Damascus? Don’t Ask Us!
Will the last one out please turn off the lights and lock the door?
Not a good sign boys and girls.
The United States has whisked its remaining diplomats out of Syria and suspended operations at its embassy in Damascus as violence there continues to increase, U.S. officials told ABC News. The skeletal staff, including Ambassador Robert Ford, departed quietly despite in some cases being denied exit visas by Syrian authorities, the officials said.
“The recent surge in violence, including bombings in Damascus on Dec. 23 and Jan. 6, has raised serious concerns that our Embassy is not sufficiently protected from armed attack,” State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said today. “We, along with several other diplomatic missions, conveyed our security concerns to the Syrian government but the regime failed to respond adequately.”
Today’s move comes after the Obama administration says its requests to Syrian authorities for increased security around the American embassy and its diplomats fell on deaf ears. The embassy is situated on a busy intersection in Damascus and officials say they feared al Qaeda elements, which are believed to be behind a string of car bombs in the Syrian capital, could target the Americans next. They had requested that the street the embassy is on be closed, but nothing was done.
The embassy had already been targeted by a pro-Assad mob last July after Ambassador Ford defied restrictions on his travel outside the capital and visited the restive city of Hama. Some in the crowd scaled the outer walls of the embassy and defaced the exterior, including the American flag, before being chased away by embassy guards.
The U.S. embassy, like other diplomatic facilities there, is guarded by Syrian security forces. U.S. officials say they were slow to respond and accused the government of sponsoring the protest.
The Syrian government’s crackdown on the movement to oust President Assad has become increasingly bloody in recent months. The United Nations stopped counting the dead late last month, saying it was too hard to keep up with and verify the body counts. At the time it placed the death toll at more than 5,400. Since then there have been reports of hundreds more killed.
Opposition elements have also stepped up efforts to fight back, raising fears that the once peaceful movement could evolve into a civil war.

“could evolve into a civil war”?? If you make a bit of effort to look just a little beneath the headlines it is pretty obvious that it already is a civil war. Or at least a religious one.
Against Syrian anger, Assad’s Alawite Muslim sect feels fear
Opposition leaders, some of whom have taken up arms in an increasingly violent confrontation that has killed more than 5,000 people in 11 months, mostly dismiss suggestions the revolt is destined to divide Syrians along ethnic and religious lines. But millions are incensed by the killing, arrests and torture unleashed last year by the Alawite-led authorities against demonstrators, including women and children, who confronted them in mainly Sunni cities like Deraa.
In a country which has seen refugees stream in from the sectarian blood-letting in Iraq in recent years, and where Assad and his late father are widely perceived by much of the 75-percent Sunni majority to have heavily favoured the once scorned Alawites, the language of religious hatred is growing louder. Stories of reciprocal atrocity are gaining currency.
For the Alawites, who identify their faith as a variant of the Shi’ite Islam practised in Iran, long a close ally of Assad, the rise in the ranks of the opposition of the Sunni Islamist movement the Muslim Brotherhood and other conservative Sunnis who accuse Alawites of heresy is a particular cause of anxiety.
And we all know just how tolerant and forgiving Islam can be, right? As in, Not One Jot. Not Ever.
If you’re having trouble keeping the players straight without a scorecard, just know that the mad mullahs in Iran are supporting Assad and his sect, while Al Qaeda is supporting the Sunni sect. Isn’t that great? Two terrorist groups at odds with other in somebody else’s country. I’m certain that will have a peaceful resolution, right? Once again it looks like the seeds planted in the Arab Spring are only growing a crop of thistles.
Communal support for Assad invokes not only the fear of reprisal, but the historic marginalisation of Alawites from the centuries of Sunni Ottoman rule down to the emergence of Assad’s father, Hafez al-Assad. He took power in 1970 and died in 2000.
Before the Assads, Alawites say, they were treated routinely as second-class citizens, discriminated against and deprived of holding senior posts in the government.
Looks to me like they hate each other just as much as they hate us. Jizzlam comes in several distasteful varieties, and it seems that each of those has a few variations within it. And nobody gets along, and they all hate each other, and will all jump at the chance to kill each other off.
“So before I was nine I had learned the basic canon of Arab life.” says Ishmael, “It was me against my brother; me and my brother against our father; my family against my cousins and the clan; the clan against the tribe; and the tribe against the world. And all of us against the infidel. “
Leon Uris, The Haj
PS - at first I thought it was a bit odd to name a religious sect after a fish. Just a little mental dyslexia there. “Alawhite” not ”Alewife”. Guess that one was a red herring.
PPS - Oh, and should [when] the long knives come out and Assad topple and the ethnic cleansing begin, guess who will be taking in the wretched refuse refugees, even though they are their mortal enemies with whom a state of war still exists? Israel of course!
Israel is making preparations to house refugees from Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s minority Alawite sect should his government fall, Israel’s military chief told a parliamentary committee today.
“On the day that the regime falls, it is expected to result in a blow to the Alawite sect. We are preparing to take in Alawite refugees on the Golan Heights,” a committee spokesman quoted Lieutenant-General Benny Gantz as saying.
Assad has faced 10 months of popular revolt in which more than 5,000 people have been killed, according to United Nations figures. Israeli officials have said they do not expect his government to last more than a few months.
How do you say “brain fart” in Hebrew??

