Navy: So Far So Good

New  Heavy Cruiser  Destroyer Launched

$4 Billion Ship Actually Floats

image

Without any fanfare or ceremony, new super destroyer USS Zumwalt takes to the water, observed by 2 guys in a canoe.

The USS Zumwalt, a massive 610-foot modern-day destroyer with an advanced rocket system, launched into the water off a Maine dock on Monday, in a surprisingly quiet ceremony, given the vessel’s record-breaking size and unusual shape.

It’s the largest destroyer ever built for the U.S. Navy, and it’s notable for its angular profile, The Daily Mail reported.

The ship was set for a huge fanfare launch earlier this month. But plans were scaled back, due to the government shutdown.

On Monday, it hit the water for the first time in the Kennebec River off Maine.

Bath Iron Works craftsmen will keep working on the ship in the water. Workers hope to christen it this spring, and send it along for some trial sea runs in the fall of 2014. It will then be delivered to the U.S. Navy in 2015.

The Zumwalt uses an ultra-modern “wave piercing” bow, a new design previously seen on the CSS Virginia and the USS Maine. Let’s hope she fairs better than either of those.

Unisex This: Duck and Cover

Obama Wants To FAG OUT United States Marine Corp Dress Uniform

Is there nothing this worthless commie n*****r agitator won’t fuck up?

A change to the Marine Corps’ uniform hats could take the hard-nosed Leathernecks from the Halls of Montezuma to the shops of Christopher Street.M

Thanks to a plan by President Obama to create a “unisex” look for the Corps, officials are on the verge of swapping out the Marines’ iconic caps – known as “covers” — with a new version that some have derided as so “girly” that they would make the French blush.

“We don’t even have enough funding to buy bullets, and the DoD is pushing to spend $8 million on covers that look like women’s hats!” one senior Marine source fumed to The Post. “The Marines deserve better. It makes them look ridiculous.”

The thin new covers have a feminine line that some officials think would make them look just as good on female marines as on males — in keeping with the Obama directive.

“The Marine Corps is being ‘encouraged’ by DoD to standardize on a unisex/universal dress and service cap,” Marine brass noted in an internal memo obtained by The Post.
Modal Trigger

Male and female Marines currently wear gender-specific caps.

The controversial covers have been dubbed the “Dan Daly” hat, after a World War I sergeant from Long Island who twice won the Medal of Honor.

But some Marines love the old hat, which has been in use since 1922 and think the new hat is a glorified “porter’s cap.” The new Daly model is based on a style the Marines used from 1904 to 1918 – and then jettisoned.

“The Dan Daly cap looks too French, and the last people we want to associate our Marines with would be the French military,” wrote one commenter on the Marine Times Web site.

I’m sure he wants the US Marines to now also ACT like the British Royal Marines. Remember them, those guys in the rubber boat who surrendered without a shot and let the Iranians arrest them in the Gulf?

Hey Marines, wouldn’t you all just look so fetching and swish in some nice soft coordinated pink berets? With feathers?

i’m gonna fucking puke.

‘allo ‘allo! Non! I am not zee inept Fwench poleezman, I am zee new Marines!

Go Navy

USS Zumwalt, Biggest Destroyer Ever, Nearly Ready To Launch

image

behold the mighty Budget Eater

So far, construction of the first-in-class Zumwalt, the largest U.S. Navy destroyer ever built, is on time and on budget, something that’s a rarity in new defense programs, officials said. And the Navy believes the ship’s big gun, stealthy silhouette and advance features will make it a formidable package.

The christening of the ship bearing the name of the late Adm. Elmo “Bud” Zumwalt was canceled a week ago because of the federal government shutdown. Without fanfare, the big ship will be moved to dry dock and floated in the coming days.

The ship is 100 feet longer than the existing class of destroyers.

It features an unusual wave-piercing hull, electric drive propulsion, advanced sonar and guided missiles, and a new gun that fires rocket-propelled warheads as far as 100 miles. Unlike warships with towering radar- and antenna-laden superstructures, the Zumwalt will ride low to the water to minimize its radar signature, making it stealthier than others.

...

The Navy once envisioned building more than 20 of the ships. But the ship has so many sophisticated features and its cost grew so high that senior Navy officials tried to kill the program. Instead, it was truncated to just three ships, the first being Zumwalt.

The Zumwalt will cost more than $3.5 billion — about three times that of current destroyers — but the program has not been beset by big cost overruns or delays, officials said.

