes Stephen Harper wins a majority and follows the lead of French President Nicolas Sarkozy and bans the burka and niqab.

“The burka and the niqab is the political uniform of the regiments of the Muslim Brotherhood, which is a fascist, supremacist organization,” explained Fatah, who was reached in his Toronto hospital room, where he is recovering from life-saving surgery to remove a cancerous tumour from his spine.

“You can’t wear a swastika today and not be a Nazi, and the niqab is the swastika of the Muslim Brotherhood,” added Fatah on Tuesday.

“Every woman who wears a burka by choice in the West is a supporter of Islamic fascism, believes in jihad and desires the implementation of sharia law and the destruction of western civilization. There is not one of these women who will say that they are against sharia and they’re against jihad,” he said. “So, we’re dealing with a dress code of a fascist organization that has in its gunsights, the West.”

Nevertheless, our Supreme Court has ruled that it’s unconstitutional, for instance, to ban the Hells Angels criminal organization members from wearing their colours. The big difference, however, is the Hells Angels don’t want every other person on the streets to also wear their uniform. If Islamo-fascists have their way or become the majority, even in a small neighbourhood like Tower Hamlets, they will impose their oppressive dress code on all women, regardless of their individual beliefs. Therein lies the difference.

In Canada, we identify one another by our faces. We are not forced to carry government-issued identification, like in all Islamo-fascist states. Therein lies the biggest difference of all.

jordan wants to put danish cartoonist on trial april 25

Thought the moo-ham-id cartoon controversy was finished, didn’t ya?
Well ... muzzies never forget. Filthy, pig ignorant, unwashed slime have another card they want to play. Have you seen this yet?

Like Europe’s gypos, muslims are a very good example of why sometimes, genocide is acceptable and in the case of muzzies, urgent.

Here ... take a look.

Jordan to try Danish artist over Mohammed cartoon

A Jordanian court will begin this month the trial of Danish cartoonist Kurt Westergaard over a controversial caricature of the Muslim Prophet Mohammed, but it was unclear if he will attend.

AFP - A Jordanian court will begin this month the trial of Danish cartoonist Kurt Westergaard over a controversial caricature of the Muslim Prophet Mohammed, but it was unclear if he will attend.

Zakarya Sheikh, spokesman for a group of local media outlets that sued Westergaard in 2008 for depicting Mohammed with a bomb in his turban, said on Thursday the artist and others have been summoned by a magistrates’ court in Amman to stand trial on April 25.”
A copy of the subpoena obtained by AFP says Westergaard “is accused of the crime of blasphemy.”

“These legal measures seek to prevent attempts to insult Islam and incite racial hatred against Muslims worldwide, particularly in Europe,” Sheikh told AFP.

A Jordanian prosecutor summoned Westergaard for questioning in 2008 after 30 independent newspapers, websites and radio stations in Jordan sued him over his cartoon, which was republished in at least 17 Danish dailies, sparking violent protests in a number of Muslim countries, including the kingdom.

He has been quoted in local news reports as saying that he “would like to go to Amman to stand trial. However, what I fear is that I am convicted in advance.”
“I wanted to depict the terrorists as if they were taking the Prophet Mohammed as a hostage. I have no problem with Islam but with the terrorists,” he said, insisting that he respects Islam but “will not apologise.”

MPs have demanded that the government sever ties with Denmark, and Amman has condemned the caricature, warning that it could spark further extremism and harm relations between Denmark and Muslim countries.

But he respects islam?  Why? What is there to respect?  I’m glad he isn’t one of those wimpy apologists however.

FRANCE BANS BURKAS AS OF TODAY … DEMOS IN LONDON

wow, I’ve never had so much respect for the French. Mighty britain that once had an empire which covered over 1/4 of the earth, now look at us.. lol
- Dan, telford, 11/4/2011 14:43

Well what that’s all about?

Burka ban in France?  Not exactly.  The scummy lice infested sub species are raising hell HERE! Figures.