Pity, No Rope In Canada
A jury on Sunday found three members of an Afghan family guilty of killing three teenage sisters and another woman in what the judge described as “cold-blooded, shameful murders” resulting from a “twisted concept of honor,” ending a case that shocked and riveted Canadians.
Prosecutors said the defendants allegedly killed the three teenage sisters because they dishonored the family by defying its disciplinarian rules on dress, dating, socializing and using the Internet.
The jury took 15 hours to find Mohammad Shafia, 58; his wife Tooba Yahya, 42; and their son Hamed, 21, each guilty of four counts of first-degree murder. First-degree murder carries an automatic life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years.
After the verdict was read, the three defendants again declared their innocence in the killings of sisters Zainab, 19, Sahar 17, and Geeti, 13, as well as Rona Amir Mohammad, 52, Shafia’s childless first wife in a polygamous marriage.
Their bodies were found June 30, 2009, in a car submerged in a canal in Kingston, Ontario, where the family had stopped for the night on their way home to Montreal from Niagara Falls, Ontario.
The prosecution alleged it was a case of premeditated murder, staged to look like an accident after it was carried out. Prosecutors said the defendants drowned their victims elsewhere on the site, placed their bodies in the car and pushed it into the canal.
Ontario Superior Court Judge Robert Maranger said the evidence clearly supported the conviction.
“It is difficult to conceive of a more heinous, more despicable, more honorless crime,” Maranger said. “The apparent reason behind these cold-blooded, shameful murders was that the four completely innocent victims offended your completely twisted concept of honor ... that has absolutely no place in any civilized society.”
The prosecution painted a picture of a household controlled by a domineering Shafia, with Hamed keeping his sisters in line and doling out discipline when his father was away on frequent business trips to Dubai.
The months leading up to the deaths were not happy ones in the Shafia household, according to evidence presented at trial. Zainab, the oldest daughter, was forbidden to attend school for a year because she had a young Pakistani-Canadian boyfriend, and she fled to a shelter, terrified of her father, the court was told.
The prosecution said her parents found condoms in Sahar’s room as well as photos of her wearing short skirts and hugging her Christian boyfriend, a relationship she had kept secret. Geeti was becoming almost impossible to control: skipping school, failing classes, being sent home for wearing revealing clothes and stealing, while declaring to authority figures that she wanted to be placed in foster care, according to the prosecution.
Shafia’s first wife wrote in a diary that her husband beat her and “made life a torture,” while his second wife called her a servant.
The prosecution presented wire taps and mobile phone records from the Shafia family in court to support their honor killing allegation. The wiretaps, which capture Shafia spewing vitriol about his dead daughters, calling them treacherous and whores and invoking the devil to defecate on their graves, were a focal point of the trial.
“There can be no betrayal, no treachery, no violation more than this,” Shafia said on one recording. “Even if they hoist me up onto the gallows ... nothing is more dear to me than my honor.”
Hold on, wait a second ... Ontario Child Protective Services had the house wired, and were collecting evidence that these girls were in a dangerous, abusive situation, and did nothing to stop it??? What the flickity flock, eh? It never ceases to amaze me when I hear yet another story about government child welfare folks who step in when they shouldn’t, and don’t when they should have. Bass-ackwards, all the time. Given those recorded rants, how could they NOT act? These girls should be alive today; I’d say the social services people share partly in the blame. If they suspend kids from school for making finger guns and saying “kapow kapow” at recess, then these folks should also serve time in jail.
Meanwhile, at CNN, the same story is tilted to focus on the tale that the convicted are planning to appeal. Hmm, that kind of shows you where their sympathies lie, doesn’t it? Dhimmi corksnockers. Oooh, scare quotes too, just to emphasize that CNN feels that this is a miscarriage of justice?
Family plans to appeal convictions in ‘honor murders’
Kingston, Ontario (CNN)—Three members of an Afghan immigrant family, who were found guilty of murder in what the judge called “a completely twisted concept of honor,” intend to appeal their convictions.
...
In taking the stand, Shafia swore to tell the truth on the Quran and he again invoked the holy book to say Islam does not condone killing people to preserve a family’s honor.
...
Shafia and his lawyers tried to explain that his shocking words are traditional expressions in Dari that should not be translated literally. But the jury also heard from an expert witness on honor murders—a term CNN is using in the interest of clarity rather than the more common “honor killings” because the latter phrase does not properly describe the alleged crime.
The cultural battle lines are drawn, and CNN is not on our side. Like you didn’t already know that.