Hard to swallow that one. $3.5 BILLION. But WTH, the Air Force has single airplanes that cost nearly as much. I guess money doesn’t go that far anymore, considering that a regular old ocean liner or cruise ship, twice as long, twice as wide, twice as tall, costs a mere billion. And goes 4mph slower. So the Navy gets 1/8 as much boat for 3.5 times the price, essentially paying out 25 times more than the rest of us. But hey, this thing has every last bell, whistle, and woo-woo bit of electronics the entire defense industry could dream up. And TWO cannons, so look out.

Two.

And while costs have soared on this tin can so much that top officials tried to kill the whole project, and what was going to be 20 ships is now just 3, now we’re told the boat is being built on time and on budget. Yeah right.

JJOAPS.

old and disillusioned , veteran gives away all his and family military medals

This caught my eye tonight. So sad it’s come to this for an old vet to feel this way.  But no surprise.  Is it.

I’ve heard similar from those much younger.  But when an old soldier who has served his country and lived into old age gets to feeling like this well, you just know things aren’t gonna get much better.  And anyway, I’m sure it didn’t just come on him overnight.

Take a look.

Stanley Fox, 91, joined up at the age of just 14 and says he was proud to fight for his country
He served in World War II where he won a variety of medals and spent two years in PoW camp in Africa
He has now given away more than a dozen medals earned by him, his father and his brother in protest at old people being treated like ‘rubbish’

By Francesca Infante

Stanley Gordon Fox earned an assortment of honours including the Military Cross for his heroics in World War II.

But now the disenchanted OAP says he no longer feels any affinity with the country he served with such distinction.

He has sent his collection of 23 medals to a children’s hospice along with medals earned by his brother and his father, who fought in Boer Wars and the First World War.

He said: ‘No one seems to care these days, older people are just treated like a bit of rubbish.

‘The country is not as we all hoped. It is not what we fought for. We were proud to fight for the country and I was proud to wear the medals.

Good. Now Chop His Head Off

Nidal Malik Hasan, Fort Hood Shooter GUILTY

FORT HOOD, Texas (AP)—Army Maj. Nidal Hasan was convicted Friday for the deadly 2009 shooting rampage at Fort Hood, a shocking assault against American troops at home by one of their own who said he opened fire on fellow soldiers to protect Muslim insurgents abroad.

A jury of 13 high-ranking military officers reached a unanimous guilty verdict on all 13 counts of premeditated murder and a guilty verdict on 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder. Hasan is now eligible for the death penalty.

Because Hasan never denied his actions, the court-martial was always less about a conviction than it was about ensuring he received the death penalty. From the beginning of the case, the federal government has sought to execute Hasan, believing that any sentence short of a lethal injection would deprive the military and the families of the dead of the justice they have sought for nearly four years.

Hasan, a Virginia-born Muslim, said the attack was a jihad against U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He bristled when the trial judge, Col. Tara Osborn, suggested the shooting rampage could have been avoided were it not for a spontaneous flash of anger.

“It wasn’t done under the heat of sudden passion,” Hasan said before jurors began deliberating. “There was adequate provocation — that these were deploying soldiers that were going to engage in an illegal war.”

All but one of the dead were soldiers, including a pregnant private who curled on the floor and pleaded for her baby’s life.

The attack came to an end when Hasan was shot in the back by one of the officers responding to the shooting. He is paralyzed from the waist down, confined to a wheelchair, uses a catheter and wears adult diapers.

Guess the Army won’t be Pampering him much longer.

See What Happens When I Take A Couple Days Off???

didn’t even look at the news or the internet until midnight ... looks like the camels finally saw the bricks in Egypt. Is this good or bad?

Military Junta In Egypt

Morsi Out, Muslim Brotherhood arrested

SoS John Effin’ Kerry Busy Luffing His Jib

image

J. Eff-face Kerry poorly sailing the RBS Tax Loophole while Egypt metaphorically burns

[July 3 just before midnight] CAIRO (AP) — Egypt’s first democratically elected president was overthrown by the military Wednesday, ousted after just one year in office by the same kind of Arab Spring uprising that brought the Islamist leader to power.

The armed forces announced they would install a temporary civilian government to replace Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, who denounced the action as a “full coup” by the generals. They also suspended the Islamist-drafted constitution and called for new elections.

Millions of anti-Morsi protesters around the country erupted in celebrations after the televised announcement by the army chief. Fireworks burst over crowds in Cairo’s Tahrir Square, where men and women danced, shouting, “God is great” and “Long live Egypt.”