By the by.  A member of the BNP (Brit Natl. Party) has burned a koran.  He’s been arrested.

OK, I expect to be flamed for this but ... these animals, if we want to think of them as that high on the evolutionary scale, need to be rounded up and placed in special camps where they can earn their freedom thru working. After which ..........  you get the picture.
They are truly a world threat.  They should be entirely eliminated.  If that’s a bit OTT, then they should be deported from every western country they inhabit.
Which of course would leave more of them free to do their worst.  In a world gone pc and utterly illogical and where the left can rule even when they aren’t a majority, well sometimes unpleasant methods must be adopted to fit the unpleasant threat. We all know it won’t happen, but it is pleasant to dream about it.

So why can’t we do this here? Just two arrests as France brings in burka ban (and the only real demo is in LONDON)

* Muslim tycoon encourages women to flout ban

France’s controversial burka ban became law today sparking a protest in Paris during which two women wearing full face veils were arrested.

The demonstrations, however, were on a relatively small scale with the handful of protesters being outnumbered by police, reporters and tourists.

Ironically, the biggest protest was actually in London where a group of women in full black burkas gathered outside the French Embassy.

Anger: Muslim women in full burka demonstrate against the new law outside the French Embassy in London today
image

Shouting slogans and bearing banners with the words Shariah 4 France, Nicolas Sarkozy Burn In Hellfire and Niqab: Honour For Women, they were the most vocal opponents to the new law.

Hateful preacher Abu Izzadeen, who has previously been jailed for incitement, spoke during the protest.

The burka ban has been dogged by controversy until becoming law in France today.

Women who break the new legislation could face fines of 150 euros, or £132, as well as citizenship lessons.

But officers involved in today’s arrests in Paris said they were likely to be released shortly after being questioned about an illegal gathering.

‘They should not be here demonstrating against anything, least of all the face veil ban’, said one officer, who was wearing full riot gear as he stood outside Notre Dame.

‘Women officers will be dealing with the offenders, and the matter will be dealt with as sensitively as possible.’

Alexis Marsan, a public order official who also attended the scene, confirmed that the rally in front of the cathedral was unauthorised, and that others taking part had also been arrested.

Rachid Nekkaz, a Muslim activist who organised the demonstration, said it opposed the ban, which is the first of its kind to be enforced in Europe.

Also preparing to take part was 32-year-old Muslim convert Kenza Drider , who said she would be prepared to contest the legislation at the European Court of Human Rights.

And here’s another thought. That european court and law should be entirely dismantled, all civil rights lawyers should be re-educated and those not capable of that should be shot out of hand.  Judges sitting on that lefty court need re-education and those not capable ... work it out.

Immediate dismantling of all civil and human rights orgs. and elimination of leaders as they won’t be fit for re-ed.

‘This law is an attack on my European rights’, said Mrs Drider, the daughter of Moroccan immigrants.

Police admitted they were enforcing the ban extremely cautiously because of fears of provoking violence.

They fear Muslims extremists will use the law to provoke fights with officers, while rich visitors from countries like Saudi Arabia will also cause trouble .

The law will be very difficult to apply on certain estates, said Patrice Ribeiro, of the Synergie police union.

Referring to two Paris suburbs where riots regularly break out because of alleged discrimination against Muslims, Mr Ribeiro said: ‘I can’t see police going to book dozens of veiled women doing their shopping in Venissieux or in Trappes.

‘It will be the same when a police officer is about to arrest a veiled Saudi who is about to go into Louis Vuitton on the Champs Elysees.

‘In all cases, the forces of order will have to be measured and cautious in their behaviour.’

Synergie has already instructed its members to view the ban as a low priority, and Mr Ribeiro said there would inevitably be incidents.

Mohamed Douhane, another Paris police officer and Synergie member, said he and his colleagues also expected provocation by a minority.

Mr Douhane added: ‘Fundamentalist movements are eager to raise the stakes. The police know they will be held responsible for any public order disturbances.’