Yeah Right
Rapist drug dealer murderer merely had a grudge against society, so he attacked crowds of Christmas shoppers. With military explosives and machine guns. Nothing to see here, move along.
The gunman, named as Nordine Amrani, 33, began his attack near a bus stop at Place Saint Lambert, a central shopping area and the site of the city’s annual Christmas market and its main courthouse.
He opened fire and threw explosives on a city centre square which was hosting a Christmas market. He ended by shooting himself in the head with a handgun, witnesses said.
“The act which happened here in Liege is horrible, there are no words to describe the tragedy. We think of the innocent victims, innocent victims, of their families and friends. We also think of all the people who were present at the scene, and more generally of the people of Liege. All the country is sharing in the pain of the families affected,” The Prime Minister said.
“According to the information we have this is an isolated act, not a terrorist act, or an attack. The shock that the population feels is understandable and we share it,” he said.
They stressed that Amrani had no known links to terrorism or any history of mental illness or violent crime, but it did emerge that he was released on parole last year from a 58-month sentence for possessing a cache of weapons and 2,800 cannabis plants.
Belgian gunman Nordine Amrani launched his attack on Christmas shopping crowds in Leige’s busy Place Saint Lambert because he knew that he was going to be sent back to prison and had a “grudge against society”, his lawyers said today.
It emerged early this morning that Amrani, 33, killed a 45-year old woman before carrying out his grenade and assault rifle attack that killed three people in Liege, including a 17-month old baby boy.
The Belgian, of Moroccan origin, was on parole and had been summoned to police, where he feared being arrested and being returned to prison because his car number plate had been seen at the scene of an “immoral act”.
With previous convictions and jail terms for possession of arms, he would have known that the police would have raided his properties where he had a new stash of heavy weapons, including grenades and assault rifles.
The police source said Amrani’s rucksack was ‘full of grenades’, with many remaining unused after he pulled the pins out of just three.
The source said Amrani, who came from a North African immigrant background, also had convictions for drug dealing, handling stolen goods and sex abuse.
‘Amrani was well-known to us, but was never linked to any terrorist group,’ said the source.
And don’t you just adore this leading line from the BBC -
Nordine Amrani was known to Belgian police as a gun enthusiast long before the day he killed at least four people and himself, wounding more than 120.
He had previously been convicted for drug dealing and illegal arms possession, as well as for holding stolen goods and other crimes, said Daniele Reynders, the public prosecutor for Liege.
All told, he had racked up around 20 brushes with Belgian law enforcement, an official source told AFP.
Yeah, let’s all thank God that this wasn’t any kind of indication that he had mental problems or anything. All us sane folks have a bomb lab in the garage, don’t we?
Lot’s of papers and blogs are running his picture now that it’s been released. Here’s the only picture of him that he deserves:
Burn in Hell, asshole.
PS - Guess those super effective gun control laws don’t work in wonderful Europe either. Not only did this scumbag get his hands on firearms, he got hold of fully automatic ones, and grenades. Grenades are classified as WMDs in the USA, therefore this murder spree is an act of terrorism. Call it Sudden Jihad Syndrome, call it just another criminal loser who just happens to be of pizzlamic descent who just happens to hate the world who just happens to go on a killing spree. During the major Christian holiday season. Pure coincidence. He was just a nihilist trying to commit suicide, who was the worstest shot evah. Yeah, that’s it. And then give props to the Belgie’s criminal justice system ... more than 20 convictions, drugs, guns, BOMBS, rapes, yet here he was, out on the street. Way to go!

Chop Chop
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) — Saudi authorities have executed a woman convicted of practicing magic and sorcery.
The Saudi Interior Ministry says in a statement the execution took place Monday, but gave no details on the woman’s crime.
The London-based al-Hayat daily, however, quoted Abdullah al-Mohsen, chief of the religious police who arrested the woman, as saying she had tricked people into thinking she could treat illnesses, charging them $800 per session.
The paper said a female investigator followed up, and the woman was arrested in April, 2009, and later convicted in a Saudi court.
It did not give the woman’s name, but said she was in her 60s.
The execution brings the total to 76 this year in Saudi Arabia, according to an Associated Press count. At least three have been women.
For all you America haters out there, especially you euro-peons always going on about our guns and our death penalty, Saudi Arabia has executed more than double the number of criminals this year than we have. Actually, it’s closer to 2.5 times as many ... and the USA has more than 11 times the population. Stick that in your hookah and smoke it.
Also, I’m pretty sure we haven’t executed a woman for witchcraft in more than 370 years. So there.

