Nobody Listens To Poor Joe B

image

The Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, was set to withdraw from all peace talks with Israel last night after the announcement this week that 1600 apartments would be added to Jewish settlements in occupied East Jerusalem.

The announcement enraged the visiting US Vice-President, Joe Biden, who has told the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, that it was liable to ‘’set the Middle East on fire’’.

Mr Biden blames Mr Netanyahu for the decision, telling officials on Wednesday that the United States’ close relationship with Israel was jeopardising its other bilateral relationships across the region.

How much would it cost to ship Israel about 200 million cinder blocks and 50,000 cubic yards of concrete? 1600 homes? Build 160,000!

Oh, and “occupied East Jerusalem”??? Like Gaza, and the Golan Heights? Bite me: it’s Israel. All of it.

cloak and dagger stuff

SECURITY STING

Found in the letters page today of the Daily Mail.
Sorry, no link to letters to editor or anything close. If you can find it, PLEASE let me know what ya did.

The writer is identified as Carl Clark, of Norfolk, UK

HAVING had dealings in the past with both British and Israeili Intelligence, I know the one thing that never happens is for Mossad to warn other agencies of what they’re up to.  They don’t trust anyone apart from themselves.  I worked alongside them for three years.

This Dubai affair is a ‘false flag’ operation and the main agency in the frame is MI6 alonside mercenary ‘deniable assets’ living in Israel and elsewhere,

Some are trying to pin the blame on Mossad, but I can promise you that the guys and gals who took part in this botched operation were expendable sources who have been compromised and have been set up in a brilliant sting by MI6 and the CIA to discredit Mossad.  Hats off to the think tank behind this operation.

When I was operating several years back, we certainlt didn’t get our faces on CCTV cameras.  Mabhouh could have been taken out without all this publicity.  Mossad doesn’t advertise.

There’s a lot of competition between the Israelis and the UK and US intellengence agencies and this won’t be the first time they’ve hijacked each others methods.

I hope but don’t know if the writer of this letter was able to prove to the MAIL he was who he said and actually did work in intel with the ppl he says he did.
If he’s telling the truth, it seems odd does it not that he’d use a word like “source” where surely “assets” is the proper description. I’m not expert so it’s only a guess.  I have to wonder as well that with the threat of terrorism we have, that the agencies would pull off stunts to discredit another agency thought to be a friendly ally. Ok, friendly may be pushing it a bit sometimes but you get the picture.  Don’t these folks need each other?
The world of spooks and cloak and dagger stuff is always fascinating.  The way the mind works. And in many cases doesn’t.
Be great to be the invisible man and hang around the conf. room to listen to what the intel agencies are saying at this moment.  I bet it would be very interesting.

Another one of those blogs I ran across a while back, made a note and never returned. Yeah I know. Stupid cos it’s well worth a peek especially as it come from Israel and apparently the guy knows something about weapons.

Now then. Here’s the embarrassing part.  I REDISCOVERED this site thanks to .... yeah. Him again.

THEO SPARKS .....  with thanks.

Also, there’s a short story to go with this photo .... which could not be copied and pasted.  Sneaky.  The young ladies are triplets.

image

The site is dedicated to guns and self defense. I tried posting the link here but had lots of trouble with loading.  So, go to Theo’s, find the girls shown and try to access the site to Israel blogger from there.  For some reason it worked better. I’ve no idea why.

http://www.theospark.net/

OKAY ... Thanks to our BMEWS TIGER, and I don’t know how ... here’s the text I wasn’t able to copy/paste earlier.  ???
Thanks Tiger.

DOUBLETAPPER: ("Blogging from Israel on Guns, Self Defense, and whatever else I feel like blogging about"):
IDF Women

“The concept of ‘one for all and all for one’ can get pretty absurd,” wrote the late columnist Sam Orbaum about his identical triplet daughters 14 years ago.

Orbaum, who passed away in 2002 at the age of 46, wrote about life as a father of identical triplets.

Not only did he sometimes mix them up, Orbaum wrote in his well-known wry, comic style, but he was also constantly impressed by their tight bond - when for example they stood up for one another in fights in the school sandbox.
The three blond 19-year-old sisters are still sticking up for one another, although this time not on the playground but in the IDF Air Corps, in which they all enlisted a few months ago, making history.