Police have already been warned not to arrest women in or around mosques, and citizens de-veilings are also banned.

The strict instructions, from Interior Minister Claude Guent, are contained in a nine page circular issued to officers.

With tensions running high within the countrys six million strong Muslim community, officers have been told to look out for members of the public taking the law into their own hands.

Instead they will have to call the police, who will in turn have four hours to consider whether an offender should be fined.

This will apply to all garments which cover the eyes, although scarfs, hats, and sunglasses are excluded.

As well as a mosque, Muslims will also be able to put on a veil in the privacy of their own homes, a hotel room, or even a car, as long as they are not driving.

Police have already complained that they will have to waste time on burka-chasing, with Denis Jacob, of the Alliance police union, adding: We have more important matters to be dealing with.

The new ban will mean France is officially the second country in Europe, after Belgium, to introduce a full ban on a garment which immigration minister Eric Besson has called a walking coffin.

While French women face the fines and civic duty guidance if they break the law, men who force their wives or daughters to wear burkas will face up to a year in prison, and fines of up to 25,000 pounds.

Posters have already gone up in town halls across France reading: The Republic lives with its face uncovered.

Belgium introduced a full ban last year, although it has not been enforced with any vigour. A ban also looks likely in Holland, Spain and Switzerland.

Did you catch that one sign in the pix above that reads, The Veil. Liberation from man made law.
These life forms are medieval and they want it here, in your country, in your cities.  And by golly they do mean to have it.

Will they eventually get their way?

Stay Tuned.  That is, if they let ya live long enuff.

Eviscerating Lindsey Graham…burning a Koran thrown in for free!

If I’ve learned one thing from these two YouTube posts is that ‘jackass’ is semantically equivalent to ‘Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-INO)’. I’m posting the rest below the fold due to language and violence committed upon a book. Yes, my fellow Americans. You too can witness the burning of a Koran. It’s a shame she doesn’t do the obvious and follow-up by flushing the Koranic ashes down a toilet.

The Failure of Multiculturalism and How to Turn the Tide

Signore e signori, ladies and gentlemen, dear friends of the Magna Carta Foundation, molte grazie. Thank you for inviting me to Rome. It is great to be here in this beautiful city which for many centuries was the capital and the centre of Europe’s Judeo-Christian culture.

Together with Jerusalem and Athens, Rome is the cradle of our Western civilization – the most advanced and superior civilization the world has ever known.

As Westerners, we share the same Judeo-Christian culture. I am from the Netherlands and you are from Italy. Our national cultures are branches of the same tree. We do not belong to multiple cultures, but to different branches of one single culture. This is why when we come to Rome, we all come home in a sense. We belong here, as we also belong in Athens and in Jerusalem.

It is important that we know where our roots are. If we lose them we become deracinated. We become men and women without a culture.

I am here today to talk about multiculturalism. This term has a number of different meanings. I use the term to refer to a specific political ideology. It advocates that all cultures are equal. If they are equal it follows that the state is not allowed to promote any specific cultural values as central and dominant. In other words: multiculturalism holds that the state should not promote a leitkultur, which immigrants have to accept if they want to live in our midst.

It is this ideology of cultural relativism which the German Chancellor Angela Merkel recently referred to when she said that multiculturalism has proved “an absolute failure.”

My friends, I dare say that we have known this all along. Indeed, the premise of the multiculturalist ideology is wrong. Cultures are not equal. They are different, because their roots are different. That is why the multiculturalists try to destroy our roots.

Rome is a very appropriate place to address these issues. There is an old saying which people of our Western culture are all familiar with. “When in Rome, do as the Romans do,” it says. This is an obvious truth: If you move somewhere, you must adapt to the laws and customs of the land.

The multicultural society has undermined this rule of common sense and decency. The multicultural society tells the newcomers who settle in our cities and villages: You are free to behave contrary to our norms and values. Because your norms and values are just as good, perhaps even better, than ours.