More Jailbird Jihadis
Lather, rinse, repeat: it seems like a never ending cycle. Has anyone taken a look at the number of American jihadis who converted to jizzlam while in jail? Or should we focus even more sharply and also see how many of them are black? Seems to be mighty commonplace to me. Of course, that would be profiling, wouldn’t it? And racist! Yeah, and the sin would be even worse because it would turn out to be >95% accurate. Bad Drew. Bad bad bad. Raaaaaaacist!

[12/8/2011] One-half of a duo charged with planning a terrorist attack on a Seattle military installation pleaded guilty to federal charges Thursday.
Walli Mujahidh’s guilty plea to charges, including conspiracy to murder officers and agents of the United States and conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction, will help him avoid a life sentence.
Mujahidh, 32, and Abu Khalid Abdul-Latif were charged with plotting to use assault rifles to attack the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) on Seattle’s East Marginal Way.
A sting operation conducted by the Joint Terrorism Task Force foiled the plot in June.
[06/24/2011] The defendants initially planned an attack on Joint Base Lewis-McChord, but later changed targets. The defendants intended to carry out their attack with both grenades and assault rifles.
Law enforcement began monitoring Abdul-Latif (aka Joseph Anthony Davis) and Mujahidh (aka Frederick Domingue, Jr.) on June 6, after being tipped off by a confidential source.
The informant, who has a criminal record, was approached by Abdul-Latif as a recruit to join the plot and supply weapons to the conspirators, according to charging papers.
[12/08/2011] The pair is charged with conspiracy to murder officers and employees of the United States, conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction, and possession of firearms in furtherance of crimes of violence. Abdul-Latif is also charged with two counts of illegal possession of firearms.
Abdul-Latif was scheduled to face trial next May.
Prosecutors did not divulge how the suspects became acquainted, though Mujahidh formerly lived in Seattle. He was convicted in municipal court of violating a domestic violence protection order stemming from a 2007 incident.
Mujahidh voluntarily spoke with investigators after the arrests and confessed, according to the federal complaint against them. The pair initially planned an attack on Joint Base Lewis-McChord, but later shifted to what they considered an easier target, the complaint said.
Abdul-Latif, 33, has a criminal record and a troubled family past, but allegations that he plotted a terrorist attack surprised those who knew him.H

When Even Muslims Go Too Far

An Islamic cleric living in Europe reportedly has warned Muslim women not to get too close to bananas, cucumbers or other produce—to avoid having “sexual thoughts.”
The unnamed cleric, whose directive was featured in an article in el-Senousa, a religious publication, purportedly said that if women wanted to eat these foods, a third party—preferably a male related to them, such as their father or husband—should cut the items into small pieces before serving, the Egyptian website Bikya Masr reported.
Carrots and zucchini also were added to the alleged cleric’s list of forbidden foods for women.
News of the statement quickly spread online, leaving many liberal Muslims embarrassed and angry, evoking a flurry of mockery in online forums.
“Many of the commentators are Muslims themselves, who have expressed their anger against the cleric for making Islamic religious practices appear unreasonable,” The International Business Times reported.
BikyaMasr.com said the cleric, identified only as a sheikh, was asked in the interview how to “control” women when they are shopping for groceries, and whether holding these items at the market would be bad, to which he replied that the matter was between them and God.
It took this for them to wake up to the unreasonable aspects of pizzlam? Tad bit slow, doncha think? About 1300 years slow, I’d say.
Yet they don’t seem to have any outrage that the question arose during the interview about how to control women while they’re shopping. (Go on, say it, I know you want to!) And worries about fondling the veggies; that’s an honest concern, right?
Hey muzzies, sometimes a cucumber is just a cucumber.
Personally, I think they ought to be more concerned about the glee she shows in the kitchen whacking these vegetables into little pieces. I guess perhaps they are, which is why they gave that duty to the men ... which is either rather gay, or symbolic of something. Or both. Chop chop.

Old News Is New News, Again
Gee, didn’t the New Digital Media figure this out in excruciating detail more than a year and a half ago?
Yeah, and water can’t cure dehydration. Numbnuts.
Sen. Susan Collins on Wednesday blasted the Defense Department for classifying the Fort Hood massacre as workplace violence and suggested political correctness is being placed above the security of the nation’s Armed Forces at home.
During a joint session of the Senate and House Homeland Security Committee on Wednesday, the Maine Republican referenced a letter from the Defense Department depicting the Fort Hood shootings as workplace violence. She criticized the Obama administration for failing to identify the threat as radical Islam.
Thirteen people were killed and dozens more wounded at Fort Hood in 2009, and the number of alleged plots targeting the military has grown significantly since then. Lawmakers said there have been 33 plots against the U.S. military since Sept. 11, 2001, and 70 percent of those threats have been since mid-2009. Major Nidal Hasan, a former Army psychiatrist, who is being held for the attacks, allegedly was inspired by radical U.S.-born cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, who was killed in a U.S. drone strike in Yemen in late September. The two men exchanged as many as 20 emails, according to U.S. officials, and Awlaki declared Hasan a hero.
Pretty damn pathetic if you ask me. I think that “workplace violence” label falls under the “nice try asswipe” and “you can fool some of the people NONE of the time” categories. It wasn’t “human-caused disaster” either, or whatever the proper pansy-ass euphemism is. It was straight up terrorism executed by a jihadist who used the ninny-britches military’s kowtowing to political correctness to his advantage to work his evil. Take the bastard out and shoot him. And don’t call it anything else. Period. Next?