Odelia, the oldest (born a minute before her two sisters), serves as a control officer ; Nomi is an air traffic controller; and Donna is currently in training for a different position. All three plan on attending the IDF’s pestigious Office Candidate Course and extending their service for at least an additional year.

Nomi Orbaum says, “[Serving In the IDF ] is what characterizes the state.”

“He supported us in everything we did until he passed away when we were 12,” Donna said on how their father would feel about their serving in the IDF . “This is the seventh year since he passed away and I think about him all the time and see his smile and know that he would have been proud of us.”

All of Israel is proud of the Orbaum Triplets!

Smoke and Mirrors and Bombs

The pointy end of the stick, where diplomacy fails and government statements try to hide the truth.

Israel Seizes Ship Full of Weapons

Was Too!!

Israel’s navy has seized a container ship originating in Iran and loaded with arms, including rockets, destined for Syria and Lebanon’s Shia group Hizbollah, the Israeli military said on Wednesday.

The pre-dawn interception was used by Israeli government officials to underscore their argument that their arch-foe was supplying weapons to militant groups targeting the Jewish state. Israel has warned that Hizbollah has been rearming since the group launched more than 4,000 rockets into its territory during a 34-day war in mid-2006.

Israel’s military said a navy force boarded the ship, which was flying the flag of Antigua, about 100 miles west of Israel’s coast. Following an inspection that showed the ship carried a variety of weapons hidden behind what appeared to be civilian cargo, it was towed to an Israeli port.

Shimon Peres, Israel’s president, said during a visit to a military base: “The army successfully captured a ship that seems to have come from Iran and was heading to Syria and to Hizbollah. . .  Iran and Syria are arming terror organisations, especially Hizbollah and Hamas, and are clearly acting to undermine peace in the Middle East.”

image image

JERUSALEM – Israeli commandos seized a ship Wednesday that defense officials said was carrying hundreds of tons of weapons from Iran bound for Lebanon’s Hezbollah guerrillas – the largest arms shipment Israel has ever commandeered.

The Israeli military said an Iranian document was found on board, showing that the arms shipment originated from Iran, although the paper was not shown to reporters.

“We found dozens of containers, with hundreds of tonnes of arms bound for Hezbollah from Iran,” deputy naval commander Rani Ben Yehuda told reporters.

At Ashdod port, soldiers pulled hundreds of olive-green ammunition crates from the shipping containers, many of them surrounded by sacks of cement meant to disguise the contents. They were then divided into huge stacks of rockets of various sizes, mortar shells, hand grenades and ammunition for AK-47 rifles. Many of the weapons crates had inscriptions in Spanish, Chinese and English.
No anti-aircraft or anti-tank missiles have been found on the ship, Ben-Yehuda said, but he added that soldiers were still unpacking containers.

Israel’s Haaretz newspaper reported that the ship set out from Iran and later docked in Yemen and Sudan before passing through the Suez Canal en route to either Syria or Lebanon.

Stopped in Sudan and Yemen first? Supplying the rebels in both places? Sounds like a floating arms bazaar! Oh, if only International Law could close that bothersome Arms Ship Loophole!

Was Not!!

In Tehran, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem dismissed the Israeli allegations that the ship carried arms. His remarks were carried by Hezbollah’s Al-Manar TV station and other Lebanese local stations.

“Unfortunately, some official pirates in the seas, sometimes in the name of the navy, sometimes in the name of inspection, obstruct trade movement between Syria and Iran,” al-Moallem said at a joint news conference with his Iranian counterpart.

Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said Wednesday that the cargo ship seized by Israel was not carrying weapons, the official IRNA news agency reported. Mottaki made the remarks in a joint press conference with his visiting Syrian counterpart Walid Muallem on Wednesday.

Asked about the reports over the seizure of an Iranian cargo ship on the coasts of Israel, Muallem said, “Such a thing is not correct and the ship was moving from Syria to Iran and was not carrying any weapons nor the equipment to construct weapons.”

“Since the Israeli leadership and society are not ready for peace, they are using any pretext to shun peace obligations, and one is the issue of the Iranian shipment,” said Ghassan Khatib, a spokesman for the West Bank-based Palestinian government.

Hezbollah on Thursday denied the weapons were for them. There was no comment from Lebanese officials.