It is, indeed, appropriate to discuss these matters here in Rome, because the history of Rome also serves as a warning.

Will Durant, the famous 20th century American historian, wrote that “A great civilization cannot be destroyed from outside if it has not already destroyed itself from within.” This is exactly what happened here, in Rome, 16 centuries ago.

In the 5th century, the Roman Empire fell to the Germanic Barbarians. There is no doubt that the Roman civilization was far superior to that of the Barbarians. And yet, Rome fell. Rome fell because it had suffered a loss of belief in its own civilization. It had lost the will to stand up and fight for survival.

Rome did not fall overnight. Rome fell gradually. The Romans scarcely noticed what was happening. They did not perceive the immigration of the Barbarians as a threat until it was too late. For decades, Germanic Barbarians, attracted by the prosperity of the Empire, had been crossing the border.

At first, the attraction of the Empire on newcomers could be seen as a sign of the cultural, political and economic superiority of Rome. People came to find a better life which their own culture could not provide. But then, on December 31st in the year 406, the Rhine froze and tens of thousands of Germanic Barbarians, crossed the river, flooded the Empire and went on a rampage, destroying every city they passed. In 410, Rome was sacked.

The fall of Rome was a traumatic experience. Numerous books have been written about the cataclysmal event and Europeans were warned not to make the same mistake again. In 1899, in his book ‘The River War,’ Winston Churchill warned that Islam is threatening Europe in the same way as the Barbarians once threatened Rome. “Mohammedanism,” Churchill wrote – I quote – “is a militant and proselytizing faith. No stronger retrograde force exists in the World. […] The civilization of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilization of ancient Rome.” End of quote.

Churchill is right. However, if Europe falls, it will fall because, like ancient Rome, it no longer believes in the superiority of its own civilization. It will fall because it foolishly believes that all cultures are equal and that, consequently, there is no reason why we should fight for our own culture in order to preserve it.

This failure to defend our own culture has turned immigration into the most dangerous threat that can be used against the West. Multiculturalism has made us so tolerant that we tolerate the intolerant.

Ladies and gentlemen, make no mistake: Our opponents are keenly aware of our weakness. They realize that the pattern which led to the fall of Rome, is at play today in the West. They are keenly aware of the importance of Rome as a symbol of the West. Over and over again they hint at the fall of Rome. Rome is constantly on their minds.

Patriotism? Yeah, I can do that!

Ohmigosh. The things we have to do for our country. My friend in Afghanistan sends the following:

WALK NAKED IN AMERICA DAY

Don’t forget to mark your calendars.

As you may already know, it is a sin for a Muslim male to see any woman other than his wife naked and if he does, he must commit suicide.

So next Saturday at 1 PM Eastern Time, all American women are asked to walk out of their house completely naked to help weed out any neighborhood terrorists.

Circling your block for one hour is recommended for this anti-terrorist effort.

All patriotic men are to position themselves in lawn chairs in front of their houses to demonstrate their support for the women and to prove that they are not Muslim terrorist sympathizers.

Since Islam also does not approve of alcohol, a cold 6-pack at your side is further proof of your patriotism.

The American government appreciates your efforts to root out terrorists and applauds your participation in this anti-terrorist activity.

God Bless America!!

P.S.
If you don’t send this to at least 1 person, you’re a terrorist-sympathizing, lily-livered coward and are possibly aiding and abetting terrorists.

Gentlemen. Next Saturday I have to work. I will therefore be able to observe who is on their porch with a six-pack and a naked wife. Furthermore, I will have my camera to document this explosion of patriotism. Thatisall. grin

Pat Condell on an evil, scrounging islamic dirtbag, protesting America.

As if we don’t know.

It would be nuts to allow this grubby bastard into America BUT .... maybe if he is allowed, as Condell says, you folks at home can get an up close and better look at the creep. And maybe some American with a gun will take the grizzly bearded bastard out and improve the world.