A New Twist On The Same Old Sickness
It ain’t just allah anymore!
Saudi Arabia to Give Australian 500 Lashes, Jail for Blasphemy
Insulting the friends of the founder of Islam earned an Australian national 500 lashes and a year in jail in Saudi Arabia last month.
Mansor Almaribe, a resident of southern Victoria state, was arrested by religious police on November 14 in Medina while participating in the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca known as the hajj. His eldest son Jamal told The Melbourne Age newspaper that Almaribe was reading and praying in a group at the time.
Family members told Australian media that Saudi officials accused the 45-year-old of insulting companions of Islam’s Prophet Muhammed; blasphemy is considered a serious offense in Saudi Arabia, which is governed under Shari’a (Islamic) law.
No information is available about exactly how or when he insulted them, or even which companions of Muhammed he allegedly had insulted.
He was convicted Tuesday and sentenced to two years in prison and 500 lashes. The court later reduced the sentence to “only” one year in jail, in the presence of an Australian consular official who attended the proceedings.
...
A sentence of 500 lashes is considered equivalent to a death sentence.
Approximately
300,000 Muslims now live in Australia299,999 Muslims now live in Australia [Drew: FIFY!], and there are over 100 mosques
Makes me wonder just how “insulting” his statements actually were, given that the guy had come halfway around the world to take part in the grandest spectacle of the “faith”. Gosh, couldn’t he have gone before the judge and pleaded that he’d been drinking, and wasn’t used to it? That should’ve got him off, right?
Good thing he didn’t insult the old pedophile’s camel; they would have killed him on the spot.
Number 713,810,281 on the list of pisslamic love and tolerance incidents.

Saudi women with attractive eyes may be forced to cover even them.
Hey .. have you folks seen the latest demand the Saudis, well some at least, are making of their women?
You’d think the rop had gone about as far as it could in their control of women. Apparently not as some want more restrictions. Not the women of course.
Feel sorry for them.
Look at this.
Saudi women with attractive eyes may be forced to cover even them up, if resolution is passed
Islamic state fears effect of ‘tempting’ eyes on men
Says it ‘has the right’ to issue repressive edict
Women must already cover their hair and wear full-length black cloak
By LEON WATSON
Women with attractive eyes may be forced to cover them up under Saudi Arabia’s latest repressive measure, it was revealed today.
The ultra-conservative Islamic state has said it has the right to stop women revealing ‘tempting’ eyes in public.
A spokesperson for Saudi Arabia’s Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, Sheikh Motlab al Nabet, said a proposal to enshrine the measure in law has been tabled.
Women in Saudi Arabia already have to wear a long black cloak, called an abaya, cover their hair and, in some regions, conceal their faces while in public.
If they do not, they face punishments including fines and public floggings.
They are also banned from driving by religious edict and cannot travel without authorisation from their male guardians.
In September, a Saudi women sentenced to 10 lashes for defying the driving ban was only spared when King Abdullah stepped in to stop the public flogging.
Also in September, the king announced that women would be given the right to vote for the first time and run in the country’s 2015 local elections.
The CPVPV, which employs around 3,500 religious police, has repeatedly been accused of human rights violations.
Founded in 1940, its function is to ensure Islamic laws are not broken in public in Saudi Arabia.
In 2002 the committee refused to allow female students out of a burning school in Mecca because they were not wearing the correct head covering.
The decision contributed to the toll of 15 people who were killed in the fire.