“Hezbollah categorically denies it has any connection with the weapons which the Zionist enemy claims it seized aboard the Francop ship,” Hezbollah said in a statement faxed to The Associated Press in Beirut.

The Bigger Picture

The arms shipment underscored the dangerous tensions between Israel and the Islamic Republic. Israel considers Iran a strategic threat because of its nuclear program and long-range missile development, and says Tehran is lying when it denies it is building atomic arms.

Iran has never acknowledged giving weapons to Hezbollah, which fought a monthlong war with Israel in 2006. Proof of large-scale Iranian weapons shipments to its proxy forces on Israel’s borders could reinforce Israeli demands for tough action — possibly even a pre-emptive strike — against Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Israeli defense officials said the weapons haul consisted of arms already in Hezbollah’s possession [ huh? WTF? translation error? ], and would have given the Lebanese guerrilla group the ability to fight a full month longer in the event of a clash with Israel on the scale of the 2006 war.

The defense officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the military has yet to formally comment on the potential value of the shipment’s contents to militants.

The presence of Iranian proxies in the Mideast, combined with worries over Tehran’s nuclear program and arsenal of long-range missiles, have made Iran the Jewish state’s most formidable foe.

Neutralizing Iran’s bomb-making ability remains Netanyahu’s top priority — and Israel has not ruled out a military strike against Tehran’s nuclear facilities.

They Are Not Feeling The Love

Dry Bones Blog

The Zionist Organization of America writes about Obama’s June speech in Cairo.

“President Obama made some positive comments about Israel, stating that the U.S.-Israel bond is ‘unbreakable’ and criticized those who threaten Israel’s destruction and repeat vile stereotypes about Jews – without, however, naming those who do so like Iran, Syria, and Abbas’ Fatah-controlled Palestinian Authority (PA) (through the Fatah Constitution, PA-controlled publications, curricula, media, mosques, schools and youth camps).

“Overall, however, this was primarily a strongly biased speech, inimical to Israel, supportive of false Palestinian and Arab claims against Israel, blatantly factually inaccurate – inaccuracies that always benefited the anti-Israel Palestinian, Arab and Muslim cause.

“For example, Obama falsely claimed the Palestinian Arabs were ‘displaced’ by Israel in 1948; falsely claimed the Palestinian Arabs have been suffering trying to establish their state for 60 years (they could have had a state in 1937, 1948 or in 2000, but turned down each opportunity). Obama also bizarrely claimed that he longs for the day Jerusalem is secure for Jews, Muslims and Christians even though this has been precisely the case since Israel reunited the city under its control in 1967.

...

“Despite the fact that President Obama declared that he would be totally ‘honest’ in discussing Mideast issues, he said nothing about Palestinian Arab and Saudi Arabian persecution of Christians. (Even the Pope recently expressed dismay by the huge numbers of Christians who have left the Muslim countries.) And while speaking of the slaughter in Darfur, he didn’t even hint that Egypt and other Arab states have for years been blocking international action to end it. President Obama used the Palestinian apologetic term of ‘resistance’ to discuss Palestinian terrorism, implying a legitimate basis for violence. He also never asked the Arab countries or the PA to put Israel on their maps – something which none of them do.”

No, I don’t think Israel is altogether thrilled with our new President. Hey Israel, welcome to our club! Most of us aren’t exactly fainting with joy either. Maybe things would be better if he gave PM Netanyahu one of those iPods filled with rap tunes and all his campaign speeches. And a few DVDs from the WalMart bargain bin. That really impresses those foreign heads of state you know!

YOU CAN FIND THE WEIRDEST STUFF ON THE NET. DID YOU KNOW THAT PEPSI IS A ZIONIST PLOT?

Yeah well, neither did I.  I can’t believe anyone can possibly really, really believe this stuff. But then why not?  There are so many really, really stupid ppl about, the mind boggles.

Perhaps some of you already knew about this. ?  I just caught the link to this Israeli news site almost by accident.
It’s either good for a laff or two, or tears.  A good head shake anyway.

Muslim Cleric: Pepsi is “Zionist Plot”

by Hillel Fendel

(IsraelNN.com) Extremist Moslems have not dropped their allegations that Pepsi Cola is essentially the code name for a Zionist plot.