Brits have been putting up with the scrounger for a very long time.  I haven’t a clue why.

The ancient loathing between Sunnis and Shi’ites is threatening to tear apart the Muslim world

By John R Bradley
Last updated at 4:14 PM on 18th March 2011

The bitter, bloody feud between the two branches of Islam, the Sunnis and the Shi’ites, has gone on for centuries and now this vicious sectarian strife is exploding again in Bahrain, threatening to cause an even greater conflict in the Middle East between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

The implications of the worsening hostility for the world are nightmarish, for the entire region could soon be gripped by turmoil, bloodshed and economic meltdown. What was naively seen a few weeks ago as a fight between freedom and autocracy could descend into an epic clash between two Muslim ideologies, the savagery made all the worse by their long history of enmity.

The roots of the hostility between Sunni and Shia lie not in profound theological differences, but in the political intrigues that took place in the Muslim world in the 7th Century. When the Prophet Mohamed died in AD 632, the question of the succession to his leadership was dominated by family rivalries and disputes.

image

Essentially, there were four candidates to succeed as ‘caliph’, or leader, and one group in particular, which went on to form the Shi’ites, strongly favoured the claims of Ali, the grandson of Mohamed. Even the name, Shi’ite, derives from ‘party of Ali’. But three times in succession, Ali was passed over as each of the other candidates was chosen before him.

The opposition to Ali deepened the sense of anger among his supporters. Eventually, in this climate of tribal factionalism, Ali became the fourth caliph, though the indignation of his followers was provoked when he was then brutally assassinated.
The tribal feuding in the post-Mohamed era reached its climax at the Battle of Karbala in AD 680. This is really the key moment in the creation of the Shi’ite movement, the point at which the fissure was permanently established.

At the battle, Ali’s grandson, Hussein, was killed and, in the aftermath of his death, he came to be regarded by the Shi’ites as a martyr. The split between the Shi’ites and the opposing faction which took on the name Sunni, or ‘tradition’, has existed ever since that battle, causing endless sectarian trouble across the Middle East and the Arab world. The division soon acquired the trappings of theology. In turn, this has worsened the bigotry and hatred.

For example, fundamentalist Sunnis regard the Shi’ites as heretical because they say the worship of Ali and Hussein contradicts the Muslim belief that Mohamed was the last Prophet. However, most Shi’ites would dispute this, arguing that they revere Ali and Hussein, but do not worship them like they do Mohamed

The Sunni belief in the heresy of the Shi’ites leads to repellent prejudice in Saudi Arabia, which has an overwhelmingly Sunni population and where the Shi’ites are widely loathed. Sunnis, for example, often say that you should never accept any food from a Shi’ite because he will spit in it before he hands it over.

Although the two sects live alongside one another, it isn’t an easy coexistence. Shi’ites face outright discrimination.

Partly this hostility stems from the fact that Saudi Sunnis are mainly Wahabbis, a cult which adopts the most literal and narrow brand of Islamic theology. Indeed, according to the most extreme Wahabbi mentality, the act of killing a Shi’ite infidel will improve a Sunni zealot’s chance of entering heaven.

‘Islam has no place in our country’: New German minister sparks immigration row

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER
Last updated at 1:10 PM on 7th March 2011

Germany’s new interior minister has waded straight into controversy by claiming that Islam is not a key part of the German way of life.

Hans-Peter Friedrich, who took office last week in a cabinet reshuffle, stoked an increasingly serious row about immigration in his country when he told journalists: ‘Islam in Germany is not something supported by history at any point.’

Mr Friedrich was speaking in the context of an inquiry into the killing last week of two U.S. airmen at Frankfurt Airport. The suspect, 21-year-old Kosovan Arid Uka, is believed to be a lone operator motivated by radical Islamist beliefs.

Mr Friedrich later emphasised his position, saying that immigrants ought to be aware of Germany’s ‘western Christian origins’ and learn German ‘first and foremost’.