Three Wives? Two Husbands? Move To Canada, Quick!
This is a very quick follow up to Peiper’s post below on the ‘honor killings’ in Canada. And a HUGE indication of cultural decline.
January 4, 2011
A court hearing challenging Canada’s anti-polygamy law on religious freedom grounds resumes Wednesday in British Columbia and will eventually include testimony from men and women who are living in multiple-partner marriages.
The hearing will not immediately change the status quo, as British Columbia Supreme Court Chief Justice Robert Bauman’s ruling will not bind any courts.
But his ruling will address questions about whether polygamy is a criminal activity under Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and, if it is illegal, under what circumstances. Observers predict that if Justice Bauman’s ruling is appealed, the issue could end up before the Supreme Court of Canada, which could make a binding ruling about polygamy.
The legal hearing revolves around the British Columbia community of Bountiful. Formed in 1946, its 400 or so members belong to a breakaway Mormon sect that permits men to have multiple wives.
The challengers of Canada’s anti-polygamy law say that the nation’s 1982 Charter of Rights and Freedoms gives people the right to practice “plural marriage.”
For believers in the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, “celestial marriage” — i.e., plural marriage — “is an essential FLDS religious principle,” and “unless the faithful participate in it, they cannot enter into the fullness of glory in the kingdom of heaven in the afterlife,” William John Walsh, an expert on FLDS, said in an affidavit to the court.
The FLDS long ago split from the mainstream Mormon Church, which formerly practiced polygamy but ceased the practice in 1890 and condemns the FLDS as heretical.
People who practice Islam, Wicca and other religions also are adversely affected by the anti-polygamy law, Vancouver lawyers George K. Macintosh, Ludmila B. Herbst and Tim Dickson said in a brief to the court.
November 8, 2011
Landmark polygamy ruling expected in two weeks
VANCOUVER — The British Columbia Supreme Court is expected to release its long-awaited ruling in a polygamy case on Nov. 23. In April, after 42 days of hearing evidence about whether or not Canada’s polygamy law is constitutional, Chief Justice Robert Bauman reserved judgment. Bauman’s ruling will be posted on the B.C. Supreme Court website, according to information released by court officials Tuesday.
A lockup for reporters is being organized just prior to the release of the ruling.
Lawyers for the governments of Canada and B.C. called witnesses to testify to the harm caused by polygamy. They argued that the practice puts women and children at sufficient risk to justify limiting religious freedoms.
A lawyer appointed by the court marshalled the groups that say the law is over-broad and unconstitutional and should be struck down. Those groups included the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and the B.C. Civil Liberties Association.
Wiki data:
Canada: It is illegal by Section 293 of the Criminal Code of Canada. Bigamy is banned by Section 290. However, the law banning polygamy is not enforced by the government. As of January 2009, no person has been prosecuted in over sixty years. A reference case is currently under way in the Supreme Court of British Columbia challenging the constitutionality of this law.
November 6, 2011: An opinion
There isn’t a shred of evidence that polygamy benefits women. Even the UN, often a laughingstock of blind ideologues, has declared that polygamy violates women’s equality rights. Still, that hasn’t stopped academics (who should know better) from suggesting that polygamy be decriminalized.
The latest educator to jump on the decriminalization bandwagon is U of A poli-sci professor Lois Harder. In a recent study written for the Vanier Institute of the Family, Harder wonders if women in polygamous families might be better off if polygamy wasn’t a crime.
“Decriminalizing polygamy would not entail expanding the definition of marriage to include polygamous marriages,” she wrote. “Rather, it would provide a firmer foundation from which to protect women and children in polygamous relationships from exploitation.”
Yeah, right. Remove polygamy from the Criminal Code and all those young girls and women who’ve been brainwashed by the men in Bountiful, B.C., and other polygamous communities will shake off the shackles of exploitation and go to university to become doctors, lawyers and, oh, poli-sci profs.
...
It’s incredibly naive to believe that polygamy can exist without the exploitation of women. The females in these dysfunctional relationships may not think they’re being taken advantage of. They may, in fact, insist they freely chose such a lifestyle. After all, what woman wouldn’t want to get married in her mid-teens to someone old enough to be her father or grandfather, drop out of school, have a baby every year and share her husband with a bunch of sister-wives? Isn’t that every woman’s dream?
...
Polygamy is simply incompatible with equality and basic human dignity. It’s soul-destroying and merely feeds the deranged dictates of pathological egotists.
Mohammad Shafia’s house rules
At the Shafias’, court hears, men were the law, women property and teen behavior worthy of execution
On paper, Mohammad Shafia was the ideal immigrant, a wealthy, self-made businessman eager to inject his dollars into the Canadian economy. An Afghan who made his fortune in Dubai real estate, Shafia wasted little time setting up shop in his adopted country. In 2008, a year after arriving in Montreal, he purchased a $2-million strip mall in Laval—with a cash down payment of $1.6 million. He launched a company that imported and distributed clothing, household goods and construction material. And he chose the posh suburb of Brossard to build a sprawling mansion with plenty of room for all 10 members of his polygamous clan: himself, two wives and seven children.
The new house was still under construction on June 30, 2009, when three of the Shafia girls—Zainab, 19, Sahar, 17, and Geeti, 13—were discovered at the bottom of the Rideau Canal, floating inside a sunken black Nissan that also contained the lifeless body of their “stepmother,” Shafia’s first wife, Rona Amir Mohammad. The four passengers appeared, at first glance, to be the victims of a late-night joyride gone horribly wrong. Within weeks, however, detectives in Kingston, Ont., offered a far more chilling version of events, laying first-degree-murder charges against a trio of suspects: Mohammad Shafia, the dead girls’ father; Tooba Yahya, their mother; and Hamed Shafia, their brother.
Today, more than two years later, the Shafia patriarch sleeps in a tiny cell with his eldest son. His wife—the one that’s still breathing—is locked in a separate prison.
Canada long ago fell off the left edge of the earth as far as I’m concerned, and has become a socialist cesspool. I would be amazed if the Canadian Supreme Court upheld the existing law, and I’d be even more amazed if they demanded that it actually be enforced. Selective enforcement of laws is one of the ways that a socialist tyranny hides behind a facade of democracy - just ask Obama and Holder. I fully expect the crazy Canucks to rule that polygamy is perfectly fine and dandy. And that any animal over 40lbs is capable of unspoken consent to a human sexual interaction.
The West is going straight to hell.