MEMRI has released an English transcript of an address given by a Muslim religious leader in Egypt this past February, in which he explains that PEPSI is actually an acronym for “Pay Every Penny to Save Israel.”

In addition, a member of the Hamas terrorist organization’s parliament in Gaza made similar accusations against Pepsi last year. Speaking with official Hamas TV station Al-Aqsa TV on April 23, 2008, Hamas MP Salem Salamah said, “There are companies established by the colonialists and occupiers - large companies with branches all over the world, like Pepsi, Pepsi Cola. This is a well-known company. Pepsi is an acronym. P-E-P-S-I - Pay Every Pence to Save Israel. Pay every pence - pence is one-hundredth of a dollar – to save Israel. Pay every pence to save Israel…”

Al-Aqsa TV promotes terrorist activity and incites hatred of Jews and Israelis, according to the Anti-Defamation League.

More recently, this past February, Egyptian cleric Hazem Abu Ismail made a similar accusation. Speaking on Al Nas TV – a Muslim religious channel in Egypt that provides Islamic programming for Muslim Muftis – Abu Ismail all but called for a Muslim boycott of Pepsi because it stands for ‘Pay Every Penny Saving Israel.’ Abu Ismail said a penny is “one-thousandth of a dollar.”

Specifically, Hazem Abu Ismail said as follows (transcript provided by MEMRI, the Washington-based Middle East Media Research Institute, at http://www.memri.org):

Do you know what the word “Pepsi” means? Pepsi as in P-E-P-S-I. The first P stands for “Pay.” E stands for “Every.” The third letter stands for “Penny.” A penny means any small coin you receive and don’t know what to do with. Pay it to “Saving” I - “Israel.” In other words, pay every small coin you receive in order to save Israel. They don’t want money from you - they want your small change, your pennies. If I’m not mistaken, in American economics, a penny is one-thousandth of the dollar. It’s not even worth a piaster. It’s only a millime. At least I think it’s worth a millime, not even a piaster.

They say: “Donate the small change you don’t need, but give it to the right cause. If you collect small change, you can buy this drink.” They took the first letter of each word - “Pay Every Penny Saving Israel” - and they formed the word “Pepsi.” When you pay [to buy Pepsi], you are saving Israel. I am not talking about Pepsi, but about Coca Cola and all of them. I don’t want to specify the products. See for yourselves. You are Muslims. You can tell me. I don’t know. My little son knows more about the boycott than me. When we go shopping, he says to me: “Buy this, don’t buy that.” He knows them by heart. He has become an expert in this.

Carter to Obama: Remove Hamas From Terror List

Former President Jimmy Carter will urge the Obama administration to remove Hamas from the terrorist list, FOX News has learned.

Carter, a chief defender of the U.S.-designated terror group, said Tuesday he will meet with officials in the Obama administration in two days to discuss his latest trip to the Middle East.

Meanwhile, two Palestinian sources told FOX News that the group had discovered two roadside bombs planted near a crossing between Israel and Gaza on a path Carter’s convoy took to meet with the group’s leaders—Hamas advisers, though, reportedly cast doubt on claims that extremists were trying to kill Carter.

Carter was granted special waivers by the U.S. Secret Service allowing him to enter Gaza. Employees of the U.S. executive branch are not allowed into the strip since a roadside bomb killed three U.S. security personnel in 2003.

Carter was visiting with Hamas leaders to try to persuade them to accept the international community’s conditions for ending its boycott of the Islamic militant group.

The international community has asked Hamas to recognize Israel, renounce violence and accept previous peace deals as part of ongoing efforts for Palestinians overall to acquire their own country. Hamas has refused.

Jimma must have forgotten why Hamas is on that list in the first place: because they are a bunch of evil, murdering scum. Thankfully, Dhimmi Watch has not forgotten.

Jimmy Carter merits the contempt of all free people.

PS - I don’t buy the “Hamas foiled assassination attempt aimed at Carter” story for a heartbeat. They planted the bomb, then they came by later and blew it up. It’s a con, totally.

An Israeli woman’s attempt to commit suicide by lying on railway tracks has been caught on video.

Is it April first in Israel?

I watched this but I can’t believe it. Can you?
Even laying between and not on the track, is it possible no to be caught by the smallest thing under a train?
See what you think.  Hard to believe.