His comments were a play on the words of German President Christian Wulff, who in an attempt to defuse the integration row, has said that Islam now ‘belongs to Germany’ because of the four million Muslims who live there. Germany has western Europe’s second-biggest Islamic population after France with Turkish the single biggest minority.

Mr Friedrich’s remarks were condemned by opposition Social Democrats, Greens and several members of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s liberal Free Democrat coalition partners. Hartfrid Wolff, a liberal MP, said: ‘Islam has been a real part of Germany for several generations now; it is unhelpful to deny this fact.’

the rest is here

I know it’s far too late now to make Germany and all of Europe .... islam free! But it is a worthwhile dream.

This looks for real to me and frankly I wouldn’t know a way to vet the thing and Snopes has nothing that I could find, so I’m posting it for all to see.

The video is dated but the attitude and the threat is strong as ever.

Poor France if this kind of thing is real and still occurs.

Islamic fundamentalists are already imposing their own brutal puritanism

Well, well. What a total and complete surprise. Who could have guessed that these bastards would show up now that the country had found Freedom and Democracy. Or at any rate, listening to liberals talk you’d think that what’s being referred to as an Arab Spring was heralding a new age of .....
What exactly?

Here’s just a small example.

Suspected Islamists otherwise preoccupied themselves with slitting the throat of a Polish Catholic priest, which, if confirmed, would be the first such sectarian murder in modern Tunisian history. And anti-Semitic slogans could be heard outside Tunisia’s main synagogue: this in a country with no history of persecution of its Jewish minority.

Alright I admit I noticed the word “suspected” and suspected does not always mean that the suspect is in fact guilty.
Still though .... I’m thinking cos I’m not trusting these low lifes, who would have done anything like that?  Can’t be me or Drew. I can account for us. Well, I can account for myself but I’m pretty certain Drew is where he always is.  Searching for red haired opera singers.

I don’t think any of our BMEWS regulars would approve this tho I can’t account for all of em.

I know.

BUSH DID IT and if not him ...  Right.  The Jews!  Gotta be.  Hmmm. Wonder where Doc Jeff has been.  It can’t possibly be those hardy members of the Religion of Peace. Those fighters for freedom so long as that freedom consists of thinking like them.

It will be very interesting to see how the Jasmine Revolution plays out over time.

Sex, brothels and the REAL tyranny threatening the Arab world: Islamic fundamentalists are already imposing their own brutal puritanism

By JOHN R BRADLEY

A few hundred metres from the main mosque in the heart of Tunis’s old quarter lies Abdallah Guech Street, a red-light district which has thrived since the 19th century. Here, the Ottomans legalised and regulated prostitution — as they had in much of the rest of the Muslim world.

Uniquely, though, in the Arab world, the tradition in Tunisia endured. Every one of the country’s historic quarters boasts bordellos; even, most remarkably, Kairouan, Islam’s fourth holiest city after Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem.

In keeping with Tunisia’s deep-rooted secularism and unprecedented championing of Muslim women’s rights, the prostitutes carry cards issued by the Interior Ministry, pay taxes like everyone else and enjoy (along with their clients) the full protection of the law.

Or at least they did until last month’s Jasmine Revolution. But last week, faster than you could scream ‘Allahu Akbar’, hundreds of Islamists raided Abdallah Guech Street armed with Molotov cocktails and knives, torching the brothels, yelling insults at the prostitutes and declaring that Tunisia was now an Islamist state.

As soldiers fired into the air to disperse them, the Islamists won a promise from the interim government that the brothels would be permanently closed.

In other cities, brothels were targeted, too; and there have been demonstrations throughout the country — whose economy is heavily dependent on the vibrant tourism industry — against the sale of alcohol.

When the Tunisian revolution started last month, it was hailed as a template for the rest of the Arab world. But if revolutions are judged by their outcomes rather than their intentions, then the story of post-revolution Tunisia is equally instructive.