Fearing a violent reaction by Morsi’s Islamist supporters, troops and armored vehicles deployed in the streets of Cairo and elsewhere, surrounding Islamist rallies. Clashes erupted in several provincial cities when Islamists opened fire on police, with at least nine people killed, security officials said.

Gehad el-Haddad, a spokesman for the Muslim Brotherhood party, said Morsi was under house arrest at a Presidential Guard facility where he had been residing, and 12 presidential aides also were under house arrest.

The army took control of state media and blacked out TV stations operated by the Muslim Brotherhood. The head of the Brotherhood’s political wing was arrested.

The ouster of Morsi throws Egypt on an uncertain course, with a danger of further confrontation. It came after four days of mass demonstrations even larger than those of the 2011 Arab Spring that toppled longtime autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

Egyptians were angered that Morsi was giving too much power to his Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamists and had failed to tackle the country’s mounting economic woes.

Egyptian military arrest top Muslim Brotherhood figures amid crackdown
An Islamist coalition led by the Muslim Brotherhood is calling on their supporters to peacefully protest the removal of former Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi in a “Friday of Rejection,” after the Egyptian military arrested top Brotherhood figures as part of a major crackdown against the group.

The National Coalition in Support of Legitimacy called on the Egyptian people to “take to the streets and mobilize peacefully” after Friday prayers “to say ‘No’ to military detentions, ‘No’ to the military coup,” according to Reuters.

“We are being headhunted all over the country,” Muslim Brotherhood Spokesman Gehad el-Haddad said Thursday, according to The Guardian. “We are holding a mass rally after Friday prayers to take all peaceful steps necessary to bring down this coup.”

Um, on general principal, I’d have to say “Gee, too darn bad” that the terrorists are being rounded up in Egypt. Cry me a river. And the top two MB guys are named Baddie and the Shitter fer crying out loud. Oh, oops, Badie and el Shater. Yeah, big diff there.

Badie and el-Shater were widely believed by the opposition to be the real power in Egypt during Morsi’s tenure. As of Wednesday night, Badie was last known to be holed up at a tourist resort on the Mediterranean coast near the Libyan border, with security forces surrounding the building.
...
In addition to the two high-ranking leaders, Al-Ahram reported that arrest warrants were issued for 300 other members of the Brotherhood, Reuters reported. Some of the Brotherhood members were reportedly placed in the same prison holding Hosni Mubarak, Egypt’s former president ousted in 2011.

Wow, that could add up to ... a LOT of rubber hoses and electrodes. Still, boo hoo. I think?

Authorities in Egypt reportedly rounded up or ordered the arrest of key leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood on Thursday as the new military-backed president was sworn in promising early, inclusive elections.

Adli Mansour, chief justice of Egypt’s constitutional court until he was promoted to the presidency by the military on Wednesday, defended the removal of Mohamed Morsi – the country’s first elected leader – as a step needed “to correct the path of the glorious revolution” that overthrew longtime strongman Hosni Mubarak in 2011.

“This is the only safe way to a better tomorrow, to more freedom and more justice,” he said in a short televised speech.

But his swearing in coincided with a crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood’s top leaders, including Mohamed Badie, the head of the once-banned group who was arrested in the northern town of Marsa Matruh according to news agency reports. However, the Brotherhood’s Twitter page – often a reliable source – claimed neither Mr Badie nor the group’s number two, Khairat al-Shater, were in detention.

Mr Morsi and at least a dozen aides were out of public view and reportedly detained on Wednesday night, shortly after the military ousted him following popular protests.

Egyptian state television said 56 people had been killed and 2,495 injured since the start of the protests on Sunday.

Mr Morsi’s supporters and their Islamist allies appeared not to know how to react to Wednesday’s overthrow of his government.

… Adli Mansour, was sworn in as interim president.  [Mansour, formerly] The chief justice of Egypt’s supreme constitutional court, took his oath of office under an army transition plan during a ceremony that was broadcast live on state television.

Shortly afterwards, officials announced they had arrested the supreme leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, the Islamist group of the deposed president.

Mohammed Badie was arrested on Wednesday night in a coastal city west of Cairo and flown to the capital on a military helicopter.

As the swearing-in ceremony got underway, military jets staged a series of fly-pasts across the capital.  A view shows a fly-past over protesters against ousted Egyptian President Mursi in Tahrir Square in Cairo Another night of celebrations in Tahrir Sqaure

Above Tahrir Square, for days the centre of anti-government protests, Air force planes painted the sky in the colours of the national flag.