The amazing CCTV footage comes from the Israeli Railroad Company and shows crossing in northern Israel.
On Sunday the woman, circled in red, approached the tracks and a railway guard to the right of the screen tried to signal to her. She then appeared to lie down on the tracks as a high-speed train hurtles over her for several seconds.
Incredibly after the train passed, she appeared to get up and walk away.
The footage was broadcast on the Israeli TV network Channel 2. According to the station, police later caught up with the woman and escorted her to a local hospital were she received minor medical treatment for bruising to the head, and then was moved to psychiatric hospital in Northern Israel for further evaluation.

A VERY DIFFERENT KIND OF OBITUARY FROM ISRAEL.  BOOTED JUST TO POST THIS STORY.

Salamo Arouch, who died on April 26 aged 86, survived the Auschwitz concentration camp by fighting exhibition boxing matches for Nazi officers; his harrowing story later inspired a Hollywood film.

FROM THE TELEGRAPH SATURDAY OBITS

Born in Greece of Jewish descent, Arouch became middleweight champion of the Balkans, but his professional career was cut short by the Second World War and the German invasion of his homeland. Like thousands of other Greek Jews, he and his family and friends were deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Ordered to fight other prisoners for the entertainment of the Nazi guards, Arouch escaped the gas chambers. At the end of the war he emigrated to Palestine and witnessed the foundation of the state of Israel in 1948. His story was the basis for Triumph of the Spirit (1989) starring Willem Dafoe, much of which was shot on location at Auschwitz, with Arouch making an emotional return to the site as an adviser.

Salamon Arouch – he dropped the final “n” and was always known as Shlomo – was born in Salonika in 1923 into a family of Sephardic Jews. His father taught him to box, and in 1937, when he was 14, he made his debut in his home town, knocking down his opponent twice to win by a technical knockout.

Adopting a traditional style of jabbing and crossing, by 1939 he had an unbeaten record with 24 knockouts. His fancy footwork earned him the nickname “The Ballet Dancer”, and before the outbreak of war he was reportedly a member of the Greek Olympic boxing team.

Drafted into the Greek military, Arouch became a member of the army boxing squad. But when the Germans overran Greece, he was arrested and, because he was Jewish, deported with his family to Auschwitz on March 15 1943.

All the female members of his family were gassed on the first day, as were all the children and infants. With his father and younger brother, Arouch was forced into slave labour. When a Nazi officer found out that inmate 136954 had been a boxer, Arouch was forced to fight in matches held at the camp on Wednesday and Sunday evenings.

These bloody encounters – often preceded by juggling gipsies and dancing dogs – involved Jewish and gipsy boxers at Auschwitz; they were forced to fight each other, with Nazi officers placing heavy bets on the outcome.

The bouts ended only when one fighter was unable to continue. For the winner there would be bread and soup; the loser would be executed and incinerated.

On his second day at Auschwitz Arouch’s first fight was against a Polish Jew, with a senior officer at the camp, one “Hans”, acting as “referee”. Arouch knocked the Pole out. Twenty minutes later, he knocked out a six-foot Czech with a single punch to the stomach. “He fold like a camel,’’ Arouch remembered. “Hans says: ‘You good, you good.’”

For the next two years, Arouch would fight two or three times a week in a smoke-filled warehouse for the amusement of his Nazi captors, knowing that a single defeat would almost certainly result in death. Thanks to his speed and nimble footwork, he could beat opponents who outweighed him by more than 100 pounds. On one occasion Arouch (135lbs) claimed to have knocked out a 6ft 6in, 250lb gipsy fighter in 18 seconds.

His toughest opponent was a German-Jewish boxer called Klaus Silber, who had an undefeated pre-war amateur boxing record (44-0) and who had never lost any of his 100-plus fights at the camp. His fight with Arouch was so fierce that at one point, both men fell out of the ring. Silber went on to stun Arouch and then to knock him down. But Arouch recovered to knock Silber out. After the fight, Silber was never seen alive again.

By the time Arouch was removed from the slave labour force and put to work in an office, his entire family had been murdered. His father was executed after becoming too ill to work; when his brother, Avram, refused to pull gold teeth from those gassed in the ovens, he was shot dead on the spot.