Aww Gee, Too Bad
Muslims in Switzerland are responding with shock and outrage after a pig carcass and severed swine heads were discovered buried at the site of a proposed mosque.
Police in the town of Grenchen uncovered the pigs Friday after they received an anonymous message claiming that someone had buried the body parts and spilled 120 liters of blood from the animals in an effort to desecrate the ground to halt the construction of the mosque.
Pork and pork byproducts are haram, or forbidden, in Islam.
The unsigned flier, written in German, says “This operation was done (conducted) to protest against the growing expansion of Islam in Switzerland,” and says that a similar desecration in Spain earlier halted another mosque construction project.
The police chief says that veterinary health officials have been called in to find if pig’s blood has in fact been spilled, and that charges may be filed over illegal dumping of animal parts in addition to other potential criminal charges.
But for Muslims in Switzerland, it’s just the latest sign that they are being victimized by some in the far right.
Abdel Azziz Qaasim Illi, spokesman for Switzerland’s Central Islamic Council said the deed “crossed a line” that had already been pushed against Muslims since a popular referendum in 2009 banned the construction of new minarets.
“Since the ban on minarets there’s been an increase in Islamophobia and Islamophobic events, so it was not really surprising” said Illi. “But it is an escalation in Switzerland because this is a peaceful country where Christians and Muslims have all been living together… and we are a bit afraid this may increase.”
There are an estimated 500,000 Muslims in Switzerland, out of a population of more than 7 million says Illi, who admitted that the population is rising but that most Swiss Muslims were immigrants from Albania and elsewhere in the Balkans, where there is a tradition of moderate Islam.
Switzerland; land of conservative, buttoned down, responsible white people. Heidi. Cowbells. Probably mostly Lutherans if I had to take a guess. Now so overrun with muzzy immigrants from the ghetto states of south east Europe, to the extent that 1 in 14 in their tiny country is a bomb throwing pedophile worshiper. And anyone who can remember the Balkan Wars of 20 years ago will scoff at that “tradition of moderate Islam” garbage. Remember “ethnic cleansing”? Serbia? Croatia? Sarajevo?

Yee Ha For Texans

MASON, Texas—It was a message intended to bring in some extra business. A radio ad for a concealed handgun class at Keller’s Riverside Store in Mason, located in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, is causing controversy.
“We will attempt to teach you all the necessary information you need to obtain your C.H.L.,” the ad stated. Forty-five seconds in, the advertisement added a disclaimer.
Ad for gun training bars Muslims and Obama voters
A radio ad for a handgun training class that bars Muslims and Obama voters has sparked an investigation in Texas.
“We will attempt to teach you all the necessary information you need to obtain your [Concealed Handgun License],” the ad says. Then towards the end, it adds: “If you are a socialist liberal and/or voted for the current campaigner in chief, please do not take this class. You have already proven that you cannot make a knowledgeable and prudent decision under the law.”
And then: “If you are a non-Christian Arab or Muslim, I will not teach you the class with no shame; I am Crockett Keller, thank you, and God bless America.”
The ad ran for six days on KHLB, Mason’s local station. It’s also been heard tens of thousands of times on Youtube.
Keller, 65, has said in media interviews that he just regards the message is just common sense. “The fact is, if you are a devout Muslim, then you cannot be a true American,” he told local news station KVUE, while fielding calls congratulating him for his stance. “Why should I arm these people to kill me? That’s suicide.”
“I call it exercising my right to choose who I instruct in how to use a dangerous weapon,” he added.
But the state of Texas may disagree. The Department of Public Safety said in a statement that certified instructors of handgun training are required to comply with all applicable state and federal laws, and added: “Conduct by an instructor that denied service to individuals on the basis of race, ethnicity or religion would place that instructor’s certification by the Department at risk of suspension or revocation.” The department has said it has begun an investigation.
It seems unlikely that Keller will back down, though. “I’m not going to do it,” he told the local news. “I will give up my license to teach before I will teach them,” he said, referring to Obama voters and Muslims.