“I swear to preserve the system of the republic, and respect the constitution and law, and guard the people’s interests,” Mr Mansour said.

He praised the mass protests, saying they united Egyptians, but also invited the deposed president’s Muslim Brotherhood “to take part in the political life”.

“The most glorious thing about June 30 is that it brought together everyone without discrimination or division,” he continued.  “I offer my greetings to the revolutionary people of Egypt. “I look forward to parliamentary and presidential elections held with the genuine and authentic will of the people.

“The youth had the initiative and the noblest thing about this glorious event is that it was an expression of the nation’s conscience and an embodiment of its hopes and ambitions. It was never a movement seeking to realise special demands or personal interests,” he added.

The ceremony followed the dramatic removal of Mr Morsi by the military, the suspension of the Islamist-drafted constitution and a declaration of fresh presidential and parliamentary elections.

So the military pulled a takeover on the guy who got elected to be Maximum Leader after the last Maximum Leader got tossed, because the new one was handing out way too much power and favoritism to a well known terrorist group, which would effectually minimize the military’s hold on power in the country? Or are the good people in the Eqyptian Army, Western trained, Western educated, Western funded, and perhaps utterly Western politically influenced by, wise enough to see that throwing their personal empty little sandbox to the rabid dogs of jizzlam might not be such a smart idea?

Which way will be better, the military backed “democracy” or the terrorists backed “democracy”? Best for the people of Egypt (some of the poorest, least educated, most gullible fellahs on the planet) and the people of America, who give them huge amounts of free money every year.

Only time will tell.

In the mean time, the other important question is ... what will Zahi Hawass do now? He just barely got his old job and full powers back a few short weeks ago, after slipping out from under the suspicion of the Egyptian “Committee of Public Safety” by showing himself not too attached to the old Mubarak regime and tight with the new Morsi regime. Now he’s going to have to squeeze his camel through the eye of that needle all over again. But let’s face it, he’s the only known face of Egypt right now anywhere in the world that doesn’t have a gun or a protest banner associated with it.

Up In The Air, Upside Down

image

france_flag_2  france_flag_2  france_flag_2

Ten years ago, Airbus Military began working on a new transport aircraft that would take Europe into the next century of aerial warfare.

Backed by seven European members of NATO: Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Spain, Turkey, and the United Kingdom, the aircraft program suffered years of delays and cost €20 billion ($26.1 billion).

Now, the A400M Atlas is almost here.

Scheduled for first delivery to the French army in time for July 14 Bastille Day celebrations, the turboprop plane is designed to be capable of everything its new owners need, from midair refueling to paratrooper drop-offs to landings on short and unpaved runways.

It can even carry more than 80,000 pounds of cargo, while remaining remarkably agile in the air.

Well, yay for Airbus. Seriously. This looks like a great airplane.

Except for the T shaped tail, the A400M looks quite a lot like the Lockheed C-130 Hercules turboprop aircraft that the US has been flying since the 1950s. But while the two aircraft have similar wingspans, the A400M’s fuselage is half again longer (cargo bay is 13x13x58 vs 12x9x40), and it has engines with nearly three times the power. So it can carry about 210% more cargo mass (80,000lb vs 37,216lb), and do it while flying a third faster (485mph vs 366mph), fly just as far (2000 miles), yet land on the same kind of rough short runways. The A400M fills the niche between the C-130J and the massive jet powered C-141 Starlifter (retired).

Word for the day: anhedral. Dihedral is the upwards “V” profile of the wings of an airplane when seen from the front. Anhedral is that same kind of “V”, except the wings tilt downwards, like “^”. The A400M has anhedral wings. Dihedral wings are most often used on low wing airplanes, and help the aircraft fly smoothly with minimal rolling. It’s a pendulum thing. Think water in the bottom of a cup. Anhedral wings are most often used on high wing airplanes, like the B-52 or this A400M. Works the same way, just backwards. The airplane hangs from the wing, like a pendulum weight on a Steadi-Cam. Either way, as the picture above shows, the new A400M is quite agile, considering it’s a turboprop cargo plane that flies nearly as fast as a jet airliner.

image

Not bad. And it only took them 60 years to build a possibly better plane than the C-130.