Arouch managed to survive at Auschwitz for nearly two years, racking up a record of 208 knockouts. When the camp was finally liberated, he asked the British forces if they had any boxers who would fight him in an exhibition. When two were found, Arouch knocked them both out.

Asked how he approached his life-or-death battles at Auschwitz, Arouch admitted he felt terrible. “I trembled,” he said. “But a boxer had to be without compassion. If I didn’t win, I didn’t survive.”

While searching for members of his family at Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in April 1945, Arouch met 17-year-old Marta Yechiel, from his own home town. After their marriage later that year, in 1948 he emigrated to the fledgling state of Israel and served in the Israeli Army, where he continued to box. In civilian life he ran a successful shipping and moving business in Tel Aviv.

Salamo Arouch’s wife and four children survive him.

“Peace” Imam Calls for Extermination of Jews.  Right, a moderate muslim of peace.

Sorry Charlie but I find I do NOT even trust the ones called moderate.
I can see past their oh so insincere smiles as they talk about peace.

I find it impossible to add anything here. I can’t find words and so will leave it up to anyone who wants to comment.

“Peace” Imam Calls for Extermination of Jews

FrontPage magazine.com 20 April 2009
By Itamar Marcus and Barbara Crook

A Hamas cleric who once participated in an international conference of “Imams and Rabbis for Peace”—whose delegates vowed to “condemn any negative representation” of each other’s religions—has wholeheartedly espoused Hamas’s racist ideology in a recent Friday sermon on Hamas TV.

Ironically, this latest profession of Hamas’s genocidal racism was preached and broadcast at the start of the month in which the UN is meeting in the “Durban II” conference in Geneva to condemn Israel as being “racist.”

According to the Hamas interpretation of Islam, the Jews are inherently evil, seek to rule the (...)

A New Twist To The Game

Israel Finds Giant Natural Gas Field Off Of Coast

NEW YORK – A huge deep-water natural gas find off the coast of Israel promises to be a boon to the Jewish state’s economy as well as a stimulus to other developers searching for offshore oil and natural gas in the Mediterranean.

Noble Energy, a New York Stock Exchange-listed company, has discovered an estimated more than 3 trillion cubic feet of natural gas in three high-quality reservoirs drilled in the company’s Tamar No. 1 well in the Mediterranean Sea, about 56 miles off the Israeli northern port of Haifa.

Noble Energy drilled the Tamar No. 1 well to a depth of about three miles, beneath 5,500 feet of water.

The find is significant for those who believe the Bible indicates Israel is sitting on a massive oil reserve that would reshape the geopolitical structure of the Middle East.

The Tomar site is estimated to be three times as large as the Mari-B natural gas field off Israel’s southern shore that analysts estimate may reach depletion within five years, according to a report published by Israel12c.org.

“We are witnessing an historic moment in Israel’s energy market,” Israel’s National Infrastructure Minister Binyamin Ben Eliezer told Reuters. “If it turns out in a few weeks that the indicators received in recent days are true, then we are talking about the biggest find in Israel’s history.”

The only way they found this field was by going out and looking for it, and by drilling. I’m sure they drilled nice clean holes, but they didn’t let any possible environmental impacts to the Eastern Mediterranean Flip-Flopper fish (aka the towel headed sand shark) slow them down one iota.

Hamas declares victory in Gaza.  Some vow to continue the fight.

Hamas declares victory in Gaza claiming it lost only 48 fighters
Hamas has declared victory over Israel claiming it lost just 48 fighters during the 22-day onslaught in Gaza.

A masked gunman from the Islamic group’s armed wing vowed the groups would rearm as its leaders proclaimed it had achieved a holy victory in the confrontation.

“We announce to our people the martyrdom of 48 Qassam fighters,” Abu Obeida, spokesman for the Izzadin al-Qassam Brigades said.

The frontman, whose face was wrapped in an Arab Keffiyah scarf, dismissed Israeli attempts to stop weapons smuggling into Gaza, a declared aim of the war.

“Do whatever you want. Manufacturing the holy weapons is our mission and we know how to acquire weapons,” he said.

Israeli officials have estimated that up to 500 Hamas members were killed during Operation Cast Lead.

A tenuous ceasefire has held since Israeli troops withdrew from key areas of the densely populated strip. A total of 40,000 tonnes of food and medicines had been transported into Gaza since the offensive began, a spokesman for the Israeli humanitarian effort said.