Gee What A Surprise
The transitional government leader Mustafa Abdul-Jalil called on Libyans to show “patience, honesty and tolerance” and eschew hatred as they embark on rebuilding the country at the end of an 8-month civil war.
Abdul-Jalil set out a vision for the post-Qaddafi future with an Islamist tint, saying that Islamic Sharia law would be the “basic source” of legislation in the country and that existing laws that contradict the teachings of Islam would be nullified.
In a gesture that showed his own piety, he urged Libyans not to express their joy by firing in the air, but rather to chant “Allahu Akbar,” or God is Great. He then stepped aside and knelt to offer a brief prayer of thanks.
“After four decades of brutal dictatorship and eight months of deadly conflict, the Libyan people can now celebrate their freedom and the beginning of a new era of promise,” Obama said in a statement.
Yes indeed. The promise of going from one form of slavery immediately into another form of slavery. And just how much of a “basic source” do you really think Sharia will be, if the very first thing that the interim government does is get rid of every single law that is non-Sharia? As in “basic” equals “total”.
And another country full of the uneducated and the unwashed gets thrown under the goat cart. I’d like to say “gets thrown under the bus” but a bus is 1,200 years too advanced for them. So we’ll have yet another nation that is watering the seeds of the Caliphate. It’s going to happen in Tunisia to the west, and it’s happening to the east in this very Egypt. Hell, they can’t even wait for elections there, and are busy killing Christians and burning churches left and right. Honesty, tolerance, and eschewing hatred. Riiiiight.
(AP) TUNIS, Tunisia — As the land that launched the Arab Spring heads into historic elections next week, all eyes are on the long-repressed Islamists — and whether a big victory for them will irrevocably change this North African nation and inspire similar conservative movements around the region.
Many fear that despite vows to uphold democracy, Tunisia’s Islamist Ennahda Party is bent on imposing a theocracy that would roll back hard-won secularism and women’s rights. Others see an opportunity to bring a moderate form of political Islam into the Arab world — one styled after the successful ruling party in thriving Turkey.
The Ennahda Party was brutally crushed by overthrown dictator Ben Ali in the 1990s, a policy tacitly approved by Western powers wary of militant Islam. Now, in the Oct. 23 election, it is set to become the largest party in the assembly that will write the nation’s new constitution — largely because it is the best-organized force in the country.
Unlike many Islamist groups in the region, Ennahda has explicitly pledged to champion democratic values and women’s rights, but its secular critics warn the party has a secret agenda to impose hardline Islam.
These fears have been inflamed by the appearance of new ultraconservative groups known as Salafists that have attacked movie theaters and TV stations for showing material they say denigrates Islam.
The pro-democracy Egyptian revolution is heading towards producing results contrary to the expectation of those who spearheaded it.
The Islamist parties now stand a good chance to win an absolute majority in the parliamentary elections in November, and also contest successfully the presidential election. This outcome would be alarming for secularist pro-democracy elements and many regional and international actors, Israel and the US in particular, but it would need to be embraced as part and parcel of process of Egypt’s democratisation journey.
According to an Aljazeera public opinion survey, released on July 7, 2011, nearly 50 per cent of those polled indicated first preference for the Muslim Brotherhood, represented by the Freedom and Justice Party. Another 27 per cent expressed support for the Salafist cluster or what is now called Nour Party. Although there are some ideological and operational differences between the two parties, both are nonetheless Islamist, advocating political Islam as the framework for Egypt’s transformation.
With Libya going over, Egypt pretty much gone, Sudan, Eritrea, and Somalia already gone, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Oman solidly islamic and their leaders under intense pressure ... that’s an area far larger than the lower 48 of the USA. Add in Iran, soon to be Iraq, and of course the madhouses of Syria, “Palestine”, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, et al ... it’s a mess. Do you really think Algeria will remain aloof? Morocco? These countries may not instantly give up their identity to be part of a new empire, but if they all go (or remain) Sharia, there isn’t a whole lot of difference. Their populations are already nearly 100% muslim. All they need is one little spark to ignite the fires of jihad. The sand lands will become a giant green stain on the world. Again. Hell, they already are, but I’m talking about their being a cohesive one. Glenn Beck was right.
Arab Spring my ass. Obama, what have you done?
The only silver lining I can see in this cloud is that the izzies hate each other even more than they hate everyone else, so they won’t go quietly into that good night. They’ll go screaming and bleeding, and the west will just sit and watch.
Oh, and extra credit to you if you got my “this very Egypt” reference; you’ve found another of my favorite authors.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.
- Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
- Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
- Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
- Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