Stand Tall. Be Army Proud In The UK

Post Woolwich: UK Troops advised not to wear uniform outside bases

image

funny, I always thought this was a fwench army flag

Defence sources said the order had been given that uniform should not be worn by those travelling alone, or on public transport as a “common sense precaution” immediately after the killing.

A source stressed the order was temporary while investigations into the killing carried on and the decision would be reviewed in the next few days.

Col Richard Kemp, who commanded British forces in Afghanistan, said it would be a mistake to reinstate an earlier permanent bar on military personnel wearing uniforms in public. That ban was put in force because of an IRA campaign in the 1970s and 1980s to target personnel in Britain, Germany and Holland.

Oh I dunno ... you could try issuing them weapons and ammunition ... like real soldiers.

“Personally, I would argue against it,” he told the Today programme. “As we saw in this case you don’t need to have somebody in uniform, you just need to have someone who knows a bit about soldiers and does a bit of observation in the vicinity of a barracks and you can identify a soldier very quickly.

“I think we should be right to think about ways of protecting ourselves better but I think it would be wrong to suggest we live in a state of fear of this type of attack continuing.

“I think it is possible further attacks will be inspired by this type of attack… one of the biggest priorities for the services is to look at the role of the internet in motivating people and look very carefully at which radical sites should be suppressed on the internet, as well, of course, as more direct preaching in some of the mosques in this country which has caused people to turn to radicalism and terrorism before.

“That’s another area we need to put more resources into again.”

Funny how they can go to war in other countries, but it’s too dangerous to wear their uniforms in their own country. I find this rather sickening. My idea of a post-killing “common sense precaution” in Woolwich would involve bulldozers and bayonets. And uniforms.

Today’s Bit Of Rare History

I never knew they existed ...

image

You’re looking at the trunnion stamping of a Model 1861 3 inch rifle. A cannon. Cast from steel. From the Civil War. One like this

image

The trunnions are the round stubs that stick out the side of the middle of the barrel and are used as the hinge pins to attach the gun to it’s carriage. Up until the start of that conflict, cannons had been made from either cast bronze or cast iron. The rifled field piece in the lower picture was made by the Phoenix Iron Company (who later became famous bridge builders) and is made from roller forged laminated strips of helical wrapped wrought iron. Because wrought iron has much greater tensile (stretching) strength than cast iron, these cannons were much stronger than their cast iron brethren, and almost never blew up when you fired them. And that’s a very good thing!

Unfortunately, making cannons with Damascus style forged iron barrels was quite a bit more involved than filling a mold with molten metal and then letting it cool for a week or two. And while the Bessemer process for creating steel had been invented in England a few years before the War, it hadn’t really made it across the ocean much at that point. So only a very few foundries, such as Singer, Nimick & Company of Pittsburgh, were able to use crucible steel in the volume required to make artillery. But the steel guns they cast, all 6 of them, were just as strong, durable, and light as the wrought iron ones made by PIC. Except they cost twice as much.

6 were built. One, this one, hangs on the wall at the theater in Gettysburg. (It weighs a bit over 860 pounds. Strong wall!) Two others are in McDonald Field in the battlefield park at Chickamauga; these are the two captured by Beford Forrest’s troops near Lexington Tennessee 12/18/1862. The other three have been lost to time, either melted down for scrap, buried to avoid capture and then forgotten, or in some town park somewhere covered over with a coat of paint whereupon they look just like ever other Model 1861 gun out there, and there were lots.

Understanding America’s Violent Far-Right

Seriously. That’s the title of a study published by West Point! An excerpt from the web page:

In the last few years, and especially since 2007, there has been a dramatic rise in the number of attacks and violent plots originating from individuals and groups who self-identify with the far-right of American politics.

Really? I never read about these in the news. You’d think the left-wing media would be all over such stories. I have read about a huge increase in left-wing violence since 9/11. But I’ve yet to read the study, which is available at the above link as a pdf download. OK BMEWSers and BMEWSettes, go get the study and let’s start ripping it to shreds! Hurry! Get it before they take it down. Oh, never mind. If they do take it down, I’ll just post my copy at my blog.

The Left Just Doesn’t Learn

Gadsden flag, called Tea Party symbol, removed from New York military armory

image

The city of New Rochelle, N.Y., has removed the historic Gadsden “Don’t Tread On Me” flag from a military armory, deeming the flag “too partisan” because it often is used by the tea party movement.

And in response, veterans groups have tapped the Thomas More Law Center to take up the fight.