Palestinians used the calm to dig bodies and possessions from the rubble of the deadliest assault the Hamas stronghold has ever seen.

No air strikes, rockets or major clashes were reported in the coastal enclave.

With the halt to fighting, Palestinian ambulance workers were able to work in areas which had been unsafe to enter.

“We have pulled out the bodies of 15 children and women from under their house,” said Abed Sharafi, 40.

“They were so badly decomposed that we couldn’t distinguish boys from girls. Some had been there for 15 days,” along the road north from Gaza City to Beit Lahiya. “There are so many.”

Nearly 100 bodies were recovered on Sunday as the truce came into effect.

The discoveries brought the overall death toll of Operation Cast Lead to more than 1,300, including more than 400 children, medics said. Another 5,300 were wounded. Israel reported a death toll of 13.

Arab leaders met in Kuwait today after weeks of squabbling over Israel’s offensive. Seventeen Arab heads of state are attending the two-day summit while another five countries are represented at senior official level.

The summit is set to approve a two-billion-dollar fund for the rebuilding of Gaza which was badly battered by the Israeli offensive.

Britain to send warships to Gaza as Israel prepares for ceasefire.(oh damn. and leave hamas alive?)

OK, if there’s a ceasefire and things are quiet for a short time, and then terrorists from Gaza (Hamas) either carry out suicide attacks or else fire rockets into Israel, then maybe just maybe Israel will finally and at long last be able to go in and clean out that rats nest without the rest of the hand wringing world getting in their way.
Stay Tuned on this one.

Britain will send warships to the eastern Mediterranean to prevent arms being smuggled into the Gaza Strip after an Israeli ceasefire.

The Prime Minister, Gordon Brown also appeared to suggest that Britain might put people on the ground to help secure the crossings into Gaza.

“Germany, France and Great Britain have just sent a letter to Israel and Egypt to say they will do everything we can to prevent arms trafficking which is at the root of some of the problems,” Mr Brown said. “I believe that will help get a solution to this crisis.”

His declaration came as the Israeli government appeared poised to end its three-week assault on the Palestinian territory by adopting a unilateral ceasefire plan.

Intense fighting marked the closing hours of Operation Cast Lead as Israel sought to entrench its military superiority over the radical Islamic movement Hamas.

The Prime Minister said that he had been in talks with Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas and with European leaders over the last few days.

“I believe there is general understanding that the appalling violence and the tragedies that have happened should come to an end as quickly as possible,” he said.

Israel’s defence minister, Ehud Barak, declared the country had achieved its goals for the 22-day conflict as he toured military units involved in the offensive.

“After three weeks of Operation Cast Lead, we are very close to reaching the goals and securing them through diplomatic agreements,” he said. “The defence forces must continue their operation and be ready for any development.”

Israel appeared to have come to its decision after reaching a bilateral agreement with America to establish a tough monitoring regime to stop weapons being smuggled to Hamas through tunnels under Gaza’s border with Egypt.

The Egyptian government has said the tunnels are mainly used for food while most arms are being smuggled into Gaza by sea.

Mr Brown said that if the ceasefire held, Britain would send in extra humanitarian aid. “We’re prepared to help move children, to take them out of the area so they can be treated elsewhere.”

Thousands of people gathered in Britain yesterday to demonstrate against the continuing Israeli attacks on Gaza.

While Israel has conceded that Hamas has not been wiped out by Operation Cast Lead, it is determined to deprive the Islamic group of any attempt to claim a victory.

Israeli officials said their decision to declare a ceasefire unilaterally would make Hamas responsible for any fresh clashes.

“It doesn’t matter what Hamas says now, its what they do,” said Mark Regev, an Israel government spokesman. “The world will see that after this Hamas will be responsible for what happens.”

The ceasefire announcement was expected to be made after a meeting of the security cabinet at the end of the Jewish Sabbath holiday.

The government’s key figures - Mr Barak, the prime minister Mr Olmert and foreign minister Tzipi Lipni - presented a united front to push for a cessation of the campaign.

However a top Hamas official vowed the group would continue its attacks on Israeli forces. Osama Hamdan, who is based in Lebanon, said: “If any vision does not achieve these things, then we will continue in the battle on the ground.”

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