The world’s attention has quickly moved on — to Egypt, Bahrain, Libya or the next theatre of this extraordinary, fast-moving drama.

The phrase ‘Arab Spring’ is being touted as if we were witnessing an unambiguous leap forward for ordinary Arabs: history marching towards democracy and pluralism.

No one wishes to contemplate, let alone prepare for, the alternative — that this might end in the restoration of authoritarian rule or, worse, the triumph of a radical Islam.

When David Cameron visited Egypt this week, there were too few signs of the budding liberal democracy which he and other Western leaders had envisioned. He could hardly congratulate his host, a former Air Force commander, for what was, in effect, another military coup. There was no Lech Walesa figure for him to meet, no secular democratic champion of the new Egypt.

The Muslim Brotherhood remains the only political group of any note. The key to being optimistic about Egypt’s future — and the Arab world more generally — is not to look too closely at what is happening on the ground. And to pay as little attention as possible to the events in Tunisia.

For all its restrictions on direct political participation, for decades, Tunisia was the most secular and progressive country the Islamic world has ever known. The regime was the least brutal in the region, its people the wealthiest and best educated.

The poverty level was just 4  per cent when the revolution broke out, which is among the lowest in the world.

Eighty per cent of the population belonged to the middle class. And the education system — allocated more funding than the army — ranked 17th globally in terms of quality. The veil was banned in public institutions, polygamy was outlawed, mosques were shuttered outside prayer times, and men needed permission from the local police to grow a beard.

There quite a bit more and it’s all HERE

15-year-old girl was tricked into flying to Pakistan then forced to marry a 31-year-old man .

At least it didn’t end in her death. And it is not about religion either.  But it is about a sub culture.
Article didn’t say how she even knew where in the city she was held, that the Brit. High Commission was. While this story came across here only a few hours ago, there have been many like it over the last few years.

Teenager battered for refusing arranged marriage after father sold her as £10,000 bride

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER
Last updated at 3:08 PM on 23rd February 2011

A brave teenager has spoken for the first time of the harrowing ordeal of being beaten up in an arranged marriage after her father tried to sell her for £10,000.
The 15-year-old girl was tricked into flying to Pakistan then forced to marry a 31-year-old man so he could get a British passport.

She has described how she feared she would die after being hit, scarred with broken glass and locked up for refusing to get married.
Her harrowing story has been revealed as part of BBC Radio 1’s Newsbeat investigation into forced marriages.

The girl, who would not be named, said: ‘It was just about the money. He was literally selling me and my nationality so I could bring the person back.
‘In pounds, it would have been about £10,000.

‘He whacked me across the face, then I started rebelling more, saying ‘’no’’.
Then he got a glass and scarred my arms. He had somebody holding me from behind and he got a glass and was cutting very deep.
‘I thought he might kill me. I thought I was going to die.’
The beatings started when the young girl refused to get married. She was then locked up without food or water.

Fortunately she summoned her strength and escaped to the British High Commission in Pakistan. She then returned home and was reunited with her worried mother.
Figures obtained by Newsbeat show that her ordeal is one of many suffered by an estimated 1,735 potential forced marriages involving British citizens in 2010.
It is believed that a third of the girls in arranged marriages are under 18. Newsbeat claims that the youngest was just 13.
Campaigners against forced marriages have now called for more awareness of the problem which is largely confined to Asian communities.
Jeremy Browne, the minister in joint charge of the forced marriage unit, said: ‘We think it’s a genuine priority, we want to help people.’

Egypt Gets Its Khomeini, but lets hope it isn’t permanent

There’s a fella named Barry Rubin who runs a blog called ... The Rubin Report.  Good writer and very interesting.

There’s a feature in his newsletter today you may find of special interest and the focus isn’t just Egypt but someone who has just returned.
And it sure looks familiar.