It was after an official ceremony on March 21 at the New Rochelle Armory that a new American flag was unfurled to replace the previous weathered flag that flew at the location. Beneath the new American flag, the yellow Gadsden Flag was flown, as is common tradition on many military sites.

However, within a week of the ceremony, City Manager Chuck Strome ordered the Gadsden flag be taken down because of “unidentified complaints” that the flag was a symbol of the tea party movement.

Peter Parente, president of the United Veterans Memorial and Patriotic Association of New Rochelle, sent Strome links to the history of the flag so he decided to allow it to remain.

Visit the “Don’t Tread on Me’ section of the WND Superstore, where you can find caps, flags, blankets and shirts – all with the famous slogan.

But the city council then stepped in, voting 5-2 to order the flag to be removed.

The five members who voted to uphold its removal were Democrats, while the two voting to reinstate the flag were Republicans.

That same day, the public works department removed the flag.

Now the flag fight is headed to court.

“Their outrageous decision to confiscate a cherished symbol of our War for Independence smacks of pure partisan politics,” Richard Thompson, chief counsel of the Thomas More Law Center, stated.

“Many Americans fought and died for our independence under that flag, and the law center will take available means to return the Gadsden flag back on the veterans’ flag pole. As one Revolutionary War hero said, we ‘have just begun to fight,’” he added.

That would be John Paul Jones, for all you who slept through history class. Or went to government schools, where military heroes are ignored so that history lesson time can better focus on how the blood thirsty barbaric Native Americans were abused by Evil White People.

According to the U.S. Navy website, beginning Sept. 11, 2002, all U.S. Navy ships have flown the First Navy Jack flag. The flag, first used by the Continental Navy in 1775, consists of a rattlesnake superimposed across 13 alternating red and white stripes with the motto, “Don’t Tread On Me.”

According to the site, Commodore Esek Hopkins used the First Navy Jack as a signal to engage the British in the American Revolution. The Jack in today’s fleet represents a historic reminder of the nation’s origin.

Over a half a century ago, New Rochelle chartered the veterans society, known as the UVMPA, to formally conduct veterans services, which include caring for memorials and monuments and upkeep and maintenance of armory flags throughout the city.

In the past, the city council has never sought to intervene in any aspect of the how the UVMPA fulfills its responsibilities. The Thomas More Law Center is confident it will be victorious in representing the interests of the veterans group.

The yellow Gadsden flag featuring a coiled snake and the phrase, “Don’t Tread On Me” is steeped in U.S. history dating back to its founding. It has been used by Marines and the Navy since 1775 and is often flown at Marine Corp bases and on Navy warships.

The New Rochelle armory was at one time a New York State Naval Militia Armory and training facility for both Navy and Marines.

“Those who don’t study history are condemned to be Democrats?” Did these total idiots think the Tea Party people just invented that flag ... (ahem) out of whole cloth??  rolleyes  rolleyes

image

An illustration missing from today’s schoolbooks on American History (link)

The Gadsden Flag uses the same rattlesnake metaphor as the “Snake On Stripes” flag; the two designs are essentially interchangeable. The US Navy has been flying the “Fake Snake” (there are historical doubts about it’s use during the Revolution) since 1975. The coiled rattler on a yellow background has been a symbol used by the US Marines since the very beginning.

A rebel military commander in Syria is reported to have been wounded by a bomb blast in Deir al-Zour province.

Activists said a device exploded next to a car in which Col Riad al-Asaad, long head of the Free Syrian Army (FSA), was travelling in Mayadeen.

There were conflicting reports about his fate, but an FSA spokesman told BBC Arabic that he had lost a leg.

Col Asaad once led the armed rebellion against President Bashar al-Assad, but his position was gradually superseded.

In December, more than 260 leaders of the main FSA units from across Syria agreed at a meeting in Antalya to a unified command structure.

They elected a 30-member Supreme Military Council (SMC), which then chose Gen Salim Idriss as the new chief of staff.

Col Asaad said he had not been invited to the meeting by the foreign powers which organised it, adding: “They want people who obey orders.”

The former Syrian Air Force commander, who defected in July 2011, nevertheless remained a prominent figure in the armed uprising, regularly appearing with rebel fighters on the ground in Syria.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based activist group, reported that Col Asaad had been conducting a tour of the eastern town of Mayadeen on Sunday night when a bomb exploded near his car, wounding him in the leg.

An FSA spokesman confirmed to BBC Arabic that Col Asaad had lost the leg.

Gee .... what a shame that whole group couldn’t have been standing right on top of that bomb.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