One of Qaradawi’s initiatives has been urging Muslims to settle in the West, of which he said, “that powerful West, which has come to rule the world, should not be left to the influence of the Jews alone.” He contends that the three major threats Muslims face are Zionism, internal integration, and globalization. To survive, he argues, Muslims must fight the Zionists, Crusaders, idolators, and Communists.
Make no mistake, Qaradawi is not some fossilized Islamic ideologue. He is brilliant and innovative, tactically flexible and strategically sophisticated. He is subtle enough to sell himself as a moderate to those who don’t understand the implications of his words or look beneath the surface of his presentation.
What is his view of both the Mubarak regime and the young, Facebook-flourishing liberals who made the revolution? As he said in 2004: “Some Arab and Muslim secularists are following the U.S. government by advocating the kind of reform that will disarm the nation from the elements of strength that are holding our people together.”
Have no doubt. It is Qaradawi, not bin Ladin, who is the most dangerous revolutinary Islamist in the world and he is about to unleash the full force of his power and persuasion on Egypt.

Just a block I took out of his commentary.  Take a look.

Egypt Gets Its Khomeini: Qaradawi Returns in Triumph

By Barry Rubin

Friday, February 18 may be a turning point in Egyptian history. On this day Yusuf al-Qaradawi, the best-known Muslim Brotherhood cleric in the world and one of the most famous Islamist thinkers, will address a mass rally in Cairo.

It was 32 years ago almost to the day when Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini returned in triumph to Tehran to take the leadership of that country. Qaradawi has a tougher job but he’s up to the challenge if his health holds up.

Up until now, the Egyptian revolution generally, and the Brotherhood in particular, has lacked a charismatic thinker, someone who could really mobilize the masses. Qaradawi is that man. Long resident in the Gulf, he is returning to his homeland in triumph. Through internet, radio, his 100 books, and his weekly satellite television program, Qaradawi has been an articulate voice for revolutionary Islamism. He is literally a living legend.

Under the old regime, Qaradawi was banned from the country. He is now 84 years old--two years older than the fallen President Husni Mubarak--but he is tremendously energetic and clear-minded.

It was Qaradawi who, in critiquing Usama bin Ladin and al-Qaida, argued that Islamists should always participate in elections because they would, he claims, invariably win them. Hamas and Hizballah have shown that he was right on that point.

can a judge have actually said this?  read on.

Well now, this is a theory I’ve never run across before. But leave it to a lawyer’s brain to split the hairs.

So then .. if you sexuality assault a child but still like older women as well, you are not strictly speaking a pedophile. Huh?  Do you read it this way as well?
I wonder if somehow something got lost in translation because even in this upside down ludicrous world, that does not make any sense.
See G of V for more on the subject.
Oh, and here’s a thought someone else raised in conversation a while ago.

In the days of Mohamed, and not just him, would child sex have been the norm? And not just with islamics. Since life ended fairly early, would it not have begun early as well?  I never thought about that before someone asked it.

Press Release on the Scandalous Judgment Against Elisabeth Sabaditsch-Wolff

Gemmingen, February 15, 2011

On February 15, 2011, Elisabeth Sabaditsch-Wolff was sentenced to a fine of €480 for “denigration of religious doctrines” by Judge Bettina Neubauer in the Vienna Regional Court. She was acquitted of the original charge of ethnic incitement.

The court based “denigration of religious doctrines” on the fact that Elisabeth Sabaditsch-Wolff had characterized Mohammed as “pedophiliac” because — according to Islamic legend — he had sex with nine year-old Aisha. In the court’s view, this was “denigrating” because Mohammed did not have sex exclusively with children but also with grown women, and stayed with Aisha until his death when she was eighteen years old. So he was not inclined to pedophilia.

It might be interesting to see whether this scandalous judicial interpretation could persist in regard to convicted child molesters in Austria. It is known that many of these child molesters were fathers of families at the time. This could therefore no longer legally be called “pedophilia.”

Elisabeth’s statement after the trial is clear: “Today is a sad day for my young daughter and for all other young girls.”

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
